Chapter 1340: Chapter 1341: Advanced Player Intervention

"Who are you really?" In an instant, the tension and gravity on Dai Song’s face turned into murderous intent. Though they were close, he resisted the urge to strike, because Xu Huo’s hand was already on Dr. Duor’s shoulder.

Although Dr. Duor was engrossed in his research, he wasn’t completely oblivious to human nature. Realizing he had become a hostage, he said, "Mr. Xu is probably not here to kill me, otherwise, with his ability, he could have acted much earlier."

However, something seemed to have triggered a nerve in Dai Song, making it impossible for him to remain calm. He sweated profusely, his eyeballs darting rapidly between Xu Huo and Dr. Duor, as if deeply shaken.

Everyone was sitting here, and the vines outside were almost burying the car, but these two appeared determined not to give up until this matter was resolved. Cao Qinglin couldn’t help but remind them, "Everyone calm down, let’s discuss this when we reach a resting place!"

"Yeah, we’ve been traveling together for so long, a little delay won’t hurt..." Qiu Ming squeezed in beside Dr. Duor, naturally standing on Xu Huo’s side and staying alert in case Dai Song suddenly acted. At that moment, a small gadget on his clothes started blinking, causing him to pause and then say, "His mental state is unstable, he might be poisoned!"

"Who’s poisoned..." Dai Song instinctively asked, but seeing the three before him—whether it was Qiu Ming, Xu Huo, or Dr. Duor—all looking at him with strange eyes, his expression momentarily faltered. He quickly snapped back to clarity and stuffed two pills into his mouth.

After taking the antidote pills, his demeanor clearly improved, and when he looked at Xu Huo and Dr. Duor again, he wasn’t as agitated as before. After a pause, he said, "Many plants emit fumes that have slight toxicity. Even without an open wound, prolonged inhalation can result in poisoning symptoms."

"No wonder you’ve been like a ticking time bomb all the way," Qiu Ming said with a hint of mockery. "I thought all players from the Twin Cities must have brain issues."

Dai Song didn’t defend himself but responded to Xu Huo’s question, "We did prepare some doubles for the doctor. Concerning the doctor’s appearance, it’s not difficult to fool outsiders. Some players think the same as you, even suggesting that the old photos the laboratory released before were fake."

"So, every team takes away a different person?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow. "Then, about the maps you’re carrying..."

"The maps are real, but the routes were planned out," Dai Song replied. "Everyone who receives the ’doctor’ is given a route map to ensure they don’t encounter each other."

"I don’t understand. Aren’t you supposed to send the doctor to the Secondary City? Why not choose the best players and avoid deceiving players from outside the zone?" Cao Qinglin believed that Chunsun Laboratory could even issue a mission bounty, getting outside players to cooperate in completing the task. After all, sending a few or more people doesn’t make a difference.

"We’d like to, but ever since we planned to send the doctor to the Secondary City, apart from mission players, there have also been many people coming to assassinate the doctor." Dai Song hesitated slightly before continuing, "Among these people are outside players. It seems someone is hiring outside players to kill the doctor."

So, players from outside the zone couldn’t be trusted at all. Before this, none of the teams they dispatched succeeded. They either died mysteriously or were ambushed halfway, especially on the supposedly safer route, where players seemed to infiltrate everywhere.

The Twin Cities players were severely lacking in advanced players, so until now, they hadn’t managed to send the doctor out successfully. The only choice left to them, an approach where players had some understanding and avoidance methods, was Heaven’s Ladder.

Of course, Heaven’s Ladder was also dangerous, but this danger could be divided.

"So there were Rank-B players or even Rank-A players intercepting along the way?" Qiu Ming pondered for a moment before asking, "Then why don’t they just come to the Capital City and kill?"

"This might be related to the doubles sent from the Capital City," Dai Song said with a hint of sorrow. "We have sacrificed many laboratory staff and players over time."

For a moment, the group in the car fell silent, not because they thought this instance was particularly difficult, but because they realized how dire the situation was for players in Zone 023. It’s just a Rank-C instance, yet they’ve lost so many people.

"Can you be sure there are Rank-B players intercepting midway?" Xu Huo asked.

Dai Song seriously considered for a moment before saying, "I’m sure."

"Why would a Rank-B player get involved in assassinating a normal person? It doesn’t sound like something they would do." Cao Qinglin looked at Xu Huo. "This instance might not be as simple as it seems. Players can trigger the instance in both the Capital City and the Secondary City, perhaps with different tasks on both sides."

As for the Rank-B players that Dai Song and the others believed were involved, they may actually be Rank-C players, only misidentified as Rank-B players due to the relatively low average level of Zone 023 players.

Xu Huo thought the same but decided to ask Dr. Duor about his research direction.

"Gene Reprogramming," Dr. Duor responded instinctively, then explained, "It’s not as profound as you think, nor as high difficulty, just addressing genetic defects of the Twin Cities’ residents, useful only to them, useless to others."

In other words, the potion he developed is only valuable to people from the Twin Cities, not worth competing for or destroying from outsiders’ perspective, given how backward the Twin Cities are; no one would target them.

"When it comes to genetic issues, a lot of complications usually arise," Cao Qinglin said with experience. "Dr. Duor’s research might have already exceeded what he perceives as valuable, but this remains an unknown for us players."

Xu Huo nodded, "Whether Rank-B players are involved or just competitions among the same instance players, our mission remains unchanged."

"However, since there’s another Dr. Duor among the other teams, it’s best not to have them meet."

He looked meaningfully at Dai Song, "You better ensure that the Dr. Duor we’re escorting is the real one."

Dai Song showed no extra emotion and confidently said, "I can swear on the lives of everyone in the Twin Cities, this Dr. Duor is real."

Although his account wasn’t entirely true, at least this statement was.

"The car is caught," Cao Qinglin reminded them.

This was a minor issue. Xu Huo loaded a poison into the medicine gun and shot at a larger branch from a gap in the vines.

The poison and pollutants quickly spread over the vines, turning large stretches of them black, causing the nearby plants to wither as well.

Mutant plants, sharper than ordinary ones, retreated upon sensing danger, even withdrawing the vines entwining the car as they circled around their already poisoned companions to leave.
