Journey to the West: Starting from Changing Sun Wukong’s fate
Chapter 96 - 96 96 Rather than be a high official you become a coachman

96: Chapter 96: Rather than be a high official, you become a coachman 96: Chapter 96: Rather than be a high official, you become a coachman In Sun Wukong’s view, a marginal figure like Pilgrim would soon be forgotten, and then he could peacefully cultivate in the celestial Court.

He would wait until he gained some strength before taking further action, but before that, he needed to be cautious to avoid getting inadvertently involved in troubles.

As Sun Wukong’s words spread, Taibai Jinxing couldn’t help but show surprise, and it was difficult to persuade him, especially since what Sun Wukong said wasn’t without reason.

Who starts off in heaven with a high-ranking position?

Sun Wukong was simply considerate of his superiors.

Could they say that Sun Wukong did not know what was good for him, choosing a minor position over a high-ranking one?

Li Jing stood by, puffing his beard and glaring.

If Sun Wukong had been under his command, things would have been much easier, but to see him choosing such a minor position made Li Jing think him foolish and ignorant.

Lacking any ambition.

The Jade Emperor offered you a high position and you refused, I offered you a generalship and you refused that too.

With such temperament, Li Jing naturally had no good feelings towards Sun Wukong.

“How ignorant, to be offered a high position and refuse, insisting on being a coachman, truly a piece of uncarvable wood!”

Li Jing curled his lip, scoffing disdainfully.

His words laced with contempt.

“Celestial King Li, what do you mean by that?

Old Sun’s choices have gone unquestioned by His Majesty, yet you interfere; could it be that you don’t regard the Emperor with respect?

Or do you have a complaint against Old Sun?

If that’s the case, we might as well have a grand battle right here before His Majesty!”

Upon hearing Li Jing mock him, Sun Wukong snorted coldly and glared back fiercely, not showing any weakness and involving the Jade Emperor in the process.

His argument was logical and justified.

He effectively accused Li Jing of disrespecting the Emperor.

And he did not back down from challenging to a fight.

Although Sun Wukong was cautious, even a statue made of clay has a three-point temper, and even more so for Sun Wukong.

While cautious, once Sun Wukong had the upper hand, he certainly would not show timidity.

Now it was Li Jing showing disrespect to the Emperor, and Sun Wukong would act on behalf of the Jade Emperor—surely the Emperor would not take Li Jing’s side in this matter.

At worst, he would remain neutral.

With the Jade Emperor presiding, no powerful figure would act for Li Jing’s sake.

After all, Li Jing’s cultivation level was only that of a Great Luo Golden Immortal.

And Sun Wukong was at the early peak of the Great Luo Golden Immortal; as long as no other great power intervened, he had more than enough strength to deal with him.

“Enough, let the matter rest here!”

Just as the tension escalated, the Jade Emperor’s cool voice echoed through the area.

Devoid of any mundanity, as soon as the Emperor spoke, the deities of the celestial Court instantly quieted down.

“Alright, Taibai Jinxing, since Sun Wukong has decided to take up the position of Pilgrim, you will handle this.

Take Sun Wukong to officially assume his post at the Imperial Horse Censor!”

Upon hearing the Jade Emperor’s decree, Taibai Jinxing shuddered and quickly bowed to His Majesty, then respectfully responded, “I shall heed the Emperor’s command!”

He then led Sun Wukong to take up the post at the Imperial Horse Censor.

After Taibai Jinxing had taken Sun Wukong away, Li Jing frowned and stepped forward, addressing the Jade Emperor, “Your Majesty, we of the celestial Court are supreme, how can we allow a demon monkey to freely choose his divine position!”

“Celestial King Li, does his appointment require your agreement?”

Upon hearing this, the Jade Emperor’s voice turned icy, and an immense invisible aura surged around him, bearing down on Li Jing like the weight of countless divine mountains.

Boom!

Under that force, Li Jing was directly suppressed inside the Ninth celestial Palace, his body pinned to the floor.

Li Jing’s face turned pale.

As the Jade Emperor showed his anger, those Deities of the celestial Court close to Buddhism who had thought to intercede fell silent!

Although the Emperor’s authority had been curbed and he held little real power,

He was still not someone these Orthodox Deities could afford to offend.

The Emperor still controlled some powers of life and death.

“Li Jing, this place is the celestial Court, not for you to point fingers.

This is not Mount Meru; do not overstep!

Otherwise, do not blame me for not showing your master any courtesy!”

With those words, the Jade Emperor’s figure vanished from the Ninth celestial Palace in an instant.

“…”

Witnessing the scene, those Deities of the celestial Court close to Buddhism shuddered.

The Jade Emperor’s sudden outburst was a stark warning to them.

Now that Sun Wukong had just ascended to the celestial Court and the Jade Emperor had stormed off in a rage,

This was not a good sign for the Emperor.

“Celestial King Li, this is still the celestial Court; you should be more careful!”

Following the departure of the Emperor, Li Jing regained his freedom and slowly stood up.

Meanwhile, Zhang Daoling and others from the Daoist Sect couldn’t help but show looks of mockery as they walked past the disheveled Li Jing.

They obviously wouldn’t offer him a helping hand.

As people from the Three Teachings departed, Wen Zhong among others also strode away without a second glance at Li Jing.

For those of the Three Teachings, the Cutting Teachings Sect held the least interest in the Journey to the West; they did not wish to get involved.

“Celestial King Li, are you alright?”

