Chapter 112: The Cruel Law of the Jungle
Chapter 112: Chapter 112: The Cruel Law of the Jungle
As soon as Lin Pei’s voice fell, Ke Liang and Gu Yu charged him—one from the front and one from the back. Ke Liang threw punches head-on, making Lin Pei stumble back several steps before quickly ducking low, and then Gu Yu, who followed, leapt up, raised her arms to block the incoming sword, and with both knees clamped Lin Pei’s head as she knelt backward, causing both of them to tumble onto the suspension bridge!
Lin Pei landed on his back, and Gu Yu, propping herself up with her hands, took a large step forward and quickly turned around; almost in unison with Ke Liang, they struck, one slashing at his throat with a knife and the other grabbing his right leg and twisting it violently!
On the narrow suspension bridge barely over a meter wide, this teamwork was unexpectedly effective. Lin Pei was stunned from the start, yet he reacted swiftly, parrying Gu Yu’s deadly move with his sword while spinning in the direction of Ke Liang’s forceful twist, his other foot striking Ke Liang’s shoulder with great power!
Ke Liang winced in pain and began to fall toward the underside of the bridge, spotting the writhing Aliens below, he hurriedly grasped the chains in terror!
By then, Lin Pei had managed to get up and, after shoving aside Gu Yu’s knife, sent a kick flying her way!
Gu Yu crossed her arms over her chest to forcefully take the kick, only to have one of her arms broken by the impact!
She staggered backward in disbelief, looking at Lin Pei, "How are you so strong! Are you a Cannibal Player?"
Lin Pei spat out the dust in his mouth and spat again to the ground, "It’s not just the Cannibal Players whose physical evolution is strong. Haven’t you heard of evolution rates? My evolution rate has already reached 26%, and with a few more Potions, I can reach 30% and evolve to the next stage."
In the face of such astonishment, Gu Yu’s expression turned grave, "So you have been hiding your true strength all along."
"Dimensional Rift, the emergence of Cannibal Players is a disaster for all of humanity; countless people die every day because of the game, and only Players can combat these unknown dangers."
"Moreover, the survival rate of players in the instances is also low; it’s considered good if a third of the people make it out alive. Especially in times like these, players should unite more than ever, striving to increase the chances of survival for as many people as possible!"
"But there are people like you, intent only on infighting. The outcome of such internal strife is to nip potential players in the bud. When the time comes, not to mention threats from other players in the game, even attacks from other countries in the real world could be unstoppable!"
"Once a nation falls, how many will die in the conflict?"
"Don’t you have a family? It’s deplorable!"
Hearing this, Lin Pei laughed instead, "What does national justice have to do with me?"
"How vast is the world of the game, not just our world. Once inside the game, we are all Players. There are only three types of players: black, white, and red; there are no distinctions of race or country. To survive in this game, other than increasing levels and evolution rates, there is no other way."
"You think a bunch of weaklings together stops being weak? That’s just a flock of weaklings."
"Just look at you guys. Killing you is not a difficult task for me."
"Considering what you’ve said, if I obtain more items to enhance my level and become stronger, can’t I protect more people?"
"Why are you wasting your breath on him?" Ke Liang, clutching his fingers, said, "People like him are selfish and only think of themselves, willing to harm others for a bit of gain—totally devoid of any sense of right or wrong!"
"When he first entered Fenbei Town, Wu Qiuyi helped him. And what was the result?"
"Xu Huo was in such a dire situation when facing the enemy head-on, yet she survived, only to end up being killed by a comrade she trusted!"
A Flying Arrow pierced through Ke Liang’s thigh, and he screamed in agony, collapsing to the ground!
"Ke Liang!" Gu Yu cried out, poised to rush to his aid, but then saw the slingshot in Lin Pei’s hand whirling towards her.
She hastily retreated, but her foot got snagged, as if dragged down by a sticky rope that caused her to fall to the ground!
Lin Pei suddenly sped up, charged in front of her, and delivered a vicious kick to her abdomen!
"Cough!" Gu Yu’s stomach acids refluxed, causing her to retch as she slid several meters away and hit the chains, nearly falling off but was held up by Lin Pei.
She hung halfway off the suspension bridge, grabbing the chains and lashed out a series of kicks at the person approaching her!
Lin Pei effortlessly deflected her attack, stepped on one of her feet, and pinned it to the bridge with his sword!
"Ah!!" The intense pain caused Gu Yu to jerk her upper body upward; however, before she could even reach for the sword, she took a knee to the temple!
As she lay dazed on the ground, Lin Pei walked over, stepped on her head, and demanded, "Now, tell me, who is it that you’re trying to protect?"
Blood ran from Gu Yu’s nose and mouth. With both hands she clutched at his leg, glaring at him with loathing, "What does it matter if you kill me? You’ll never be able to leave this town!"
Lin Pei’s eyebrows furrowed. As he was about to speak, he suddenly felt a rush of air from behind. He swiftly turned aside only to see Shen Xin, who had been unconscious, now right in front of him: "Panda Strike!"
"Panda Strike!"
"Panda Strike!"
Shen Xin rammed into him three times. On the first strike, Lin Pei quickly pulled out the sword and planted it into the bridge but was driven back seven or eight meters with the sword in tow. On the second, he was hurled into the air, and on the third, Shen Xin leaped up to add an extra hit in midair!
Three consecutive strikes nearly made Lin Pei vomit blood. He hastily used his grappling rope to ease the momentum but broke three chains before he could somewhat dissipate the force, and even then, he still rolled away to half the distance of the bridge!
The flashlight in Wang Chaoqing’s hand slid onto the bridge, its beam cutting through where Ke Liang and others stood and shone onto the other side of the bridge where Lin Pei had fallen.
At that moment, with three chains snapped, the bridge shook violently. The hefty impacts rang out with a creaking noise from all around, and the Aliens below grew even more restless!
"Is the bridge going to break? I don’t want to be eaten alive!" Wang Chaoqing hugged his head and wailed.
"Shut up!" Ke Liang roared back while vigilantly monitoring the movement of the bridge. Fortunately, the remaining chains were still stable, and the shaking seemed to lessen. He steadied himself on his feet, about to walk towards Gu Yu and Shen Xin who lay on the ground, when suddenly a slender shadow shot through the light and swiftly wrapped around Shen Xin, dragging her away!
Shen Xin had been injured already. In her desperate situation, she had exerted herself beyond normal to strike three times in a row. The recoil on her own body wasn’t minor, and once she fell, she could hardly stand. The grappling rope left her with no chance to resist.
"Shen Xin!" Gu Yu, not far away, immediately reached out to pull, but after being dragged out two meters, she was flung away, forced to watch helplessly as Shen Xin was pulled toward Lin Pei.
Seeing Lin Pei standing up with his sword, she yelled, "If you kill Shen Xin, you can forget about knowing the way out!"
Lin Pei pressed a foot against Shen Xin, "What are you talking about?"
"The exit up ahead is already closed; you can’t get out that way. The only way is to turn back to the town and exit through the west gate. Only we know how to open it. If you kill Shen Xin or any one of us, then we all die together!"
Lin Pei’s expression changed abruptly, the tip of the sword resting against Shen Xin’s neck, "What do you mean? Why is the exit locked?"
"Why do you think we turned back?" Gu Yu, with Ke Liang’s help, stood up and looked ahead, "The chain on the gate is broken; it’s impossible to open the door from the inside."
