Chapter 1011: Doctor Zhang’s Room

Chapter 1011: Chapter 1011: Doctor Zhang’s Room

Chi Minghong revealed two pieces of information: first, only one note would appear each day, and second, the note would appear only after midnight.

In an instance involving over a dozen players, having only one note appear per day seemed rather inefficient... Xu Huo turned to look at Chi Minghong.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" The other party looked at him suspiciously.

"Nothing." Xu Huo turned his head away and continued to search the other rooms.

Players who had arrived earlier had searched the rooms, leaving traces of rummaging and displacement; some of the more eye-catching rooms had even had their wallpaper stripped off.

"There are quite a few bloodstains on the walls." Xu Huo examined them for two seconds and observed, "The traces are quite peculiar."

Chi Minghong took a look too, "Looks like a duck, I hope that freak isn’t using blood to paint," he said.

Xu Huo smiled, "That’s highly unlikely." After all, the patterns didn’t look like ducks.

"Other rooms have them too." Chi Minghong, with his good memory, pointed out the rooms with bloodstains and roughly described their locations.

Rooms with fatalities were not specially renovated: noticeable spots were covered with wallpapers, while the floor was simply concealed with carpets. Even more preposterously, in two rooms, blood-stained carpets had not been washed but had been flipped over to be reused.

"The room directly above the main hall is the worst. There’re traces everywhere that haven’t been cleaned up — on the walls, the floor, and even under the beds," said Chi Minghong. "It doesn’t seem at all like a place for rent; no one could live here for three years. It feels somewhat sinister to me."

Xu Huo replied, "If the landlord or one of the tenants relishes killing or, in fact, is a red player, then the situation would make sense."

The rooms where traces were still visible had halved, circling irregular shapes that did not appear in a normal blood spatter pattern, nor were they consistent with how a red player fed.

It looked more like some ritual.

Given the circumstances in District 002, any type of psychopathic killer could emerge, which wasn’t completely unexpected.

When he and Chi Minghong came down from the fifth floor, the round-faced female player and the bespectacled male had also emerged from different directions. By then, two people were missing from the main hall on the first floor.

One was the eyebrow piercing player who had been in the hall since Xu Huo entered, and the other was a hat-wearing male player who came down from the upper floors later.

Xu Huo looked towards the talking players.

"...I’ve been teaching for five years." The man, who looked honest and non-aggressive, introduced himself: "My last name is Fan, and I’m a teacher in the game as well."

He was speaking to a female player sitting next to him. She wore a slit dress that accentuated her figure, and she looked quite attractive. She too had come down from upstairs later and appeared somewhat uninterested, but still responded to Teacher Fan, "You look quite young; I didn’t expect you to have five years of experience."

"I stayed at school after graduation; without the tempering of society, I appear younger," Teacher Fan said with a smile. "Miss Ding is so stunning. You must be a famous actress."

Miss Ding smiled lightly, "I’m not beautiful."

As she spoke, she leaned slightly forward, cradling her cheek in her right hand, "Have you not seen the beauty contestants from District 002? They all look like they’ve been genetically selected, flawless just judging by appearances."

"Even the men and women who walk on the streets of Snow City are quite good-looking. I’m curious, District 002 advocates natural childbearing, but why are the children born there so beautiful, as if they only take after the best attributes?"

There was only one player from District 002 present. Miss Ding’s words seemed provocative, but the other party merely glanced at her and then lowered their head to continue fiddling with a decorative vase they had taken from a corner display.

"It’s probably due to the environment," the long-haired female player remarked while looking into the mirror. "Maybe living in darkness year-round could have this effect. It’s a pity I’m not from District 002; I can’t endure being in the dark for a long time, otherwise, I would definitely try to see if I could become beautiful."

Miss Ding did not comment on her words. However, the bespectacled man who came last interjected, "Haven’t you ever investigated the situation in District 002? Being beautiful there is not necessarily a good thing."

The atmosphere grew silent; the few who had been chatting eagerly all averted their gaze in unison.

The bespectacled man felt a bit embarrassed by the abrupt quiet. Chi Minghong laughed and said, "That’s what you get for running your mouth."

Then there was another stretch of silence. Seeing it was nearly ten o’clock, Xu Huo said to Chi Minghong, "I’m going to find a room to rest a bit."

"Does it matter where you wait?" Chi Minghong decisively followed. "Let’s go together."

Xu Huo found a room on the first floor, which was the residence of Doctor Zhang that Luo Changren had written about.

Rooms on the first floor were generally bigger than those above, and Doctor Zhang had rented a small suite with a bedroom and a sizable study.

Information provided by Luo Changren indicated that Doctor Zhang had temporarily left District 002, and magazines with dates in the study confirmed that Doctor Zhang hadn’t returned since that departure.

The room was covered with a thin layer of dust. Aside from some fresh traces of movement, the walls and floor tiles were clean, with no signs of struggle or bloodstains left uncleaned.

This room was too clean.

Xu Huo walked around the rooms before returning to the entrance, grazing his fingers over scratches on the door lock, then closed the door again.

Doctor Zhang’s personal belongings were well arranged and, compared to some other unoccupied rooms, showed signs of regular cleaning. Someone must have taken care of this place until the villa was completely deserted.

With years having passed since his return, and none of the tenants staying longer than three years, it probably was not Doctor Zhang’s friends taking care of the place.

Traces of the old lock being picked indicated that, besides players, some professionals with unique skills had visited, yet the room remained tidy as if new. The landlord did not seem to be someone conscientious about contracts... unless someone regularly altered their appearance to return here, it meant there was something unusual about this room itself.

There was a secret room inside.

Xu Huo walked over to the wall behind the study, idly scanning the formulas about potion synthesis posted on it, and reached out his hand.

The moment his hand touched the wall, he suddenly blinked hard. For some reason, he retracted his hand and was about to leave.

However, as he turned around, he stopped, furrowed his brows, looked back at the wall and then at the time.

It had been fifteen minutes since he entered the room — far longer than he perceived. From entering to inspecting each room, it should have been no more than five minutes!

Was there a problem with the prop, or was his perception impaired?

Walking back to the wall, Xu Huo reached out his hand again but stopped halfway this time, opting instead to use a prop.

With Sword, he broke through the wall, and as hoped, he reached the secret room. But before stepping in, he saw a fresh set of footprints on the ground. The tread pattern was identical to the one he wore, "Gentleman’s Stance!"