Only after many high-ranking deities of the celestial Court had left did some of Li Jing’s friends help him to his feet.

As for Nezha, he had already left; he had no interest in getting too close to Li Jing.

“Hmph!”

Li Jing snorted coldly, shaking off several military generals’ hands.

Then a trace of fresh blood also flowed from the corner of his mouth.

This time, the Jade Emperor intended only to mete out a warning punishment, not to take Li Jing’s life directly through it.

But even so, it wasn’t something that Li Jing could withstand.

After this strike, it was likely that he would need to go into seclusion for some time to fully recover.

What happened inside the Ninth celestial Palace was, of course, unknown to Sun Wukong.

He was currently following Taibai Jinxing out of the Ninth celestial Palace and heading towards the Imperial Horse Censor of the celestial Court.

Upon seeing the arrival of such a high deity as Taibai Jinxing, all the Constables, Registrars, and other minor deities of the Imperial Horse Censor came out to kneel and welcome him.

They couldn’t help but feel a little panicked, for it had been a long time since a deity of such rank had come to them.

After all, this was always a marginal area in the celestial Court, overseeing tasks that didn’t even rank on the official scale, effectively considered quite unimportant.

How could there be a visit from a high-ranking celestial official, moreover, one who was a close aide to the Jade Emperor like Taibai Jinxing?

They couldn’t comprehend it yet, but they could sense that today’s affair seemed to be out of the ordinary, so they hurried to bow and greet him with great respect.

“These are the lands under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Horse Censor Pilgrim; the Great King can personally select a few to accompany you to inspect the horses!”

Taibai Jinxing said, gesturing to the minor officials before them.

Sun Wukong nodded; although he had never been to the celestial Court, having been a Great King for so many years, he found such matters easy to handle.

Without ado, he selected the Registrar, Supervisor Assistant, Deputy Supervisor, and others to accompany him and Taibai Jinxing while he checked the horse feed—over a thousand Celestial Horses.

Sun Wukong reviewed the ledgers, counted the horses, and then ordered the celestial strongmen following him to wash them, give them water, and tie them with straw—clearly, he got the hang of it very easily.

Taibai Jinxing watched as Sun Wukong took his work seriously from the beginning, which made him frown slightly.

He had thought that Sun Wukong proposing to take up the position of Imperial Horse Censor Pilgrim was only a way to shirk responsibility, but he hadn’t expected him to be so earnest.

And he had started doing the work of the Pilgrim almost immediately upon his arrival.

“Great King, won’t you reconsider another divine position?

With your qualifications, taking up this minor role of Pilgrim really seems beneath you!”

Taibai Jinxing could not help but try to persuade him.

Such a small position was not something a Great King would usually agree to take.

Every Great Demon King thinks highly of themselves; even in ascending to heaven, they’d want a position with high status.

Otherwise, it would be beneath their dignity.

But here was Sun Wukong, willing to take on the minor role of Pilgrim.

“Thanks for your kind intentions, Star Lord.

Being new to the celestial Court, I’m not suited to be a high official, lest it leads to dissatisfaction among others.

Starting out as the Imperial Horse Censor Pilgrim is more prudent!”

Sun Wukong grinned as he spoke.

Hearing Sun Wukong’s words, Taibai Jinxing thought it quite in line with Sun Wukong’s cautious nature.

However, Taibai Jinxing didn’t shy away from discussing this with Sun Wukong in the presence of the nearby minor officials.

The Constables, overhearing, couldn’t help but be startled.

What did he mean by “beneath him” and “not suited to be a high official”?

Was there actually someone who voluntarily accepted such a low-ranking position?

Both Constables and other minor officials there were dumbfounded.

Was there really someone who didn’t want to be a high-ranking official, preferring instead to take a minor position like the Pilgrim?

However, as Taibai Jinxing was present, they naturally dared not ask too much, lest they incur his displeasure.

“Ah, if the Great King insists, I won’t urge you further.

I just hope the Great King takes care,”

Seeing Sun Wukong’s determination, Taibai Jinxing sighed, smiled bitterly, and said no more.

Then he stepped on the Auspicious Clouds, which lifted him away towards the direction of the Jade Emperor.

After Taibai Jinxing left, only Sun Wukong and two Duty Officers of the Imperial Horse Censor remained.

Seeing that Sun Wukong was fairly polite and didn’t seem to lord his position over others, they couldn’t help but speak up: “Sir, the two of us have a question we’d like to ask, if you’d be so kind as to enlighten us?”

As soon as they spoke, the two Constables regretted it, for this sir had only just taken up his appointment, and here they were, inquiring about this and that without proper deference.

If they angered their superior, they might not be safe!

“No matter, go ahead and ask your question!”

Sun Wukong showed no intention of bullying the weak.

Speaking casually, he sat in the seat of the Pilgrim, flipping through the affairs of the Imperial Horse Censor, but while the minor officials weren’t paying attention, he had already emitted his Divine Sense to survey the surroundings, cautious not to be observed unknowingly.

“Sir, we just heard the Star Lord say that you could have taken a higher position, but you chose the insignificant Pilgrim.

We’re genuinely curious!”

The two Constables asked with a smile.

They left unsaid that the role of Pilgrim, while honorably titled, was essentially a Coachman.

In the past, it was always someone of their low-ranking Immortal status who took on such roles.

And now there was someone who had the opportunity to take a higher position but instead chose to be a Coachman—how could they not be curious?

Sun Wukong looked meaningfully at the two Constables and then slowly began to speak: “…”
