Chapter 198: Ghost Dealer of Macia ( 198 )
The guild hall had gone silent.
All eyes turned toward Hazuki as he walked in.
He blinked.
"...Ridan? What’s wrong with them?"
The spirit on his shoulder floated a little higher, scanning the room with lazy eyes.
"Hah? Like I know. Probably all oogling the receptionist girl up front."
Hazuki looked toward the front desk.
One of the beastkin receptionists, was organizing papers, ears twitching under the pressure of so many glances.
Hazuki nodded slightly.
"Oh yeah. Now that you mention it... she’s got a good curve."
His voice was flat. No real tone of interest. Just an observation.
Ridan glanced down at him, mildly surprised.
"...No comment about her tail?"
Hazuki shrugged.
"She’s not like Ellyn."
He said it so casually.
"Her skin’s more furred. Not my type."
Ridan smirked.
"Man of specific tastes, huh?"
"Yeah. Smooth skin, cat ears, maybe a tail. But not full fur. Pass."
Behind them, a few adventurers who overheard blinked in shock.
Did... he just say that out loud?
"Mr. Hazuki, please wait here."
One of the receptionists gestured to a small bench near the corner of the hall.
"Oh."
Hazuki walked over and sat down casually.
A moment later, another receptionist—this one holding a tray—stepped forward.
"Here’s your drink. Just something light to cool off."
"Jeez. Thanks."
Hazuki took the cup and leaned back slightly, sipping with one hand while glancing around at the guild’s busy interior.
Ridan, still floating lazily on his shoulder, narrowed his eyes.
"Hazuki."
"...What?"
"You forgot something."
Hazuki paused mid-sip.
"Hmm?"
Ridan gave him a flat stare. "Your monster pile."
Hazuki’s eyes widened.
"Ah!!" He shot up a bit from the bench. "Now that you mention it"
"Oi! Where’s the buyer for my monster parts?!"
The receptionist, unfazed, calmly replied, "We’re going to get the Deputy Guild Master first. He handles all high-volume evaluations."
Hazuki stood up.
Then, without hesitation, walked straight up to the counter.
"Tell him I’ll wait at the orphanage."
The receptionist blinked.
"Eh—"
But Hazuki was already turning around.
"Wait—Mr. Hazuki!!"
Too late.
He was already at the door, striding out casually.
The guild buzzed.
People stared.
"...Did he just walk out before getting paid?"
"Again?"
The receptionist sighed and turned to her colleague.
"Go tell the Deputy Guild Master."
The receptionist returned a moment later, this time with the Deputy Guild Master walking beside her, arms crossed and expression tight.
"Where’s the human?" he asked immediately, eyes scanning the hall.
"Umm..." she hesitated. "He already left. Said he’d be waiting at the orphanage."
The Deputy Guild Master sighed, long and deep.
"...Of course he did."
Without missing a beat, he turned and pointed toward two adventurers loitering by the mission board.
"You. And you."
They straightened instantly. "Y-Yes, Deputy Guild Master?"
"You’re going to escort me."
He turned toward the front desk.
"Kaira."
A beastkin woman looked up from her paperwork. "Yes, Deputy Guild Master?"
"Tell the staff to ready a carriage. We’re heading to the orphanage. Bring the materials. Reward paperwork. And someone competent enough to handle loot appraisal on-site."
Kaira nodded and stood immediately.
"Right away."
The Deputy rubbed his temples.
He could’ve just waited five minutes...
The Deputy Guild Master shook his head again.
One of the adventurers walking beside him whispered,
"What’s wrong with that human...?"
The other nodded.
"If it were any other adventurer, they’d be yelling, slamming the counter, demanding their reward..."
"Or sitting around glaring at the staff until someone handed them gold and meat."
But this guy...
This human...
He treated it all like it didn’t matter.
Like the reward, the rank-up, the recognition...
Weren’t even important.
The Deputy adjusted his coat and muttered under his breath.
"...He’s either the most humble man I’ve ever seen..."
"Or the most troublesome."
The two escorts exchanged nervous glances.
The Deputy Guild Master straightened his coat and turned toward the exit.
"Alright, let’s go."
He shot a glance toward the receptionist desk.
"Before he finds another buyer."
The two adventurers escorting him moved quickly to keep pace.
"If what the squad leader reported last night is true..."
He paused, frowning slightly as he recalled the details.
"...Then those monster corpses are mid to high-tier. That means huge profit for the guild."
One of the escorts nodded. "Rare materials, high-demand parts. Even just the hides could sell for a fortune."
The Deputy’s eyes sharpened.
"And if the meat is still fresh, we can supply the guild canteen. That saves coin and draws more adventurers here."
"Which means more quests completed," the other added.
"And more profit earned."
He smirked slightly.
"Not to mention... expanding the guild’s reach."
They stepped outside just as the carriage pulled up.
The Deputy climbed in, muttering as he settled onto the seat.
"Who knew our most profitable asset would be a moody human who talks to the air..."
"Now move. Fast."
He climbed up, already impatient.
"Before he disappears again."
"Yes, Deputy Guild Master!" the two adventurer escorts echoed in unison, hopping into position.
The driver snapped the reins.
The carriage lurched forward, wheels rattling as it rolled through the cobblestone streets of Macia, heading straight toward the edge of town—toward the orphanage.
Inside, the deputy leaned back with arms crossed, sighing once again.
"Let’s hope the negotiation is smooth... and no trouble."
One of the adventurers glanced at him.
"You’ve never met him directly, right?"
The deputy shook his head.
"No. I’ve never dealt with this human before. And strangely enough, there’s no report from any guild branch about his transactions or completed quests."
He pulled a thin record tablet from his coat and flipped it open, glowing softly with inscription magic.
"According to the registry, he’s been listed as an adventurer for a few months now..."
He frowned.
"...Yet no formal quest records. No material sales. No monster parts submitted. Nothing."
The adventurers exchanged uneasy glances.
"Then where’s he been selling his loot?"
That’s what I want to know."
He closed the tablet with a soft click.
"This is his first recorded transaction with the Adventurer Guild.
Silence filled the cabin.
The deputy narrowed his eyes toward the window, watching the orphanage road come into view in the distance.
"...Either he’s been hoarding everything."
"Or he’s been selling elsewhere."
