Chapter 1066: Hunger
Chapter 1066: Chapter 1066: Hunger
The amount of black rain varies not only between large areas but also within this cracked-soil region, with those places closer to the low hills experiencing denser rainfall.
The center of these low hills shows evidence of past eruptions; they are hollow inside, and from a distance, they resemble several volcanoes. However, upon closer inspection, these hills are not like typical volcanoes. Their main composition is not volcanic rock but a substance somewhat similar to soil.
Xu Huo used a tool to dig a bit and found that the low hills were not as solid as expected. Instead, the interior was loose, like overturned fine soil. It required little effort to pry apart, disintegrating upon a light pinch, much like the black filaments mixed in with the rain, dissolving in hand.
The so-called "low hills" were not real hills, but were large conical mounds formed from the accumulation of this black filamentous substance.
However, the central vents of these hills were not sealed, showing that the substance was still being ejected, although it lacked the characteristics of volcanic ash or plant combustion residue; strangely, it could fall with the rain from the sky...
"It seems there are quite a few such hills," remarked Xu Huo as he reached the mouth of a low hill and threw a stone down, yet no sound echoed back for a long time.
The absence of sound reaching the ground was ominous and discouraged him from descending to have a look.
The surrounding area was a vast expanse of cracked soil, lacking any trace of human presence, one could not help but wonder if there was an end to this place.
"He seems to be hungry," Tan Qi suddenly said. "The pacifier has been bitten through."
"That shouldn’t be the case," Xu Huo replied as he set the two children down. The pacifier was purchased from the replacement prop storage in his prop inventory. Although it was only a Level E Prop, it was still a prop and should not have been bitten through by a newborn.
Tan Qi reached into the baby’s protective cover, took out the pacifier, and lifted it up to show several distinct bite marks.
"You get what you pay for," mumbled Xu Huo, without any ready-to-eat baby food. He handed Tan Qi a bag of cookies, instructing him to crush them into crumbs and feed them to the infant.
After feeding the baby, Tan Qi consumed the remaining cookies himself, even licking his fingers clean.
"How will we leave when the time comes?" He turned and asked Xu Huo. "I can’t take the player train."
Tan Qi was not an Evolver and couldn’t board the train.
"I’ve bought you a non-player ticket in advance," Xu Huo said, sweating underneath his clothes. After a brief word, he took them on their way again, but this time not towards the cracked-soil area. Instead, he planned to check out the opposite side of the grove.
Unexpectedly, as he approached the grove again, the bar that should have been in the middle of the woods had been chased out by a Different Species Group. Inappropriate as it was, the previously intact establishment had now become a large rolling structure, pushed by the herd towards a nearby cliff edge.
The original shape of the bar was close to spherical, and it was already showing signs of damage on the outer edges. Shouts could be heard from inside, yet no one emerged.
Xu Huo took out the communicator to contact Chi Minghong; she was probably so dizzy that she vomited before speaking.
"Are you guys not coming out yet?" Xu Huo frowned, "There’s a cliff ahead."
"We don’t... want to stay, but," accompanied by the clattering sounds, Chi Minghong said, "We need to wait for the right moment..."
Just then, several super-sized mutant beasts from the different species group suddenly exploded, with the powerful flames killing all mutant beasts within a ten-meter radius, and the area was instantly filled with the lamentations of the different species.
And that wasn’t the end of it; the bombs must have been planted on the different species in advance, as some mutant beasts near the bar exploded too, and the toxic debris that scattered killed another mutant beast in a matter of seconds from impact to succumbing to the poison.
This indeed had a good effect; some of the mutant beasts, fearful of the power of the explosives, hesitated to approach. The rotating bar finally stopped and, with the players’ combined effort, was turned back onto the ground, though it was now upside down.
Chi Minghong found a moment to catch his breath and quickly replied to Xu Huo, "I don’t think the bar will last much longer. Do you see any relatively safe places out there?"
"Below the cliff is a high-temperature zone, the ground is parched, and not a blade of grass grows," said Xu Huo. "I turned back because I need to find another way out."
"Then we’re done for." Chi Minghong wailed, found time to discuss with Guan Shu and others, and then said, "Why don’t we roll back?"
"It’s too late!" Guan Shu bellowed, and then he, You Xuewen, and Lin Qiao left the bar through the windows, one after another, to kill three super-sized aliens charging from different directions!
Because of different evolutionary traits, some super-sized aliens grew shells, others scales. However, those with hard skin usually lacked speed, and those lacking defensive power needed to be more agile - but this so-called lack is only relative, and for the average player, even the "less agile" super-sized aliens are frighteningly fast.
Aside from Guan Shu who killed a super-sized alien with one blow, You Xuewen and Lin Qiao weren’t successful. Both aimed for the alien’s throat with sharp weapons, but the former missed and took a frontal hit with his defense prop, while the latter was struck by the tail of an alien, flung about ten meters away. Had he not defended himself in time, he would probably have had his neck bitten off by the pouncing alien!
Surrounded by different species, You Xuewen and the others quickly retreated to the bar after their unsuccessful attack. But then one of the super-sized aliens furiously sliced three smaller ones in half with its claws and let out a long roar.
The roar made the other different species lower their bodies in a submissive posture, and then quickly moved aside, giving way to a stampede of gigantic rhinoceroses that were coming from behind - in reality, these mutant beasts had gone beyond the category of rhinoceroses. They grew horns on their heads, each about five to six meters long, evolved very sharp teeth, and their hooves grew thick armor. Every step they took left a deep footprint in the exposed rocks beneath them, and some smaller aliens that accidentally got caught in their path were trampled into mincemeat in a matter of seconds!
It was this group of different species that, driven by the super-sized aliens, madly charged towards the bar, and even managed to lift the bar off the ground with their combined strength!
"Ah!!!" Two people fell out of the windows as the bar was flipped, landing right in front of the leading rhinoceros.
"Grab it!" A rope prop flew out of a window, catching the two, but unfortunately, as they were pulled back, they were bitten by the rhinoceros - one had its pelvis crushed by a rhinoceros lifting its head, and the whole hip and thigh were chewed off, with the contents of the abdomen spilling out... while another was bitten by the legs and torn in half alive!
The two weren’t dead yet, but the rope couldn’t hold them either. The remaining body parts slipped from mid-air, and before hitting the ground, the following different species immediately tore them apart, leaving not even a shred of remains.
