Chapter 1338: Chapter 1339: The Skills a Housekeeper Should Have

At the beginning, the medicine gun could still keep up, but as more and more wolf beasts appeared, Xu Huo and Dai Song gradually became a bit overwhelmed. These wolf beasts even knew how to cooperate to cause disturbances, not only targeting Xu Huo and Dai Song, who were semi-crouched on top of the car, but also focusing their attacks on the tires and windows.

The defense props couldn’t protect the car from every angle without a single blind spot, and given the number of wolf beasts, the car suffered some damage. Several specially reinforced glass windows were shattered, and there were deep scratches on the front passenger door, with the metal on both sides flipped up.

"They’re coming in from the front too!" Qiu Ming yelled while protecting Dr. Duor, looking ahead; the wolf beasts that had previously left the pack were now blocking their way, taking advantage of the car’s momentum, and several were poised to jump on!

At this moment, the car’s tires emitted a dull grinding sound as the mechanical being turned the steering wheel, forcing the car to spin half a circle to flank the attacking wolf beasts.

Repeated crashing sounds echoed from one side of the car. Subsequently, the mechanical being turned the car’s front half a circle again, reversing forward with the rear fortified, which was much stronger than the front windshield. So the wolf beasts that leaped at the back ended up thwarted by the rear window.

"Nice!" Qiu Ming praised the mechanical being, glancing at the surrounding wolf beasts almost pinning the car down, and instinctively asked, "Sister Housekeeper, any way to shake these things off..."

The mechanical being, appearing as a woman dressed in a formal housekeeper’s outfit, maintained a proper smile, then single-handedly pierced the glass beside her. A wolf beast clinging to the window was baring its fangs at her, only to be stabbed directly. She grabbed the wolf beast’s tongue and used it to slam the other wolf beasts away, leveraging the car’s weight to spin another half a circle, shaking off at least half the wolf beasts clawing at the car before flooring the gas pedal to speed ahead.

"Awesome!" Qiu Ming generously yelled his praise.

"You flatter me; this is the basic ability of housekeeping personnel." The housekeeper mechanical being resumed her grip on the steering wheel with both hands.

Although they temporarily escaped the predicament, the wolf beasts did not give up and soon closed the distance again.

The medicine gun in Xu Huo’s hand was empty. He kicked away the wolf beast that lunged at him and casually took out a lighter. With a few clicks, several nearby wolf beasts burst into flames.

Switches of fire lit up the night. Though the evolved wolf beasts were not as fearful of fire as ordinary animals, they couldn’t disregard the flames burning them. Under the howls of several wolf beasts, some sensibly broke away from their pack to smartly brush dirt onto their burning companions.

"Click! Click! Click!"

The sound of the lighter continued, and clusters of flames flickered in the grove, quickly being left behind.

Once they had completely lost the wolf pack, Xu Huo put away the lighter and looked back at the people in the car, "Everyone okay?"

"No injuries, just significant car damage," Cao Qinglin replied.

Several windows were gone, the exterior was covered in claw and bite marks, leaving barely a single intact area. The rear door on one side was wobbly, and two tires were on the verge of collapse.

"Find a place to change the tires," Xu Huo suggested, then asked Dai Song, "How far to the Tiandao Forest?"

"We need to speed up," Dai Song paused, "There’s a rest area not far ahead; we can pull over there."

It wasn’t long before they reached the mentioned rest area, which was actually an abandoned service area with only basic restroom and convenience store facilities, now almost entirely overgrown with plants.

Confirming there were no lurking mutant beasts inside, Dai Song directed the mechanical being to pull over to the side of the wall.

Changing the tires was simple with the help of the housekeeper mechanical being. Xu Huo and the other two worked simultaneously on both sides, fixing up the car doors in a matter of minutes. After confirming the car was mostly intact, the group hurriedly got back on the road.

However, they quickly noticed a significant increase in mutant plants. Many plants occupied the former props, and the car easily sank in. The road was soon entirely blocked.

Meters-high vine-like plants occupied a large area ahead, and it wasn’t just the road; even the groves on the roadside were undulating piles of vines, making passing through impossible. Such extensive vines require a lot of time to clear or burn as they move, and the situation here clearly isn’t suitable for a slow pace.

"Is there no other way?" Qiu Ming asked Dai Song.

Dai Song frowned, "I was following a map, but it hasn’t been updated for a long time. Mutant plants grow so fast; significant changes in a few weeks or even days are not surprising. This area might be completely blocked by these giant vines, forcing us to turn back and find a way through the woods, cutting directly to the other side of the mountain road."

Faced with the situation, retreating seemed the only option, but unexpectedly, as they prepared to backtrack, the surrounding vines started moving rapidly!

Startled, Dai Song quickly urged the mechanical being, "Drive fast!"

Unfortunately, they couldn’t make it out before the way back was blocked. In just a few seconds, they were encircled by small hill-like vines with narrow gaps through which the car couldn’t possibly fit.

"Just clear the path directly," Xu Huo, being action-oriented, swiftly adjusted the plan, using the "Cake Cutter" to slice through the vine piles and pulling them apart with the spatial barrier, though these were heavier than expected and cumbersome to move.

Still, the car slowly began to inch along the original path.

"This is too slow," Dai Song’s gaze remained fixated on the distant grove, seemingly concerned about any potential appearance of the Alien.

"If any mutant beasts appear, we’ll know," Qiu Ming, now outside the car helping Xu Huo, shouted back, "You should be helping us!"

"I need to protect the doctor," Dai Song stayed inside the car, taking out some potions, "These can slow the growth of the vines."

Without further comment, Qiu Ming accepted the potions.

Feeling somewhat apologetic, Dr. Duor spoke to Dai Song, "This area is relatively safe; perhaps you could..."

But before he could finish, Dai Song interrupted him, "Dr., my task to protect you doesn’t mean I have to follow your words. My goal is to get you safely to the Secondary City."

"My request might be a bit excessive..." Dr. Duor said no more but watched Xu Huo and Qiu Ming ahead with concern.

"He claims to be selflessly escorting, but it feels a bit much for us players to be out here doing the dirty work while he stays safely in the car," Qiu Ming, wanting to stay in the car to protect Cao Qinglin, felt displeased, "If he’s worried about danger, it would be better to clean up these mutant plants sooner so everyone can leave earlier."
