Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Sudden Change in the Situation
"In recent days, unrest has erupted in Country Y with a large number of unidentified terrorists robbing armories and carrying out indiscriminate massacres. According to incomplete statistics, eleven cities have already fallen to the flames of war, and Country Y has declared this the most appalling atrocity of the century..."
"...Several high-ranking officials have disappeared from their homes at the same time and remain missing. The supreme ruler of Country B has vowed to strike with heavy firepower against those disrupting the order of Country B..."
"The supreme ruler of S Country’s whole family was brutally murdered in their villa..."
"...Twenty-nine mass exterminations occurred in H Country within one week..."
"Seven passenger planes in W Country vanished into thin air..."
"...A tsunami in N Country submerged a third of the country..."
"...The sudden outbreaks of riots and crime have become the prelude to global turmoil, with frequent criminal incidents in various countries. There are cultists who claim to be Pioneers of Evolvers spreading everywhere, and some people on online platforms have even proclaimed their intent to destroy nuclear bases, providing specific information..."
Xu Huo drove while tuning the radio. In just a few days, almost all public channels, television, and online platforms were filled with reports of the riots. Apart from some possibly caused by players, most were violent acts initiated by the local populace after the unrest, such as robbery, assault on state institutions, large-scale protests, and even political upheaval in some smaller nations.
Once the fuse was lit, the whole world was drawn into the chaos in an extremely short time, including the cities he passed through.
Although the nation deployed the military and armed police immediately, uncontrollable factors remained. Explosions occurred frequently in the city, and a large number of residents fled, looting for supplies as no place was safe, and bloodshed was common, with repeated suppression followed by rebounds.
The larger the city, the more uncontrollable it became. Some cities near Sea City had already been sealed off, forbidding any entry or exit, and all problems had to be resolved internally unless they grew so large that none of the city’s violent forces could suppress them.
Seeing that Sea City was nearing, Wang Chaoqing shrank in the back seat and said fearfully, "Brother, let’s not go to Sea City. Those foreign players might specifically target big cities. Plus, Sea City is one of the leading economic powerhouses along the coast, with countless smart and educated people. There must also be a large number of players who survived the initial selection. If fighting breaks out, we might just end up becoming cannon fodder!"
"The number of players who have arrived isn’t significant; there won’t be widespread one-on-one battles. Some lower-level players will be worn down by the national machinery. Soon, someone will come forward to negotiate."
Xu Huo focussed on the road ahead, his expression unchanged.
Having passed through so many cities, and even deliberately detouring to observe some of the more dangerous ones, the initial chaos was mostly local Evolvers and criminals emerging. The situation was still within control.
This indicated that the Tickets and instance cards had trapped most players from outside areas.
The real trouble was with some high-level players. They might have accessed the area through different channels and probably wouldn’t leave Zone 014 without finding Super Props.
"What does this have to do with us?" Wang Chaoqing hugged his arms. "I just want to survive."
Xu Huo ignored him and entered Sea City after showing his credentials at the checkpoint.
As a super metropolis, Sea City remained relatively stable. There were many vehicles and pedestrians on the streets, though most hurried on their way. Places like malls had no shortage of people, all focused on the news on televisions and smartphones.
After parking, Xu Huo casually found a restaurant with window seating and sat down.
"Hello, what would you like to order?" The waiter hurried over.
The Girl in the painting ordered a few dishes, and the waiter said apologetically, "We don’t have this special supply of meat today. The city is sealed off, and some goods can’t be brought in. Maybe you’d like to choose another dish."
"I’ve just come from outside, and Sea City seems to be holding up well," Xu Huo said.
The waiter looked at him in surprise, "You came from another city? The news said many cities have forbidden entry and exit."
"I left early," Xu Huo paused, then added, "Sea City is a metropolis after all. It’s bound to be much safer."
"Of course," the waiter agreed wholeheartedly, "Many of my friends from other places say they dare not even step outside, staying hidden indoors without daring to turn on the lights. The daytime vandalism is nothing compared to the cannibalistic monsters that roam at night. It’s terrifying!"
"But once the city is sealed, no one can go anywhere. We can only hide at home in fear."
"Compared to those places, Sea City is much better off. The streets are patrolled by the police, and going out isn’t a big deal."
Xu Huo complimented the merits of a big city and ordered another dish. The waiter left with a smile.
"Bro, you really had foresight," Wang Chao said, giving a thumbs up. "Coming to Sea City early on."
Xu Huo turned his head to watch the news on the big screen in the square without responding.
Even a fortified central city like Jing City couldn’t guarantee safety, yet Sea City was so calm. That was the most abnormal thing.
What exactly were they planning?
*
"What the hell are they up to!" An elder in military attire pounded the table, expressing his anger. "In less than an hour, fifty players have died! No warnings, no demands, almost one person killed every minute, all of them elite!"
The other elders in the conference room also had grim expressions on their faces.
After the announcement of the appearance of Super Props, they responded immediately, elevating the alert level of all cities to the highest and placing a heavy guard on some secret cities, fearing players would target these locations.
This indeed had some effect; some of the impacted areas did not suffer catastrophic damage, and there were none like in Country Y where people emptied armories.
Jing City faced some crises, but as the national heart, its original players, along with the elite players who had converged from across the country, formed a sizable force. In coordination with the military, they managed to suppress those people temporarily after making some sacrifices.
Before they could strategize a solution for the next issues, the Bureau of Special Matters began to have casualties.
To face the crisis, they and the significant players chosen had already moved to safe zones. But these people kept dying one after another, in such gruesome ways that one could hardly bear to look!
In the first ten minutes, they dispersed all the players to hide, but no matter where the players hid, their fate could not be changed. Fifty had died within an hour. And as the military-dressed elder vented his frustration, two more were added to the toll.
"Are they planning to kill all the players in Jing City?" another white-haired elder said.
"According to the information we have so far, only players from the Bureau of Special Matters are being massively killed," said the bureau chief, speaking up from the other end of the conference table screened on a computer.
