Chapter 1330: Chapter 1331 New Hope
Mr. Chi’s demeanor remained unchanged, "I’m not saying this to garner your sympathy for Zone 023, but just to clarify for the sake of this child. Although he’s young, he’s not someone who can’t distinguish right from wrong, nor has he grown up to have a distorted worldview because of the peculiar environment of Zone 023."
"I can see that." Xu Huo replied, compared to others, the players from Zone 023 appear to be more ’upstanding gentlemen’.
"I apologize on his behalf," Mr. Chi continued, "and thank you for sparing them."
They understood that if Xu Huo and his companions hadn’t been lenient, Xiao Lai and his group would have already been dead.
Showing his commitment, Mr. Chi arranged for the masked man to guide them to the Twin Cities once he knew they were heading there.
"There are two Twin Cities, the nearest one is the Capital City, the further one is the Secondary City. If you want to go to the Capital City, you can leave early tomorrow morning and reach by evening. There’s no better place to rest around here, so you can spend the night here."
"The temperature from here to the Capital City of the Twin Cities is high, even at night. Staying in such a high-temperature environment for a long time will quickly drain your energy."
Looking out from this small town, there was indeed no better place to stop. Seeing Qiu Ming and Cao Qinglin tempted, Xu Huo agreed to stay for the night.
The ground was so hot that many people could only cram into underground holes or passages. Players usually aren’t too particular about it in the game; a sleeping bag on the ground in a tunnel suffices.
There were just three children here. However, the remaining dozen or so Evolvers were different from the players. They seemed to be chronically ill, coughing and wheezing for long periods at night, some even paralyzed and unable to breathe. Mr. Chi and others were used to it and paid attention to whom got sick to help feed them medicine, with very little conversation, maintaining a calm environment.
The three children, however, had no issues; the two smaller ones were even sharing candies.
Early the next morning, Cao Qinglin inquired about the situation here. Essentially, the adults were the victims of evolution; the older ones had died over the past twenty years, while the younger ones survived but with severe aftereffects, like the parents’ generation of Xiao Lai. However, the children born later, who hadn’t been directly injected with Evolver’s Blood, were unaffected, at least for now, appearing completely normal.
"That’s considered good news." Qiu Ming said, "Children are the hope after all."
Although they sympathized with Zone 023’s plight, all they could do was leave behind some supplies, as they couldn’t help in any other way.
Before dawn, guided by the masked man and the female player Jian Yue, the three set off.
The masked man’s name was Jian Li, and he was Jian Yue’s cousin. Neither of them liked to talk much, and Qiu Ming and Cao Qinglin’s attempts to engage with them multiple times during the journey were unsuccessful.
They originally wanted to ask about the Twin Cities, but these two just focused on leading the way without answering.
As Mr. Chi mentioned, after passing the small town, it was indeed all a high-temperature zone. Although they didn’t encounter any Aliens, the environment of Zone 023 itself was more dangerous. No one would have thought that under such high temperatures, poisonous insects and snakes could still be active — these poisonous creatures had adapted to the current high-temperature environment.
To avoid being bitten, they had to continuously use Defense Props along the way. It was too hot to wear protective suits.
Cao Qinglin suffered a lot, as her injuries weren’t healed, and the lingering poison wasn’t cleared. As noon approached, when the temperature was highest, she began to vomit, even regurgitating the water she drank.
Jian Yue fed her some specially made liquid, and everyone stopped to rest at that spot.
"High temperatures can trigger a chain reaction in the body. With her severe injuries, it’s best to find a way to cool down." Jian Li said.
"Are both Twin Cities in high-temperature areas?" Xu Huo wiped the sweat off his face. Upon receiving a positive response, he glanced at Cao Qinglin, "Are you feeling any better?"
"That liquid is quite effective, better than potions." Cao Qinglin forced a smile and added, "The game is really unfriendly to me. I haven’t even entered the instance yet, and I’m already risking half my life."
"No need to worry too much, once inside the Twin Cities, they sell specialized cooling instruments." Jian Yue wrung out her soaked clothes, "It’s much more convenient, specifically prepared for players from outer zones."
"You can’t enter the Twin Cities?" Hearing a hint of something else in her words, Qiu Ming casually asked.
"We can enter, but we can’t take things out," Jian Li said, "The instruments sold in the safe zone all have tracking devices, so they’re useless even if bought."
So, after entering the High Temperature Zone, they could only endure it.
"It’s just..." Qiu Ming was momentarily speechless, so he said, "The District Government really keeps a strict watch over you guys."
After that, there was another period of silence. Both sides waited quietly until Cao Qinglin recovered somewhat, and then they resumed their journey.
Because of the delay on the road, they arrived at Twin Cities A Point later than expected. Just after rounding a hill, they could see a not-insignificant defensive wall stretching between two mountains. It marked the completion of Jian siblings’ task.
"The safe zone doesn’t prohibit players from entering and leaving, but they generally don’t open the main gates. You can get in by yourselves, and also, once you reach the forested area, there will be mutant animals active, so be careful."
After giving these simple instructions, the siblings turned back.
Watching their backs, Qiu Ming couldn’t help but remark, "These people are really strange."
"Everyone is different; there’s nothing strange about it." Cao Qinglin reminded him to catch up with Xu Huo in front.
Mutant plants grew abundantly in these forests, and under the sunset, large swathes of them appeared dark green and glossy at a glance, emitting a thick plant-like odor that was unpleasant.
The three put on their protective suits and quickened their pace toward the safe zone gate. As they stepped into the woods outside the gate, a group of small birds and beasts were startled into flight, gathering into a dark mass and diving towards them after circling once.
After activating their Defensive Barriers, they didn’t slow down, just slightly dodging the center and passing through the flock from the side.
A bit of minor resistance was nothing, but no sooner had the bird swarm passed out view than several large mutated animals appeared. These Aliens, with heads like crocodiles and bodies like rhinoceroses, were entirely white, with reflective scales sporadically dotting their skin. Under the sunlight, the light spots reflected off them were actually a bit dazzling.
"Moo..." A few Aliens let out deep, bovine calls and charged fiercely towards them, but they were slow, and easy to overtake without direct confrontation. However, a lot of Aliens followed behind.
"Let’s just go in." Xu Huo said, promptly stepping onto the defensive wall of the safe zone.
Many weapons and instruments were set up on the high platforms atop the defensive wall, but they didn’t react to players, and there were no players on duty nearby. After a brief pause, he moved along the high platform and leaped down into the Twin Cities.
