Chapter 1012: Doctor’s Reward
Chapter 1012: Chapter 1012: Doctor’s Reward
Ten minutes of blank time, a mysterious chamber he clearly entered yet has no memory of, observing the signs of recent activity on the table, Xu Huo realized that it wasn’t just his perception that was problematic; his entire memory had been wiped clean. Had he not noticed something was off when he was leaving, he would likely have dismissed this visit as fruitless and cast it aside from his thoughts!
However, he was now awake.
This meant that once the prop arranged in this room was seen through, it would be useless.
He took out the detection prop to search inside and outside the chamber, but unexpectedly, he only found one Level D Item.
A Level D Item definitely couldn’t erase a person’s memory, yet there wasn’t a second prop present. A myriad of possibilities such as one-time props, special spaces, and special characteristics flashed through Xu Huo’s mind, but without a definite conclusion, he had to check the documents in the chamber again.
Luo Changren hadn’t lied; the chamber was indeed related to an investigation involving Dr. Wu and had a schedule pinned on the wall, marking the exact times and locations Dr. Wu had appeared. These records trace back to twenty years ago and as recent as five years ago.
Xu Huo took photos and removed all the blueprints, then moved to the desk in the chamber. He gathered the magazines, clippings, empty notebooks, and ink from the drawers into his luggage hold. Finally, he picked up that Level D prop box.
This box wasn’t much of a prop and bore no traps, but its contents genuinely surprised him—a P2S injection lay on a cushion of red velvet.
It wasn’t that he could identify the drug by himself; the syringe was blatantly labeled, accompanied by another label which read:
"Reward."
A surge of uncontrollable anger rushed through him, Xu Huo abruptly slammed the box shut, his breathing grew ragged. His hands clenched and unclenched, taking half a minute to calm down.
Reopening the box, he removed the label. The handwriting was completely different from the notes he had packed away, yet strangely familiar. Through the handwriting, it seemed his fragmented memories overlapped—he had seen this handwriting before, witnessed the person forming each stroke meticulously on paper. A dream-like scene, uncertain whether it was real or not, emerged:
A doctor in a white coat patted his head, while he, gazing at the signature on the paper, said with a smile, "I’ve made progress today, you said if I keep it up for ten days straight, I could see my parents."
"Can I see them tomorrow, Dr. Zhang?"
Dr. Zhang.
Xu Huo looked gloomily at the label in his hand, that doctor who had once "taught" him at the Seventeenth Hospital was surnamed Zhang.
Triggering this point, the memory fragments about this person quickly became clear in his mind. All the children called him Dr. Zhang, the nurses in the hospital were willing to cover up his "special treatments" which were obviously too long, even the doctors who had disagreements with him the day before would forget the unpleasantness and show him friendliness without grudges the next day.
The blurry faces from his dreams or mental disturbances became clearer:
A face looking down on him from above, a face meticulously performing all sorts of expressions as if controlled by a machine, black pupils revealing no emotions, watching everyone and everything as if observing dust boiling in the air—trivial as life and death.
But that was it.
The memories Xu Huo had recovered had the most profound impression of Dr. Zhang’s appearance, meanwhile, details like training, taking medication, and the daily life in the hospital were rather vague. Besides potential meddling by the parties involved, natural forgetting could play a role too; his memory ought to have improved over time with medication.
Dr. Zhang’s departure from the Seventeenth Hospital and the key matter of Xu Zhi’s death had not resurfaced in his mind yet.
Looking at the word "reward" as if mocking him, Xu Huo understood, though he had spent a few peaceful years in Zone 014, he had never truly escaped Dr. Zhang’s shadow. This chamber must have been prepared for individuals like him, who had undergone Dr. Zhang’s training. An ordinary player would leave unaware, just like on his first visit, perhaps even influenced to clean the room again—only those enhanced mentally could see the real secrets and obtain the box and the drug inside. The Perfect Potion was not merely a "reward," it suggested that Dr. Zhang might still be nurturing a perfect evolution of players!
What exactly does he want to do?
This was the first time Xu Huo had seriously pondered this question.
Using himself as an example, Dr. Zhang wasn’t able to completely control the growth trajectory of the children he selected. Like Chang Bei and Xiao Liang, some children had limited talent, issues with their minds—simply put, they were ticking time bombs and not easily manipulated subjects. Exerting so much effort in places not yet gamified to pick and train, the ultimate goal definitely wasn’t just to cultivate a few murderers.
The extensive span of time and broad scope involved had already surpassed ordinary persistence.
People persist in something usually because they have pinned their hopes on it, regardless if the content of the "hope" is good or bad, it generally represents desires they cannot attain or accomplish. Each time Dr. Zhang appeared, he was alone, having survived till now without being killed by his students, he most likely reached Super Player level— frank-speaking, there’s little within the gaming world that could confound them, unless it is to overthrow the gaming world—Dr. Zhang doesn’t seem like such a good person.
Maybe he has a particular obsession with transforming naturally brilliant children?
According to Luo Changren, Dr. Zhang had been in District 002 for a considerable time, and the laboratory he established there was once popular. What was he doing here during that period? Selecting new training subjects?
The harsh survival conditions in District 002 meant, undoubtedly, there would be no shortage of children with psychological issues. If he needed children like Xiao Liang, they wouldn’t be hard to find... or perhaps this time he was...
