Chapter 1047: Chapter 1047: Today I am the Director
The other eight players in the building all felt it to be unbelievable. It was conceivable that players hired by major families might betray, but those who could enter the government hall, no matter what their character was, counted upwards and were truly from District 002, and most of them had families and mouths to feed. What good would it be for them to follow the Holy Sword Society?
The squad leader in charge called out the name of the informant, and after confirming there was no response, said to the others, "Liu Jin’s group and Fang Hai’s group, go back and take a look, and it would be best to hurry people along."
These two groups had already gone upstairs. Hearing the order, they turned back, but Liu Jin’s group hadn’t even reached the stairwell when they ran into "Xu Lin" coming face-to-face. The "Xu Lin" at this time was covered in wounds, looking anxious and staying on guard, "Don’t move, stay right there!"
Liu Jin’s pair did not immediately attack him but asked with concern what had happened.
"Zhang Chang took benefits from the Holy Sword Society and just tried to backstab me!"
"And where is he?" Liu Jin looked back.
"Of course, I killed him in self-defense!" "Xu Lin" said frustratedly: "Otherwise, do you think I could still walk out alive?"
Liu Jin and his companion exchanged glances, and the latter pulled out a double-ended open box prop and covered "Xu Lin" completely from head to toe, leaving only his head exposed. Liu Jin said, "Sorry, brother, we don’t have the final say in this. Let’s leave it to the inspection department to solve it. Play it cool and come with us..."
He was speaking while approaching "Xu Lin," but what he did not expect was that as soon as his hand touched the box, he got stabbed through the heart from behind!
"You..." He turned his head to look at his companion, but his companion was also looking at him as a sword pierced through their chest and abdomen.
The two of them looked at each other, falling down amidst shock and disbelief.
The imposter "Xu Lin," who was Xu Huo, dragged the two corpses into the adjacent room, then straightened his clothes and walked out.
Two more people had fallen silent; now, the two groups in front had no reason to turn back either.
Squad leader Zheng Cheng gestured to another group, and two of them went to the end of the corridor, intending to encircle from the other end’s elevator.
However, they did not find the target first but ran into the third group intending to go upstairs. After verifying each other’s identities, one of the members descending, Wang Youquan, said, "Why have you come up? What about the two others?"
"Weren’t they supposed to have gone up?" The two who were going upstairs were even more surprised, "Didn’t you hear their secret signal?"
Wang Youquan’s group looked at each other.
"That’s odd, we indeed heard the secret signal." One of the players going upstairs paused and said, "It could be some kind of voice-mimicking prop. Where’s the team leader?"
The group exchanged glances and realized something was wrong, quickly headed downstairs, only to find that not only had Zheng Cheng and another player disappeared, but the Communicator was also inoperable. Looking out the window, cars and people had vanished; not to mention sounds, there was a complete absence of light.
"Did we wander into an instance or are we seeing illusions?" Wang Youquan asked in confusion.
Another group of players said, "Is there such a thing as a random instance in Snow City? If it was a new instance being generated, the government would have received the news early on."
"We must have been interfered with. Everything we heard and saw is likely illusions..." Before finishing the sentence, a player from the same group slapped him crisply, explaining amidst his stunned gaze, "If it’s an illusion, this should wake you up, right?"
His companion was speechless, but a counter-slap would not benefit internal unity, so he raised his gun and sprayed bullets all around, saying, "Our strength dominates, no matter what tricks he has, it’s useless!"
However, after a round of bullets were spent, nothing made sense, instead, they heard screams and cries for help inside the residential buildings.
The player paused, "What’s going on, I avoided these people..."
Before he could finish, a regular person rushed out of a room and madly hacked at him with a kitchen knife, "I will kill you!"
One ordinary person isn’t much of a challenge, but what about dozens or hundreds with red eyes and frantic expressions?
"Affecting players isn’t easy, but influencing ordinary people is much simpler!" Wang Youquan said, "Let’s retreat first!"
"Run? Why run?" The shooting player said, "These people have already obstructed our progress. The government has clear orders, any citizens obstructing government players’ actions can be killed!"
As he said this, he was about to shoot, but his partner held him back, "Are you crazy? They are unarmed regular people!"
The shooting player looked at the group of Evolvers wielding kitchen knives in front of them and pushed his partner away, "Stop joking around!"
The unique sound of bullets firing continuously rang out as the surging crowd fell in rows, blood splattering onto the ground, walls, and even onto the faces of the players in a strange angle!
The shooting player seemed to enjoy the sensation of killing, continuously firing while laughing wildly until the last person fell in the corridor.
The three companions nearby all had uneasy expressions but said nothing. However, soon they couldn’t worry about that anymore because the dead started to stand up!
One by one, the corpses twisted their limbs and slowly stood up, their skin and facial features showing changes distinct from humans, with disgusting blood threads crawling over their skin, eyes turning dirty green, mouths open emitting nonsensical sounds, and foul drool flowing down their chins.
"Damn it!" The smile disappeared from the shooting player’s face, he said from the bottom of his heart, "Could it be that the government’s rumored experimentation project is real?"
The other three present didn’t ask for details because those risen corpses were already rushing at them!
Different from when they were alive, these ordinary people now had Alien-like speed. Very soon, the last to run, the shooting player, got his leg bitten by one.
"Get off!" The shooting player kicked it away, but quickly another one pounced at him. Props were ineffective against these corpses, let alone guns, and soon, he was held down by several corpses at the same time. Some bit into his shoulders, others into his waist and legs, with a force capable of tearing the flesh apart!
The shooting player screamed for help towards his companion, but Wang Youquan and his group had already run upstairs. His teammate from the same group was a step behind; hearing his call for help, he looked back, visibly hesitating!
"Help me!" The shooting player quickly said, "I can give you anything you want in return!"
His companion hesitated for a second but still turned back to help free him from the corpses’ entanglement, and then used a prop to successfully block the corpses at the stairwell entrance.
"We’ve only sealed off one stairwell entrance. These zombies will definitely come up from the others. We need to get out fast." The shooting player looked at his companion, "Brother, after we get out, you can pick any prop from me. I’ll remember this life-saving grace!"
The prop-formed barrier made banging sounds as if it was about to break, the teammate seemingly still frightened, glanced ahead and said, "What kind of experiment could turn corpses into monsters comparable to Aliens?"
