Chapter 1079: Chapter 1079 I Believe in Religion
The residence is on the second floor.
The commercial building’s first floor is about six meters high, making the second floor equivalent to the third floor of a typical residential building. However, this height isn’t considerable, especially under the watchful eyes of the "natives" gathered below. This height instantly reduces the sense of security to the lowest level, impacting not just women, but men as well.
"Can we move somewhere else, somewhere higher would be better," someone suggested.
Sun Jing said, "The floors above are being used by the Guardsmen; it would be inconvenient for you to go up there."
He did not specify what kind of inconvenience, but his troubled expression conveyed that the so-called "inconvenience" actually referred to their wariness of the Guardsmen.
In the end, everyone still rested on the second floor.
Dinner was in an hour.
The room was a four-person dormitory, after separating men and women, Chi Minghong and the others still came over to join Xu Huo and his group, peering through the gaps in the metal strips sealing the windows at the people outside.
"If you don’t look carefully, you might think these metal bars are for keeping people out," Zhou Yuanzhu muttered, then paused before adding, "But the fact that a significant number of ordinary people have survived suggests it should be safe here—just have to deal with those Players."
"There are at least thirty Players in this building," Guan Shu said soberly, "We should stall for as many days as possible, at least long enough to figure out if there are other risks in this high-threat instance."
This was essentially settling on a plan. After You Xuewen and the others nodded in agreement, they turned their gaze to Xu Huo and Chi Minghong; Chi Minghong said, "I have no objections. What about you, Old Xu?"
"Let’s just leave it at that for now," Xu Huo replied. How many days they could delay was not up to them but depended on when the Players in Xiaohe City would be ready to take action.
With a consensus reached, they all took the opportunity to rest. During this time, the girl who bit someone came looking for them, suggesting she wanted to stay with Chi Minghong.
Although Chi Minghong had saved her when she fell from District 002, he had no fondness for the people of District 002 and by extension harbored resentment towards her. Also, her injury meant she couldn’t move easily and had to look out for herself, so she had already made it clear in the bar that she wanted nothing to do with her.
However, the girl was quite astute. Seizing on the opportunity that she was soft-hearted, she neither sought Guan Shu, who had saved everyone, nor Xu Huo, who had given her a ride, but zeroed in on her.
Fearing that Chi Minghong might not take care of her, she quietly disclosed the truth, "A while ago, an uncle came to deliver water to that room, and he looked at me weirdly."
Everyone’s expression immediately darkened upon hearing this, and Chi Minghong turned to Xu Huo, "She seems quite shrewd; let’s let her stay."
Xu Huo asked the girl a question, "Are you still hungry?"
The girl dared not lie and nodded honestly. She then quickly added, "I definitely won’t bite anyone again, I was just delirious from hunger back then..."
"If you can hold back from eating a single bite during the meal later, you can stay with us for the next few days," said Xu Huo.
The girl reluctantly agreed.
An hour passed quickly, and Sun Jing came over again to invite them to have a meal on the fifth floor.
Upon reaching the fifth floor, they no longer saw just a few scattered Players. From the corridor to the dining room, people were standing both inside and outside. The scrutiny hidden in their gaze caused a natural sense of discomfort.
However, the discomfort was soon overshadowed by the aroma of food.
Upon entering the dining hall, everyone was struck by the abundant feast laid out on a long table: colorful fruits oozing with juice as if ready to spill out, red wine exuding a rich fragrance served in crystal glasses, heaped platters and bowls filled with various cooked dishes—the table seemed hardly able to hold it all. Then several chefs hauled over a huge silver platter. Though it was covered, a rich meaty aroma was already wafting out!
Zheng Da greeted them at the table, as he introduced a white-haired elder seated in the place of honor, "This is our Guard Squad captain, Mr. Kang."
Guan Shu had slightly underestimated the number of Guardsmen; just in this dining hall alone there stood at least thirty people, not to mention those patrolling the corridors outside and on different floors. Conservatively estimating, there might be a total of forty people.
In comparison to their own feeble and injured group, the individuals across were all vibrant and radiated a bold and fierce aura—it was common knowledge that these people, surviving in a world infested with Aliens, would be much more inclined towards violence than players on the outside.
By contrast, Mr. Kang, evidently older than the others, seemed the most refined.
And also the most formidable.
He greeted Guan Shu with a friendly face and invited them to take a seat, "The food is hastily prepared; I hope you don’t find our hosting lacking."
As he spoke, someone removed the lid from the tray, revealing the upper half of a Mutated Rhinoceros roasted to a golden brown, still sizzling with hot oil.
A Player carved a piece for Mr. Kang, who elegantly cut a morsel with his fork and knife and placed it into his mouth, chewing thoroughly before saying, "There are quite a number of different Aliens here we can eat from, but the tenderest meat comes only from this kind of Mutated Rhinoceros. It tastes best when freshly roasted. Please, have a taste."
Forget about being extraordinarily hungry—even a regular person starved for a day or two would only have an impulse to "devour" when faced with such a spread of delicious food.
Over twenty people sat along both sides of the long table; one of them tried a grape-like fruit and swallowed it, and with an expression of amazement the next second, began to stuff their mouth full of food in large handfuls.
The sounds of chewing and swallowing, along with the aroma of the food, made those who were waiting for Guan Shu and others to start eating unable to hold back any longer—soon, the second and the third one grabbed the food, and quickly only eager devouring sounds remained at the table.
"Everyone, eat slowly, there’s plenty of food left," Mr. Kang said with pleasure as he watched this scene, taking a sip of wine before looking towards Guan Shu and the others, "Does the food not suit your palate?"
At his gesture, the Players who were previously standing or sitting elsewhere in the dining room set down their food, stood up and proactively began cutting meat to place onto their plates.
"Aww, such a cute kid." A woman with red lips who came over to Xu Huo tried to pinch Tan Qi’s cheek, "And holding a child, is this your little brother?"
Tan Qi subconsciously shrank to the side. The woman’s hand followed, but before she could touch him, she was stopped by another hand. Xu Huo was somewhat pale, but his attitude was firm, "The child doesn’t like strangers touching him."
With a smile, the red-lipped woman then attempted to hold the baby in Tan Qi’s arms, "Holding a child like this, you won’t be able to eat properly, why not let me..."
She was interrupted before finishing her sentence, blocked by Xu Huo again.
When the woman looked up, she was visibly displeased and pushed a plate towards him, "This is the food we’ve saved up, especially to treat you."
Xu Huo glanced at the aromatic piece of meat and replied, "I am religious, and I do not eat meat."
With a sneer, the woman grabbed a bowl of fruits and retorted, "You don’t eat meat, but you can eat other things, right?"
