Chapter 1334: Chapter 1335 The Contradictory Facts

Xu Huo did not oppose the slicked-back player’s addition, and even invited his companions along, "Since our goals are the same, the more people, the safer."

The man standing opposite him reached up to smooth his shiny hair, "My brothers have families to care for; they won’t take the risk."

Other players present stayed silent, a sign of prior agreement, but showed a bit of concern after the slicked-back man spoke.

Only the elderly white-haired man remained opposed, worried about Dr. Duor’s safety, distrusting players from outer regions, even suggesting again to raise the price to have all slicked-back player’s companions protect Dr. Duor together.

No one paid him heed, only Dr. Duor turned to console him briefly, promising to contact him as soon as he reached Secondary City.

Eventually, all parties agreed to cooperate; the slicked-back player, Dai Song, disguised Dr. Duor’s appearance, placed a special item on him, turning him into a player—it was the most convenient method.

Carrying a regular person draws too much attention among players, so it’s best if everyone appears as players, especially when entering Heaven’s Ladder, since not everyone there is for Dr. Duor.

There is, of course, an alternate plan, where Xu Huo and Dai Song disguise themselves as ordinary people in different ways.

This is no easy feat; just as it’s hard for ordinary people to disguise as players, players struggle to seem ordinary, even beyond wearing props, differing breathing rhythms, and enhanced evolved physical strength set them apart.

Dr. Duor relied on items to transform into a "player"; the disguise’s effectiveness might be unmasked, though the alternate strategy could delay recognition—mainly to guard against assassination.

Real or fake, if someone notices Dr. Duor’s item, they won’t immediately target him.

"In that case, why not let me go with you?" The elderly white-haired man suggested, "You could just disguise me as Dr. Duor."

Dr. Duor was the first to oppose, while Xu Huo replied, "You wouldn’t be helping; taking you requires dividing our focus to protect you too, and if you’re okay with being sacrificed, consider that co-players might easily abandon you to protect another."

Obviously clear, others aren’t foolish; he wouldn’t add delay or disguise, but would lose his life.

Clear words didn’t need persuasion; the elderly man solemnly bowed to Xu Huo and Dai Song, "I entrust Dr. Duor to you both."

"I will strive to protect the Doctor," Dai Song assured.

The three left the basement, the disguised Dr. Duor looking burly rather than his original slender build, Xu Huo trailing behind, reminding him to adjust his stride, and said, "The car is at your eleven o’clock, just greet them normally."

Following instructions, Dr. Duor got into the front passenger seat; Xu Huo and Dai Song took the rear.

"Drive," Dr. Duor smoothly told Qiu Ming.

Qiu Ming instinctively glanced back at Xu Huo but was silenced by a kick from Cao Qinglin, starting the car.

The journey out of the city remained untroubled.

"Is it necessary?" Seeing Xu Huo relaxed, Dai Song asked, "We’re not being followed."

That’s the odd part; after leaving the basement, Xu Huo noticed at least six players within five hundred meters observing them, yet no one followed outside city limits... unclear about those people’s intentions, but he doubted their disguise could fool everyone, even the lab attackers would’ve left surveillance props for secondary info. These people too easily gave up precisely where Dr. Duor was hidden.

But there’s no need to explain this to Dai Song, he simply replied, "Safety first."

"Mr. Xu is right, being cautious is best," Cao Qinglin’s gaze flickered between Dr. Duor and Dai Song, settling on the former, "This must be Dr. Duor."

Both turned back to her, "How can you tell?"

"Your posture and demeanor," Qiu Ming added, "People who frequently run instances have different eyes, and wouldn’t show such fear."

Dr. Duor was troubled, "I guess the disguise isn’t convincing enough; can it fool other players?"

"Little problem," Xu Huo said, "We have an alternate plan, even if recognized, we have time to figure out friend or foe."

It’s hard to create flawless disguises without professionals, some semblance will suffice.

"Close observation over time results in exposure; merely passing by or brief encounters aren’t as easy to uncover." He added, "Doctor, pretend to rest, avoid eye contact with outsiders, and if you do, treat them as lab patients."

"That’s a good idea." Dr. Duor relaxed, leaning back to rest.

Not long before the car began to jolt.

Qiu Ming frowned at the overwhelming greenery ahead, "The car won’t last long, we’ll have to walk soon."

This was still near Twin Cities’ Capital City, not yet into Heaven’s Ladder.

"Here’s the original Heaven’s Ladder route map," Dai Song handed the map forward, "Though it’s the old tourist path, somewhat winding, it’s also the shortcut through Heaven’s Ladder, fewer mid-stops, typically taking two to three days."

"The path is now covered by mutant plants but remains better than others, skirting areas overtaken by them; I estimate five days to cross."

The original Heaven’s Ladder tour generally lasted five days.

Mentioning this, Dai Song became nostalgic, "Back then, trains were brought in from different districts."

Unfortunately, after outer invaders took over districts, those ceased to exist.

"Weren’t you brought in by district government residents from outer areas?" Cao Qinglin questioned, "023 District’s natives were nearly wiped out, weren’t they?"

Dai Song couldn’t contain his surprise, "023 District’s natives wiped out? Who told you that?"

"Over twenty years ago, didn’t 023 District undergo mass evolution?" Cao Qinglin specified, "Many ordinary people evolved, but many also died."

"You must’ve come from the desert district." Dai Song quickly understood, "Twenty years ago indeed there was a major evolutionary event, fatalities were high, and nearly half of 023 District transformed into desert due to climate change, yet over half survived."

Cao Qinglin involuntarily glanced at Xu Huo: So was Mr. Chi’s group lying? What were those numbers about?
