Chapter 200: Fortune in Flesh ( 200 )

"I think he went into the forest," Old Buron said, scratching his chin.

"Not sure exactly, but... you can try asking that little elf over there."

He gestured toward the front step, where Elvia was quietly sitting with her hands folded on her lap.

"Okay. Thanks."

Gikan gave a nod and stepped away from the carriages, his cloak fluttering slightly in the breeze as he approached the girl.

"Little elf?"

Elvia looked up, startled. "Y-Yes?"

He crouched a bit, trying not to loom too much.

"Where’s the human?" he asked simply.

"Miss Kisha?" she asked, tilting her head.

"Ah... no." Gikan smiled slightly. "The black-haired human."

"Oh... he said to tell you he went into the forest behind the orphanage."

Gikan stood back up, eyes flicking to the treeline behind the building.

"Okay. Thank you."

He turned to the group of guild staff and transport workers gathered near the carriages.

"All of you wait here."

Then looked at the two adventurers assigned to escort him.

"You two—follow me."

"Yes, Deputy Guild Master!"

The three headed toward the back path leading into the forest.

As they walked through the narrow trail behind the orphanage, the trees thickening and the air growing cooler, Deputy Guild Master Gikan remained silent.

His boots crunched lightly against fallen leaves, but his mind was turning.

What kind of monster did that black-haired human actually fight...?

He recalled the investigation squad leader’s report from the night before.

Mid-tier and some high-tier monsters.

That alone was alarming—enough to require B-rank adventurers at minimum... or elite beast warriors from the kingdom.

But...

The report didn’t mention species.

No specific classifications. No names. Just vague listings like "trolls," "battle wolves," "serpents," and "something large."

Too broad.

Too clean.

It felt like the squad leader was either rushed or overwhelmed.

He glanced at the two adventurers beside him. Both were alert, but silent, like they could feel the same tension building ahead.

This is why I came myself, Gikan thought.

To see just what kind of monster this "adventurer" really is.

As the group neared the forest clearing, the muffled sound of someone talking reached their ears.

"...Wonder what kind of booze I can drink tonight..."

A short pause, then—

"Hah!? No way!"

Footsteps slowed.

"I know!! Meat, right!!"

"...Is he arguing with himself?" one of the adventurers whispered.

"Yes, premium one!"

"...Damn glutton!"

"Hah!? Of course! I’m going to get drunk!"

Gikan raised a hand, motioning for silence.

They crouched behind a thick patch of trees, peering through the foliage—but the dense brush obscured their view.

They could only hear.

"My new torn clothes? Yeah, I think I’ll buy a new one..."

"He’s still going..." the other adventurer muttered under his breath.

"Wait—no, I’ve got another clean one inside this new leather bag..."

"Yeah yeah, whatever."

A beat of silence followed, just the rustling of leaves.

Gikan’s brow furrowed.

He’s having a full-on conversation.

But there’s only one voice.

He shifted slightly, narrowing his eyes.

Is he crazy...? Or... is he really talking to something we can’t see?

They stepped into the clearing.

And Deputy Guild Master Gikan froze.

His eyes widened.

His breath caught for a moment.

"What in the world..."

Before him—

A mountain.

No... a graveyard.

A massive pile of high-level monsters, stacked in organized rows.

Some scorched, some bruised—but most of them intact, clean kills.

Not torn to shreds. Not mangled. Just... defeated.

Trolls. Giants. Red-scaled serpents. Battle wolves. Goblin generals.

And more he couldn’t even name at a glance.

Not one. Not two.

But dozens.

A heavy silence filled the clearing.

"...Oh shit," one of the adventurers whispered.

Gikan took a step forward, scanning the sheer volume.

Three caravans won’t be enough.

Not even close.

"Oi!! Who are you!?"

The voice cut across the clearing.

Hazuki, standing next to the towering pile of monsters, shifted into a relaxed but ready stance, one hand resting near his hip like he was expecting trouble.

Gikan raised both hands in a show of peace.

"I’m Gikan. Deputy Guild Master of the Macia Adventurer Guild."

He kept his tone steady, respectful.

"The receptionists said you had a... sizable haul to sell."

Hazuki squinted, then nodded slowly.

"Yes. Now appraise it. And don’t even think about scamming me."

Gikan gave a small smile.

"I won’t."

He turned to the two adventurers beside him.

"You two. Go back to the carriages. Call all the guild staff. Every hand we brought."

They saluted quickly.

"Yes, Deputy Guild Master!"

"And tell them to bring more caravans."

Gikan’s voice was sharp and to the point.

"If it’s not enough, have them rent or borrow from the nearby merchants. We’re not leaving anything behind."

"Yes, Deputy Guild Master!"

The two adventurers ran off without delay.

Gikan took another slow breath and turned back toward the mountain of corpses.

He scanned the pile again.

It still didn’t feel real.

And then—

"Mmm... I can’t wait, man!!" Hazuki said suddenly, voice loud and excited.

"Yes, I know!"

"Ugh!! Of course!!"

Gikan blinked.

Hazuki stood there, facing the monster pile... seemingly having a heated conversation with the open air.

"Hey!! At least my body was doing all the work! You only helped with the AOE magic!"

A pause.

Then Hazuki leaned forward, scowling.

"Hah!? What did you say!? You wanna go, huh!? I’ll punch your face!"

He threw a fist upward—at nothing.

Gikan’s eye twitched.

...He’s talking to air again.

But this time, Gikan didn’t say anything.

He just quietly pulled out a notebook and jotted something down under.

Gikan stepped closer to the towering pile of monster corpses.

He reached out and pressed his palm against the thick, dark green hide of one of the trolls near the base.

It was cool to the touch—firm, but not rotted. Freshly killed.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"This one... is high quality."

He ran his hand along the leathery surface.

"The skin can be used for high-grade armor leather. Durable. Flexible. Premium stuff."

He moved along the side, stopping near a massive wolf-type corpse.

"And this... the fang."

He tapped one of the glistening ivory points jutting from its jaw.

"Could be forged into elite-class dagger or ceremonial blade."

Then he reached for the fur.

Thick. Glossy. Untangled.

He gave a low whistle.

"High-quality coat material. Could go straight to noble buyers. Especially for cold-weather gear."

He straightened up, slowly scanning the rest of the pile.

"...This haul... is worth a fortune."
