Chapter 1021: Chapter 1021: Paper Note Game
The picture book was just a normal children’s book, educational and full of interest.
"Lady seemed to have a childlike spirit," the Pierced Lip Player remarked.
"Maybe it’s because she wanted kids but couldn’t have any," Chi Minghong said. "But that’s nothing unusual."
"It’s so normal that it actually becomes strange," Ding Xiang added. "How many normal people do you see in District 002?"
Everyone involuntarily turned their gaze to the local player who after a pause said, "Almost everyone in Snow City has undergone psychological treatment, including children. This person named Jin Li lived nearly eighty years but never once saw a psychologist, even refusing the government’s free consultations."
"Did she not have psychological treatments even when she was being treated for her congenital disabilities?" Xu Huo asked.
The local player nodded, "Hospital records indicate that her psychological state was very sound, and the psychologists observed from the sidelines and concluded that she was already in an ideal state—resilient, optimistic, and requiring no further psychological intervention."
"That’s what’s strange about it," Zhou Yuanzhu barely held back a laugh. "A person being too mentally healthy is abnormal."
"Compared to her grandfather and father, she definitely was abnormal," the local player continued. "Besides, writing notes was a therapy method proposed by a well-known psychologist at the time, it used to be popular for venting personally and sharing with others, but it faded away after a while. Other than that, nothing else."
"Are there any relics of this old lady in the villa? There might be clues inside," the Spotted Player asked. "Since we can’t find the fourth note, we might as well check."
"I don’t think so," Chi Minghong said uncertainly: "Between yesterday and today, we’ve searched every room. If there were any, we’d have seen them. It’s more likely that the adoptive children who inherited the estate have already disposed of her belongings."
There isn’t a separate storage room in this villa; even the larger individual bathrooms had been converted into small rental units, and all rooms have records of being rented out. It would be difficult to preserve Jin Li’s relics.
"Not necessarily," the Muscular Man interjected: "Many rooms still have books; some were left by tenants who died and no one came to clear out their belongings. From what was left behind, it’s obvious there’s a distinct difference or irrelevance between the lifestyles of some tenants and the content of the books. Several rooms had the same type of books tucked deep inside the cabinets, rarely disturbed, while other types of frequently used books were left outside."
"One or two tenants bringing books they never use is one thing, but it’s impossible for most people living in this villa to do that."
"Those books were probably relics left by Jin Li, used by the adoptive couple."
"Should we move the books out?" Ambush Player eagerly suggested.
"Moving the books will take quite some time, it’s slow if done one person at a time," the Muscular Man glanced at Xu Huo, "But if everyone helps, maybe someone will take the opportunity to grab the notes."
"It won’t hurt to take a bit longer," Pierced Lip Player said. "Let’s do it the same way as before, moving one by one."
Would they waste time separating now?
No choice, everyone still agreed to this clumsy method.
By the time they had moved all the books, it was past midnight.
Apart from the likely relics from Jin Li, books from other tenants were mixed in too. The people followed the Muscled Man’s estimation, sorting out probable books and searching them one by one, still to no avail.
The trouble was, they themselves didn’t know what they were looking for.
"Most are novels," Zhou Yuanzhu said. "Suitable for all ages, nothing unusual there."
It was normal for three generations of Jin Li’s family, who all lived here, to have books for both children and adults.
Xu Huo had a detective novel in hand; one of the victims in the cases was disemboweled post-mortem. He flipped to the back and then switched a few books, finally finding a motivational novel about a character who was amputated after a car accident.
The content was exactly what corresponded with the two notes.
Even though adults could also produce such child-like drawings, most would favor them coming from a child’s hand, especially given the game’s setting. Xu Huo believed the drawings on the notes should correspond to Jin Li’s childhood, she liked using notes to communicate, probably with her family members. If Jin Li’s mental health was really as sound as claimed, then her family must have invested a lot of effort into it because of her physical disabilities, using notes to play games wasn’t odd.
If this was a "match picture to book" game, Jin Li would likely take the role of setting questions, which would accommodate both her physical and mental health, making the simple and childlike drawing understandable.
This instance could be based on that game, only "match picture to book" turned into "match picture to person".
Match picture to person... The notes had some spooky drawings and only sequence numbers left.
Xu Huo looked at the notes labeled "3" and "13" on the table. The third female Player who came had died, and he wasn’t a dungeon player, temporarily unable to confirm his guess.
"Huh?" Zhou Yuanzhu came over, holding the detective novel and also flipping through the book Xu Huo just put down, "The book has the same content as the notes!"
Chi Minghong and Ambush Player immediately looked over, confirming before the former said, "The notes wouldn’t correspond to these books, would they?
Ambush Player paused, grabbing the book corresponding to the note content he had, and put it down a few seconds later.
The others couldn’t help but snicker a little.
"If it’s that easy to clear the game, would this still be a Rank-C instance?" Pierced Lip Player said.
"Still no gain," Liang Zong pushed away the books piled in front of him, "This effort is meaningless."
"At least one thing is certain," Xu Huo said. "That is, even if you fulfill the content of the notes, you can’t clear the instance."
"That might relate to the name of the instance," Chi Minghong suggested. "Maybe players only need that last note to clear?"
Having obtained the notes, and neither situation after obtaining them allowing to clear the game, there was still one more scenario—being counter-killed after getting the notes.
Counter-kills could happen in two ways, either the numerical player of the notes kills or another player does.
Eliminating the case where the long-haired female Player was killed by a numerical player would bring Xu Huo’s speculation closer.
His gaze swiftly swept over the local player, Pierced Lip Player, Spotted Player, and Chi Minghong, he reminded, "It’s already past midnight."
