Chapter 1016: Your Bad Luck
Chapter 1016: Chapter 1016: Your Bad Luck
Xu Huo watched the Players following his suggestion and felt that the effect of "Charm of the Narrator" characteristic was quite remarkable. Even those Players with lip piercings who intended to reduce the competition could be persuaded by a very simple reason—a reason normally lacking in persuasiveness and insufficient to make over a dozen Players step back—unexpectedly simple, and seamlessly so.
However, everyone guessed that the little notes might appear intermittently, so the next course of action was of course to search room by room.
This time everyone moved together, each person ensuring they were watched by at least two pairs of eyes, yet unexpectedly, they found nothing from the first to the fifth floor.
"Could it be that the notes only appear when Players are alone?" Xu Huo, who had seen a Player reading old magazines when he arrived, said, "If everyone stays together and the notes never appear, then wouldn’t nobody be able to pass the level?"
"How could that be?" Xu Huo smiled, "Everyone has to return to their rooms at night, what if it’s precisely targeted to the Player’s rooms?"
The man fell silent.
Since they couldn’t find the notes, the Players naturally wouldn’t stay together. Since it might appear in their own rooms anyway, they’d just leave it to luck.
Xu Huo also went downstairs. Though he wasn’t a Ticket Player, he had to follow the instance’s rules upon entering, and he could also potentially become a target for other Players.
"We were just eating together earlier, who would have thought that she would die so quickly." Chi Minghong commented, then added, "But those who got the notes really lack guts, only daring to target the weak."
Xu Huo glanced back at her, "Not necessarily so."
"What did you notice?" Chi Minghong became interested.
"The female Player who died earlier, wasn’t she testing you while cooking?" said Xu Huo.
"Testing?" Chi Minghong recalled, "She only mentioned two people, do you mean she got the note and was choosing between those two as her target?"
"Not necessarily," Xu Huo said. "She probably arrived after you, right?"
Chi Minghong nodded, "There were only four people when I arrived."
"That Player who had a lip piercing, the man with facial spots who talked to you, and the female Player who died last night."
The man with facial spots was the one Xu Huo saw reading old magazines.
"She only talked to you during the conversation, clearly thinking that you were the only one who knew the information she sought," Xu Huo said. "Players don’t know each other, she fabricated the news that the Players were a pair subtly, asking only about those who arrived before you, who were also before her..."
"She was confirming the order Players arrived at the villa!" Chi Minghong reacted quickly. "She wouldn’t know about those who came before her, but she knew about those who came after."
"But what use is knowing that?"
"It might be related to the content of the notes," Xu Huo speculated. "Perhaps the note is a death list, ordered by when they entered the villa."
"Does that mean the person who killed her was among the three Players who arrived before me?" Chi Minghong paused, then said, "But that’s not right, if it’s based on order, the first to die shouldn’t have been the woman from last night. When I arrived, she was just coming down from upstairs, later than the other three."
"There might be other possibilities, but at least we can be sure the content of the notes is related to the order of Players entering," said Xu Huo, not stating openly that the death of the long-haired female Player was different from the one who died last night. If the killer was the person who got the note, her body should have been arranged as a "sacrifice", but the sacrificial scene was staged.
The Player wearing the hat wasn’t the one who killed her, but whether he was the first to act last night is unclear.
It could also be simply stirring the waters.
"Going in order is fine too," Chi Minghong counted on her fingers, "At least I’m in the front, it’s too boring waiting without knowing anything."
"Don’t worry, everyone will get a turn, whether they are killing or being killed," Xu Huo smiled slightly, "Why the rush?"
However, he didn’t expect someone to come so quickly; he had only returned to his room for half an hour when someone threw a Prop through the window—seeing a sphere that emitted an unknown gas fall to the ground, he covered his face with a gas mask, then moved to the window’s side, and directly dragged the person who climbed in into the room!
Both sides used the Muffler Artefact, so not a sound was made when the person entered. The opponent, well-prepared, naturally anticipated the possibility of the narcotic failing, raised his hand, and a cylindrical Prop wrapped around Xu Huo’s arm.
Using "Magic Escape" to shed the Prop, then using "Unassailable Territory" to block the opponent’s two attacks, Xu Huo moved through space to his rear, grabbed the raised right hand of the opponent, and directly twisted it, hearing a scream. He quickly retracted his hand and backed off, maintaining a certain distance and pulling out "Compulsory Levitation."
The opposing Player, cradling his injured right hand, threw a handful of knife blades into the air with his left hand. Under the enhancement of Characteristics, the blades swirled around Xu Huo like a storm—"Unassailable Territory" had a duration of three seconds, and reactivating it would leave a gap, so he used "Three Hundred Sixty Defenses" as an aid and struck the encroaching person with "Divine Slap!"
The opponent used a Prop to lessen the impact but was still knocked back three or four meters, seemingly realizing how tough Xu Huo was, as he single-handedly flung out a chain, "Hell’s Prison!"
As his words fell, the room spawned dozens of chains, rising from the ground, slanting upward, connecting to the ceiling, quickly blocking Xu Huo’s movements not only physically but also enacting a strange force that uncontrollably bent his limbs under the winding chains.
Xu Huo’s gaze darkened, but he chose not to destroy the Prop. After confirming "Magic Escape" was useless, he used "Unassailable Territory" to protect his body, allowing the opponent to attack.
The opposing Player, the one who rummaged through the living room without much conversation, realizing he couldn’t breach Xu Huo’s defenses, began to retreat.
But at that moment, Xu Huo spoke, "Don’t worry, there won’t be a third person who knows what happened here."
The male Player’s eyebrows furrowed, and he turned to run towards the window. However, the window, originally clear of any obstruction, seemed to be welded shut by an invisible wall, which, by reaction, bounced him back instead!
Realizing the window was impregnable, he turned towards the door, but upon opening it, he found himself still in the same room, where another trapped Xu Huo was present!
"What’s going on..." he looked back and forth in shock, then disbelievingly rushed into the next room. Upon opening the door, however, it was the same room!
"This is an illusion!" The male Player gritted his teeth and summoned his Prop at every corner of the room, but the room was like an indestructible space, not only failing to break out, but he couldn’t even leave a mark on the walls:
"Nice way to feign weakness and then strike back. You’ve got me fooled!"
