It's Your Turn To Cry and Beg, Dear Uncle
Chapter 29: His Reluctance

Chapter 29: His Reluctance

To be perfectly honest, she hadn’t thought that far ahead. One thing was certain: she wanted Lila, the woman who had belittled her, to taste her revenge. Her arrogance was what brought her demise.

Instead of apologizing, she had only thought of declaring her seniority, treating Kyra as if she were nothing more than an insignificant person. Just a stepping rock to get to James. Yet, Kyra still gave her a chance by being the first to confront Lila about her mistake.

But Lila’s response had dismissed the issue as if it was nothing big and shifted the topic. At that moment, Kyra’s anger flared, and hatred swallowed her sense of reason.

Then the incident happened. Strangely, when Kyra’s body had suspended in the air, she didn’t feel a hint of fear but rather a sense of liberation. It was as if all the turmoil and anxiety within her were swept away by the cold wind.

When she had closed her eyes, she had anticipated the incoming pain, but it never arrived. Instead, she felt an overwhelming coldness that froze her lungs. Her breathing grew shallow, and her entire body felt as if thousands of needles were piercing down on her.

Slowly, she became numb, and the darkness welcomed her in a peaceful embrace.

The sensation was so intoxicating that she refused to wake up. She wanted to keep falling, again and again, surrendering to the silence of her subconscious. Here, she felt safe—free from pain. Her overwhelming anxiety and suffocating resentment became insignificant in her slumber.

Unfortunately, reality remained in wait. As the sun set, the darkness drew her back into the hands of the man. The man who had hurt her and the man she wanted to hurt in return.

The sound of the ECG machine became louder and more grating in her ears. She struggled to open her eyes, but everything felt unbearably heavy. Not just her eyelids—her entire body felt crushed, as if she had been run over by a truck.

When she finally managed to open her eyes, the first thing that struck her was an excruciating pain, particularly in her head. Dizziness overcame her, and she immediately felt nauseous.

At that moment, a familiar voice called her name anxiously, "Kyra, can you hear me?"

Kyra frowned. It wasn’t hard for her to recognize the owner of that voice, but it seemed rather impossible for him to be that anxious.

Kyra wasn’t naive. She understood what she had done and knew well the man’s ability to uncover the truth.

Though something had transpired between them, no commitment had been made. No words had been left to tie her down or provide her with a sense of hope. James had simply walked away, leaving her in the room.

Lila was still his lover. Perhaps James would protect his lover while thinking that she was crazy, but James wasn’t the one she was betting on.

"Kyra? How are you feeling?" James was still holding Kyra’s hand, though she hadn’t realized it. He leaned forward, closing the distance between them.

Kyra in her weak and half-conscious state looked at him in confusion. She glanced around the unfamiliar surroundings and quickly realized she was in a hospital. Her gaze returned to the man in front of her.

She tried to speak, but her throat was too dry. In the end, she simply nodded.

"Wait," James said cautiously. He reached for the lever beneath the bed to raise it and then grabbed a glass of water from the bedside table.

"Drink slowly," he urged, helping Kyra sip the water. Instantly, Kyra felt much better. Though her head still throbbed and dizziness came in waves, she was slowly getting used to her condition.

The room fell silent again after James set down the glass. Kyra had been observing James intently the entire time, not once breaking her gaze. As she had suspected, this man knew something.

Despite being so close earlier, James had avoided direct eye contact. His gaze darted anxiously, as it did now. His movements suggested reluctance to look at her.

Finally, James broke the awkward silence. "I’ll call the doctor."

But just as he turned, Kyra’s hand grasped his. Her grip was feeble while her fingers felt cold to the touch as though life had yet to fully return to her. Even so, James didn’t pull away. He paused for a moment before exhaling deeply.

Then, he turned his attention back to Kyra. He expected her to mention the incident, but instead, he saw her reach for the remote attached to the hospital bed. It was the button to call a nurse.

"No need to go out," Kyra replied hoarsely, pressing the button with a flat expression. But deep in her heart, she scoffed. She wouldn’t be the one to bring up anything, as this man seemed to expect.

Not long after, a doctor and a nurse entered her VIP room. Seeing that Kyra was conscious, the doctor sighed in relief and immediately approached her for another examination. Meanwhile, the nurse beside him began updating the patient’s condition in her record sheet.

"How are you feeling now, Miss Kyra?" the doctor asked kindly, his tone gentle. This helped calm Kyra, who felt uneasy about the examination.

"Heavy and dizzy," Kyra answered briefly. She was too exhausted to think much or talk at length. The doctor nodded in understanding.

After completing the checkup, the doctor gave several instructions to the nurse regarding medication and what to monitor next.

"Tomorrow, we will return for a follow-up check up. Since it’s already late, we’ll let you rest for now. However, if you suddenly feel any discomfort or pain, please press the call button immediately. Do you have any questions, Miss Kyra and Mr. James?"

James shook his head. "No, thank you, doctor. I’ll keep an eye on her."

"Very well, then. I’ll take my leave."

As the doctor closed the door, the awkward atmosphere returned. James sat back on the chair next to Kyra’s bed, while Kyra closed her eyes, showing no intention of talking. She used her illness as an excuse to avoid James—or more precisely, to observe what James would do.

As time passed, seconds turned into hours, but neither of them broke the silence. The man continued to gaze at Kyra quietly. No one could tell what he was thinking, but his clenched fingers and his pressed lips revealed his restlessness.

Eventually, it was Kyra who felt uncomfortable. Even though she was tired and on the verge of falling asleep, James’s intense gaze loomed over her. She exhaled heavily and suddenly opened her eyes.

Without warning, their eyes met. The man’s heart skipped a beat.

Kyra noticed his startled reaction and almost chuckled. It was amusing that a man who was much older than her, wielding great power in his hands and reigned over the harsh world of business daily, was now caught off-guard by a young woman.

However, Kyra suppressed her amusement and maintained an expressionless face. "What do you want to talk about?"
