Chapter 1049: Chapter 1049: Offensive and Defensive Zhan

Chi Minghong laughed heartily, but before the laughter ended, a large net suddenly engulfed them, and they had no choice but to abandon the car and flee!

Xu Huo climbed onto the rooftop, while Chi Minghong, hit by a prop, landed on the balconies of the lower floors.

With one high and one low, they dodged the drones’ shots as they raced towards the New Xiangyang Energy Plant. As more people joined the pursuit, Xu Huo contemplated his escape, but suddenly, a deafening explosion came from diagonally ahead. The shockwave, spreading out, shattered the nearby residential windows, and the immense heatwave scorched every inch of air nearby, unavoidable even on the rooftop!

The loud sound attracted the attention of most of the players present. However, upon looking back, the explosion site did not spout flames but continued to emit blue-black smoke!

Within three seconds, the city’s alarms sounded, piercing through the air. Robots scattered throughout the city began to cyclically announce: "Level D poisonous gas leak event, residents are advised to stay indoors and wear their gas masks while waiting for further government directives. Before that, please do not move around unnecessarily, thank you for your cooperation."

Xu Huo noticed that the level of the gas leak announced by robots varied by location, with higher levels closer to the explosion site, which was near the New Xiangyang Energy Plant.

It’s still unclear whether the energy plant exploded, but a significant number of people, including players, surged from that vicinity.

The streets turned chaotic, and ordinary citizens, informed by robots to stay indoors, uncontrollably rushed to distant locations.

"Looks like the released gas is dangerous," Chi Minghong caught up with him, "Still going?"

"With protective suits, it shouldn’t be a big problem," Xu Huo handed her an injector, "An exclusively concocted antitoxin, useful when needed."

Chi Minghong had already changed into a protective suit, and through the gas mask, she gave him a thumbs up, and then the two headed towards the energy plant.

Other nearby players also moved towards the plant, but according to emergency measures of District 002, they were not the primary rescue force, so they didn’t head directly to the explosion site but worked with robots on the periphery to manage the poison gas.

However, the blast wave had carried the gas too far, and whether the robots were absorbing or using other materials to bind the gas, it was impossible to deal with the poison in a short time. Over time, people on the streets began to fall unconscious from poisoning.

The poison wasn’t potent enough to cause contact poisoning, but the situation was exacerbated by some wearing their gas masks improperly or others looting from those with damaged masks.

Once people started falling on the streets, others watching became panicked, and those in the areas notified of the Level D gas leak also poured out onto the streets—today, in alignment with martial law, civilian flying devices were locked down by the government, so they had to leave on foot.

Many people gathered on the streets, and even players couldn’t manage the crowd, so the focus of the nearby players quickly shifted from chasing members of the Holy Sword Society and players from other districts to evacuating the crowd and providing first aid to the injured.

Xu Huo and Chi Minghong also successfully escaped.

It was only when they arrived at the New Xiangyang Energy Plant that they realized the explosion had occurred next to a development company near the energy plant. After the poison gas leaked, the most affected was the energy plant, which explained why so many players had come out earlier.

Clearly, the explosion was man-made. Some players from other districts were engaged in a defense battle with players from District 002. Despite the explosion, the energy plant wasn’t destroyed; except for the outer buildings that were demolished. Using a huge oval pattern as a boundary, the main structure of the energy plant remained intact.

Xu Huo’s gaze shifted back and forth between the two fighting factions, finally focusing on a player standing next to the energy plant’s main gate wearing a grey coat, who appeared to be controlling the defense prop. Other than him, most players were participating in the battle, and the few who weren’t were scattered around protecting specific buildings.

As for the people from the Holy Sword Society, he had seen one of them earlier – the Rank-B player he had fought with, who was now wearing a red protective suit with two semi-transparent, football-like objects glowing beside him. Following his pointing, one of them emitted three swift whooshing sounds in quick succession, aggressively striking the defensive barrier outside the energy plant!

Unexpectedly, the collision did not make a loud noise. The defensive barrier acted like a soft convex surface; after the spherical prop struck it, several ripple-like flashes of white light appeared, seeming to dissipate the impact force. In fact, the prop ball was deeply embedded in the barrier and did not rebound immediately, but after two seconds, the white light on the barrier rebounded, as if gathering force for a counterattack, and then finally knocked the prop ball off!

However, the rebound seemed uncontrollable as the prop ball flew towards a building on the right, causing another loud boom!

"That explosion just now was probably caused by this thing," Chi Minghong tried to minimize his presence. "The people from the Holy Sword Society aren’t very effective. Such a defensive barrier and they can’t break through it. If above ground doesn’t work, why not go underground!"

Coincidentally, players from the Holy Sword Society thought similarly. While the player in the red protective suit was attacking from the front, another player controlled a Mechanical Pangolin, drilling a hole directly on the side of the mechanical plant and burrowing in.

A mechanical animal might not be effective in combat, but it’s a different story if it’s carrying a bag of explosives!

"Boom!!!" A flash of fire first appeared from the boundary of the defensive barrier. As several bursts of flames erupted, players who had come to suppress the explosion with their props were forced to retreat, and the massive outer defensive barrier swelled and formed layers of bulges under pressure, bursting open after a few seconds!

High-temperature heat waves burst forth, and nearby players instantly changed directions, teleporting to safer places to start the second round of combat. Meanwhile, the player in the red protective suit also led others into the energy plant!

Once people entered the energy plant, even if they restrained themselves, it was difficult to ensure the safety of the building, let alone the fact that one side had no intention of holding back.

As two flashes of silver light passed, the energy plant was cleaved from the middle and top, turning instantly into three segments. One of the segments slid directly to the ground along the sloped cut surface, creating a loud crash and also causing different degrees of depressions in the ground. From these depressions, one could barely see the specially made metal plates and narrow gaps that shouldn’t exist underground – these were the routes for underground pipelines!

Seizing the opportunity, Xu Huo and Chi Minghong darted into the collapsed building, pulverized a metal plate near the ground, threw a few smoke bombs inside, and shouted "Poison gas leak!" before jumping in.
