Chapter 1094: Chapter 1094: Excavator 114
The two exchanged glances, both spotting the shock in each other’s eyes: that sound was indeed coming from underground!
"Could it be that something has mutated again!"
The pair quickly took to the air, the increasingly closer sounds causing their hairs to stand on end, but just when they felt that the thing underground was about to break through the surface, the noise suddenly stopped.
A lengthy silence filled the jungle.
Pu Gaoshan signaled to Wang Mo, and the two turned and left, not even bothering to retrieve the equipment they had deployed.
Not far away, Xu Huo and Zhou Yuanzhu also heard the noise, unclear about what it was, and like Pu and Wang, they silently left the scene.
It was indeed a bit troublesome to evade Wang Mo’s micro-surveillance devices without alerting him, so Xu Huo decided to change direction and head towards Zhao Xiaofang and Cao Zheng instead.
Just like Wang Mo, Zhao Xiaofang and Cao Zheng were also placing things into the Alien Nest—a specially made poison gel capsule.
Indeed, they were using Variant Cubs to attract the attention of the Different Species Group in order to protect Xiaohe City from a direct beast surge, but they weren’t capturing the cubs alive as described.
"Not sure if I should call them dumb or stupid," Zhou Yuanzhu couldn’t help but complain, "If we really had caught a cub and gone to meet up with them, do they really think they could just abandon us and run away?"
"Maybe they think we’ll die trying to steal the cubs." Xu Huo said.
"They’re all muscle-brained simpletons; otherwise, they wouldn’t have become wanted criminals," Zhou Yuanzhu said, looking at Xu Huo and adding, "I’m not underestimating the people of Xiaohe City, it’s just that these troublemakers should have died sooner rather than congregating here. Is the survival rate in high-risk instances so high? Or is there a fixed coordinate here, a Holy Land for fugitives fleeing the Original Wormhole Point?"
"Don’t be so hot-tempered," Xu Huo gestured with his chin toward the people setting the bait ahead, "Once they leave, we’ll steal the bait. Without the cub delay, the Different Species Group might reach Xiaohe City very soon. Without enough materials, how will they build a second Safe City?"
Zhou Yuanzhu fell silent for a moment, "There’s no need for that; besides Players, there are two or three hundred ordinary people in Xiaohe City."
"Feeling pity for them?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow, "They may not pity you."
"Did you see the women on the streets when you entered Xiaohe City?"
Oppressing the weak—this is a phenomenon present in any civilization, not just in games.
Compared to Players, ordinary people are weak, but compared to ordinary men, ordinary women are even weaker. One can imagine the inhuman treatment they might suffer. Compared to the lowest-status men in society, their situation is much more tragic.
Maybe there are innocents among the ordinary people of Xiaohe City?
Zhou Yuanzhu remained quiet, but Xu Huo went on, "There should be more than just a few women you saw in Xiaohe City; the back half of the commercial building might hold many more. Not to mention ordinary people, even Players could be among them."
Zhou Yuanzhu was taken aback, incredulously saying, "They’re keeping women in the back for..."
She stopped mid-sentence, her expression filled with ineffable anger, and after a moment, cursed, "A bunch of beasts!"
Moments later, she couldn’t help but look towards Xu Huo, "Is this what you forced out of the Xiaohe City Players?"
In a manner of speaking, yes, Xu Huo nodded.
Zhou Yuanzhu said admiringly, "You really are something."
The people of Xiaohe City are all extremely vicious, and even if they are controlled, they might not reveal the truth. Guan Shu is still a Rank-B player, and without falling out with the players from Xiaohe City, he doesn’t have a better way to gather information, especially because players are not easily tricked by common hypnotic devices or truth serum potions.
"Do you know anything else?" Zhou Yuanzhu promptly asked, "Share it with us."
Xu Huo glanced at her and pointed to the ground.
"That sound again." Zhou Yuanzhu refocused, "Has it dug through already?"
"Should we change locations again?" she asked: "We have a Mechanical War Eagle made by Ruan Qiyuan here, just put it in and we won’t have to go down."
Xu Huo nodded and did as she said.
However, not long after they left with Zhao Xiaofang and Cao Zheng, they heard that sound again.
Zhao and Cao quickly left, and Zhou Yuanzhu could no longer stay calm, "Do you feel like this thing is following us?"
Xu Huo felt the same, so he signaled Zhou Yuanzhu to retreat. Even after they separated, the sound didn’t stop but continued to "bang clank bang clank" chase after him.
"Gentleman’s Stance" lifted Xu Huo ten meters above the ground, and he put on the Invisibility Cloak to watch from above.
As the soil on the ground began to tremble with the approaching digging, both realized that the tunnel beneath might be larger than they had thought because a nearly six-meter-wide pit appeared in the forest the moment the soil and rock layer were breached!
They confirmed that the ground underneath had been hollowed out, but the fallen dirt and plants covered up whatever was supposed to burst forth, and after a few seconds without the anticipated alien emerging, Zhou Yuanzhu grew nervous. She looked up at Xu Huo, only to find him descending from the air, and heard him say to whatever was in the pit, "Come up." The stacked plants began to move, and then a mechanical hand covered in dust emerged, followed by a metal head without any facial features.
"114!" Zhou Yuanzhu recognized it, and exclaimed with a mix of shock and joy: "How did it get here!"
Before they arrived at Xiaohe City, they had found tire tracks not far from 114’s footprints and thought that 114 had been taken away by a player from Xiaohe City.
"It might have run in the wrong direction." Xu Huo called 114 up, and the Tool Robot climbed up using its hands and feet. After shaking off the dirt from its body, it came over to him to report that its task had been completed and to play back a segment of the task content.
The final command input by Ruan Qiyuan was to search for living people and buildings. Since it had gone in the wrong direction, it didn’t find buildings, but it did find people—the Zheng Da and Jiang Wenzhang who had entered the underground nest searching for Variant Cubs.
Xu Huo opened the task accident tab in the projection and found that it had been taken halfway by an alien thinking it was a toy.
The task failed at that moment, and it couldn’t return after exceeding its time, remaining stranded here.
Zhou Yuanzhu found it inconceivable, "It can even dig through rock layers, can’t it kill a few aliens?"
You’re asking too much of a robot.
"It’s called Digger 114." Xu Huo defended his work tool, "But it wasn’t without its gains."
He discovered a mineshaft in the task footage.
"What were Zheng Da and Wenzhang talking about afterward?" Zhou Yuanzhu was watching the task video, but the sound wasn’t recorded since it was too far away. She then switched the display to Xu Huo.
"The group that came with us"
"Perhaps among them, there still are"
