Chapter 1084: Doctor Xu

Chapter 1084: Chapter 1084: Doctor Xu

Miss Ma sat down in front of Xu Huo again, her voice slightly weary as she said, "Ask whatever you want to know, I will tell you everything I know."

Xu Huo once again took out his notebook and pen, the same room, the same table, the same questions as last time, only with added queries about her recent physical conditions, such as her sleep quality after taking medication and the like.

Miss Ma, tired of being questioned, said coldly, "I don’t believe you can keep me here forever. The longer it takes, the higher the chance Mr. Kang will find out!"

Xu Huo sighed with regret, closed his notebook, "Unfortunately, your assessment results still don’t meet the standards for discharge. We’ll meet again next time."

Seeing that he was really leaving, Miss Ma quickly asked, "Next time, when is next time?"

"In seven days," Xu Huo checked his work schedule, "next Tuesday."

Miss Ma suddenly turned to look at the calendar by her bed, which had marks she had scratched out with her nails, from one to seven. Seven days had already passed!

Her expression became bewildered once again. Although she spent a lot of time in a drowsy state, she was also lucid for a non-trivial amount of time and could clearly sense the passage of time. Although it hadn’t felt as long as the seven days marked on the calendar, it wasn’t short either. Why? Why had no one realized that Sun Jing was dead, that she was missing?

"This is wrong!" She stood up abruptly and after a moment of panic, pointed at Xu Huo and said, "It’s you! You’re the one affecting my sense of time! How much time has actually passed now!"

Xu Huo avoided her, opened the door, and left, calling "Zheng Da" over, saying to him, "Her condition fluctuates rapidly. Do not reduce her medication for now. If there is still no improvement in the next assessment, transfer her to Director Kang’s care."

Upon hearing the words "Director Kang," "Zheng Da"’s face took on a strange expression, but he agreed readily and added, "Just now, Zeng Shangping was called away by the director."

"My next patient for assessment is him... Never mind," Xu Huo said, "Let’s switch to Cao Zheng."

Both "Doctor Xu" and "Zheng Da" left, going to the room diagonally opposite Miss Ma’s.

Miss Ma leaned against the crack of the door, straining to hear the faint sounds from the other room. She vaguely heard words like "hallucination," "disrupted," and "affected." Nonetheless, when Doctor Xu came out, he had a smile on his face, "Patient 27 is not bad, showing improvement."

"Zheng Da" also chimed in, "Yes, it’s quite an improvement from before when he would wave a broom or a pen around, claiming it was some ’prop,’ and even attack himself in his fits."

Doctor Xu left to see the next patient, while "Zheng Da" arranged for Nurse Qian Zi to increase Miss Ma’s medication.

Watching the doctors, nurses, and patients coming and going outside the window, Miss Ma began to waver for the first time. She turned around, pulled open her hospital gown, and scratched a deep mark onto her shoulder. Then she pulled her clothes back on, sat down at the bedside, and two seconds later, feeling unsettled, lifted the mattress to make another new mark underneath.

Xu Huo was directly in front of her, only turning to leave for another room after she finished marking.

This place is a dungeon venue; he cannot open an instance within an instance, so he can only influence the players upstairs with his psychic power.

Not all could be influenced, thus he only targeted three rooms.

The first room held Sun Jing and Miss Ma, the second Cao Zheng and Qian Zi, and the third Zeng Shangping.

Out of these five people aside from Sun Jing and Miss Ma, the latter three were all Cannibal Players, Rank-C, not very high in Player Level, evidently characters who favored strength.

Being cautious, Xu Huo did not include more people but created illusions for these few. The scenes of Sun Jing’s death and Qian Zi acting as a nurse that Miss Ma saw were all fakes. However, upon learning from Zeng Shangping that there were indeed peculiar disappearances in Xiaohe City whenever new people arrived, he conveniently dispatched Sun Jing.

Just like Miss Ma, Qian Zi and the others were also trapped in a "psychiatric hospital."

From the previous conversation between Sun Jing and Miss Ma, three pieces of information were not hard to glean:

First, there was a place for detaining people behind this building, likely females.

Second, the women here were forced to give birth, but not a single child grew up.

Third, Mr. Kang and perhaps most of the players here could be Cannibal Players.

Considering what Sun Jing knew, which was probably more than Miss Ma, and Miss Ma’s lingering feelings about her deceased child and her growing suspicion toward Mr. Kang, it was likely that these players were raising humans for food.

Looking at it this way, the imprisonment of females and the forced impregnation were not surprising.

The only item of value among Sun Jing’s belongings was a hand-drawn map, with five marked points. Two were close together, with the other three more scattered. The former was located to the northwest, and the latter to the east—these could be the locations of "Oasis."

Besides this, there was a filter maintenance record book, with detailed notes on each servicing of the equipment. While there were several instances of parts demands over a long span, several parts were repeatedly serviced without being replaced with new ones.

Xu Huo’s gaze lingered on the maintenance record for a moment before he entered Zeng Shangping’s room. A few minutes later, when he came out, Zeng Shangping followed, but he did not stay on this floor; instead, he went downstairs.

People upstairs and downstairs were attentive to the commotion outside, ensuring that Zeng Shangping was seen when he descended the stairs. Xu Huo returned to Miss Ma’s room and glanced at the person staring at the now healed wound on her shoulder, daydreaming. He sat back down at the desk, "How are you feeling today?"

Miss Ma looked at him, visibly haggard.

"What exactly are you trying to do?"

Xu Huo pulled out a photo from his notebook, "Do you still recognize who this child is?"

Miss Ma’s body leaned forward abruptly but then settled down, "Where did you get this photo from?"

"From your personal belongings." Xu Huo pointed to the side cabinet and asked, "Do you remember how the child died?"

Miss Ma’s teeth clattered, "Died of illness..."

"Really?" Xu Huo noted down her response, "Do you still remember the time you spent with your child?"

Miss Ma’s expression hardened, "I don’t remember anymore."

Xu Huo sighed, "Miss Ma, avoidance is not a solution. Did your child really die of an illness?"

"Do you still remember that you once suffered from postpartum depression?"

Miss Ma fixed her gaze on him, listening as he spoke, "During the illness, you had thoughts of harming the child. As a doctor, I can understand. Reality might be painful, but you must learn to accept it."

"Are you saying I killed my own child?!" Miss Ma stood up abruptly, "You’re talking nonsense!"

Xu Huo adjusted his glasses, smiling, "If not you, then who?"
