Chapter 1067: Chapter 1067: The Onslaught of Gluttonous Desire
The bar’s windows were shut just before the Alien could pounce in. Although the people inside didn’t see how those outside died, they could imagine with their toes that it must be terribly tragic. The confined space and narrow field of vision only amplified the fear, leading someone to yell, "I’d rather kill myself than be eaten alive," who then actually crashed into a sharp object in the bar!
At this moment, the Mutant Beast had surrounded the bar again, and just like before, they stood the beasts up on their side, continuing to push the building toward the edge of the cliff.
Guan Shu, who was still outside, saw the situation and, chased by the Aliens, put some distance between himself and the bar. He then released a transparent ring with six floating rhombus objects inside. The ring floated out of his hand and quickly dispersed, with each piece flying out a hundred meters before stopping. After stopping, each rhombus emitted a white arc of light that automatically connected to the next one below, eventually forming a ring about two hundred meters in diameter.
Then this ring, floating in mid-air, plunged from the sky like a ring-shaped guillotine and cut into the midst of the Different Species Group. With the momentum of its descent, the ring cut all the Mutant Beast beneath it in half. Maintaining a height of one meter above the ground, it spun rapidly, like slicing vegetables, and butchered all the beasts within its perimeter, including two extra-large Aliens who didn’t die immediately because of their large size—it was just that their limbs were severed.
Of course, such a handy Prop wouldn’t last too long. But for a full minute, Guan Shu almost wiped out half of the Aliens near the bar. After the halo disappeared, only a few beasts that had luckily escaped were left standing near him, which he promptly dispatched one by one.
Thousands of corpses lay near the bar, which greatly deterred the Mutant Beast in the distance. Like before, the Mutant Beast that had poisoned themselves by eating the corpses of their kin ceased their attack temporarily, looming in place.
Guan Shu looked up and nodded at Xu Huo in the sky before returning to the bar.
"There will soon come a third wave of attack." Chi Minghong’s Communicator was not disconnected, so Xu Huo could also hear their conversation outside. "I’ve used more than half of my applicable Props, and if there’s another beastly charge at the bar, I’ll have to withdraw my Props."
Props have a limit to endurance; they cannot be used indefinitely.
"What do we do then?" People in District 002 immediately panicked, "If you leave us here, we’d have only a one-way ticket to death!"
"I don’t want to be eaten alive by Aliens! Knowing it would end up like this, I’d rather have died from the fall!"
"...If we fall into a pile of Aliens, we won’t even have a chance to kill ourselves..."
...
The atmosphere of fear turned into despair, and someone actually attempted suicide again. Chi Minghong quickly stopped them, "Don’t rush to conclusions, struggle a bit more. My friend has gone out to find a way, maybe there’s a safe area away from the Aliens!"
"How could there possibly be any safe zones in this godforsaken place!" someone roared uncontrollably, "Are you trying to use us to buy time so you can escape?"
Chi Minghong wasn’t the least bit indirect. He kicked the man flying out and said sternly, "If we had left earlier because of you people, we would’ve been long gone, and we’ve put up with you dragging us down. Now you also have the face to turn around and pick a quarrel with us. If you don’t want to live, just say so, I can accommodate you!"
Her firmness made others fall in line.
At this time, Xu Huo had already passed through the opposite direction of the forest and relayed the message through the Communicator.
"Unfortunately, there are still no signs of human activity ahead, but it’s less rainy over there, and the vegetation looks much better than the plants in the forest. Maybe we can find something to eat."
So far, they had not found any animals that looked even remotely normal and might be edible other than the Mutant Beast. If they couldn’t find any, they would have to consider slaughtering a couple of Aliens to eat.
Aliens generally carry toxins—just vary in strength. Chronic poisoning is better than starving to death.
"That’s good, it’s not completely desert." Guan Shu breathed a sigh of relief. They had tested the plants in the forest and found they all contained trace toxins, but the device couldn’t determine exactly what kind. It would be troublesome if they actually did get chronic poisoning. If there were other plants growing elsewhere, it would indicate that most of the soil was not toxic and wouldn’t kill off species on the ground, so there was a high chance the water in rivers and streams could be drinkable.
"How are we going to get there now?" Zhou Yuanzhu licked her lips and pulled a piece of biscuit from her pocket, stuffing it into her mouth.
"Give me one," Ruan Qiyuan said.
Zhou Yuanzhu gave him a puzzled look but handed over the biscuit anyway, "Your food has run out?"
"It’s not filling enough," Ruan Qiyuan replied tersely.
"I, I’m also hungry, could you... maybe share a bit..." A young woman hesitantly approached him.
Ruan Qiyuan immediately stepped back, then tossed the pocket containing two more pieces of biscuit to her. The woman thanked him while picking them up. Just as she was about to put one in her mouth, a hand suddenly reached out from beside her and snatched it, leaving only a little of the already scant biscuits. Before she could even try to grab it back, the perpetrator shoved the biscuit into their mouth, while someone else tried to snatch what was in her hand.
Several people fought over a bit of biscuit, losing all sense of their earlier unity, and even a child trying to pick up fallen crumbs was kicked away...
Something was clearly wrong.
"The rain must be the problem." Xu Huo said to Chi Minghong, "Most people got soaked when they came down."
Including the infant Tan Qi was holding.
"Are you sure it’s the rain?" Guan Shu asked through the Communicator, "We’ve tested both the rain and the air."
"The child I brought put on a protective suit before descending, and so far, he has not experienced a particular hunger." If Xu Huo is considered a special case as a perfect Evolver, then Tan Qi should be the same as the people in District 002. He has been without issues, and the difference in between is the rain.
"But that doesn’t mean not getting drenched is absolutely safe," Xu Huo said. "Rain is part of the water cycle. If there’s something wrong with the rain, it means that other sources of water, including plants, might be problematic too. It’s not about toxicity; these things could provoke an insatiable hunger in people."
So far, they’re just in the hungry stage, but any Player has gone through the initial assessment, and that soul-deep hunger before the assessment isn’t something ordinary food can relieve. If a little biscuit can hold back the hunger now, who knows what could happen later?
"Gluttony is also a characteristic of the Aliens."
The Players have good hearing, so Zhou Yuanzhu and the others heard it all and understood what Xu Huo meant: This is a high-risk instance, the likelihood of ordinary Evolvers becoming Players is very slim, the most likely scenario is these people will all turn into Aliens!
