Chapter 1075: Chapter 1075: Traces of Humanity
A group of Aliens were rushing towards their location, roughly counting to over thirty.
However, even the ordinary people behind them were not very anxious, because compared to the Mutant Beasts they encountered before, this group seemed a bit less intelligent—they varied greatly in size, but the group of Mutant Beasts resembled fighting hens, with elongated necks, fluffy feathers, and heads pecking forward as they ran.
"Long necks and feathers, bodies covered in down, and sharp beaks, they kind of look like ostriches." Chi Minghong drew his Sword, "I’ll handle this."
"Hold on," Xu Huo said, "They run quite fast, just right for transportation."
Zhou Yuanzhu, already holding back her anger, immediately stepped forward, "There’s a leader, perfect!"
No sooner had she spoken than she moved a hundred meters away, then jumped twice in succession, changing into a set of armored protective clothing and directly mounting the lead Mutant Beast. As it turned its head to peck at her, she threw a small ball into its mouth, which automatically expanded inside, and ejected a rope from each side. Zhou Yuanzhu grabbed the ropes and pulled the Mutant Beast’s head back.
The Mutated Avian Beast screeched to a halt with its claws dug into the ground, then raised its tail to try and throw Zhou Yuanzhu off. However, she was unsuccessful; Zhou Yuanzhu’s shoes shot out two thin iron chains, threading through the wings of the beast and flipping it over!
Zhou Yuanzhu performed an aerial roll and landed steadily on the ground, while the leading bird beast was left lying upside down.
Soon the other bird beasts came to assist; a few aimed to intercept Zhou Yuanzhu while the others pecked at the iron chains. With each peck, they managed to spark off the iron chains.
"Pretty impressive!" Zhou Yuanzhu supplied a set of muzzles, securing their beaks before kicking them away one by one.
This group of bird beasts didn’t cooperate like the previous Different Species Group they had encountered. After being hit, they busied themselves with removing the contraptions from their mouths, completely disregarding helping out, crawling on the ground in a disheveled manner.
Then, an unexpected scene occurred: the large group of bird beasts following behind either landed upside down like the leader or rolled around like the others with cages on, lifting their claws to scratch at non-existent things on their faces.
"I’m almost moved to tears," Chi Minghong feigned wiping a corner of his eye, "To think we could encounter such adorable Mutant Beasts in a dangerous instance."
The others felt the same, as if what stood before them wasn’t man-eating monsters, but a group of tamed little dogs.
Zhou Yuanzhu quickly brought back the leading bird beast. The creature with the muzzle walked while trying to peck at her, but each attempt earned it a lash, and the rest of the bird beasts followed behind, imitating its movements.
"Can we really ride these?" The others were skeptical.
Xu Huo was interested. He picked one with a white neck, and this bird beast didn’t try to throw him off, still pecking at him with its beak.
But Xu Huo didn’t retaliate, instead he threw an apple into its mouth when it opened to peck.
"Crunch!" The white-necked beast closed its beak and crushed the apple, the fresh juice spattering out with a sweet scent, attracting the attention of several nearby bird beasts.
The white-necked one swallowed the apple with a "gulp" and then pretended as if nothing had happened, pecking at Xu Huo nonchalantly.
Perhaps due to their low average intelligence, this blatant act of "bribery" didn’t cause much of a stir.
Normal people couldn’t handle being bitten by the beasts, so apart from the leader, several others with muzzles were given to the people of District 002, two per beast, while the remaining four rode behind the Players.
The journey resumed comfortably, with Zhou Yuanzhu leading the way in front, followed by rows of bird beasts with increased speed and less burden on the people.
Now it was relatively easy to walk, and along the way they encountered two small groups of Aliens, both of which they effortlessly dealt with while also providing a full meal for the flock of birds and beasts.
Soon it was dawn, and they seemed to have reached the edge of the arid zone, with green grasslands appearing in the distance, and they also discovered the track of Excavator 114 nearby.
"Strange, why hasn’t 114 returned?" Ruan Qiyuan examined it for a while, "The machinery should be functioning properly."
"It’s either encountered an Alien or other Players," Xu Huo said indifferently: "Perhaps this wilderness survival will end soon."
Guan Shu and the others looked at each other, becoming more vigilant.
After running for another hour, they found tire tracks at the edge of a small swamp, not yet fully buried, indicating they were recent.
"Does this mean that there are still inhabitants in this high-risk instance?" Zhou Yuanzhu asked.
"High-risk instances barely have any indigenous inhabitants left; it should be Players who entered randomly." Guan Shu, experienced and savvy, said: "Think about it, what would the surviving indigenous inhabitants in such an environment look like."
They wouldn’t even be able to get past hunger.
"If 114 hasn’t returned, maybe it’s been taken by other Players," Ruan Qiyuan said. "They can’t be too far away; let’s chase them."
To the others, it seemed unnecessary to take this risk for a Mechanical Being, but considering that 114 was worth 30 million, Guan Shu still asked Xu Huo for his opinion.
Xu Huo said: "Let’s walk a bit further and see."
Guan Shu looked at him with a hint of confusion, then looked again at the tire tracks on the ground, and agreed to his suggestion.
After walking a bit more, they discovered tire tracks again, but this time there were two sets of marks.
Guan Shu’s complexion changed immediately, "Such a large vehicle couldn’t be stored in the luggage bay; even if it was assembled, it would require energy, and the energy ordinary Players can carry is limited... Could it be that there really are indigenous inhabitants here?"
"Whether they are indigenous inhabitants is not certain yet." Xu Huo knelt down to closely examine the marks, "But at least it implies one thing, even if there are indigenous inhabitants, their technological level wouldn’t be too high."
Bai Kou once lent him an Energy Cannon that used a New Type Energy Stone, which could be carried in the luggage bay, and if there was such a level of Energy Stone resources here, they wouldn’t fail to create flying vehicles; in such an environment, flying would definitely be safer than walking.
If these aren’t indigenous inhabitants, then the most likely scenario is that foreign Players have found a relic city, and the vehicles came from there.
"Regardless, it’s always good news, isn’t it?" Chi Minghong said: "There’s a place to rest now, don’t tell me we really have to ride a Mutant Beast for half a month in a wild chase?"
Even if people can endure it, Mutant Beasts won’t be so obedient, and along the way, they had to deal with two silly birds that came to their senses.
"If it’s just a few Players, it’s no big deal. If it’s the indigenous inhabitants, let’s reconsider," Ruan Qiyuan said.
The group reached a consensus and started to officially track along the tire marks.
