Chapter 98: A Man Worth Trusting
Chapter 98: Chapter 98: A Man Worth Trusting
After hanging up the phone with Ruth Wilcox, Yusuf Zuck apologized and took his leave. No matter how pressing other matters were, he had to hurry over to accompany her for grocery shopping and to escort her home.
Fortunately, Miles O’Brien was an understanding woman. She didn’t ask any questions; instead, she admonished Yusuf Zuck to drive carefully and not to rush.
At half-past seven in the evening, Yusuf’s Buick stopped by the revolving door of the Ferreni Hotel, and at that moment, Ruth Wilcox had already been waiting there for more than ten minutes.
In the parking lot, Floyd Hart, Wu Mao, and Benedict Cooke squatted between two cars smoking, worried about the serious trouble at the company. It seemed their goddess, Ms. Wilcox, might be replaced by someone else, so their mood was quite heavy.
Despite not having had much interaction with Ruth Wilcox, or her even knowing their names, simply seeing her in high heels every morning as she came to work filled them with contentment.
Now, as the goddess stood forlorn and alone in the night, they felt an almost irrepressible urge to curse.
Every man inherently has a protective instinct. They wanted to protect her; she was their boss, and now that she was wronged, with her position likely being moved elsewhere, how could they possibly be happy?
When Benedict Cooke saw Yusuf’s Buick stop by the door, he cracked a smile, Wu Mao’s eyebrows rose, and Floyd Hart chuckled, swearing happily, "Motherfucker next door."
Ruth boarded the car, and as Yusuf’s vehicle moved away from the front of the hotel, the three men stood up.
Yusuf slowed down, wound down his window, glanced at the three men, and said to Benedict, "Marco, treat the brothers who have the night off to dinner, put it on my tab."
"Sure, got it," Marco nodded in response.
"Brother Yusuf, you tell Ms. Wilcox, us brothers, we’re at her beck and call for anything she needs in the future!" Floyd Hart suddenly mustered the courage to say.
"Thank you, focus on your jobs and keep up the good work on your shifts," Ruth Wilcox suddenly rolled down her window and smiled at the three men.
"Yes, sir!" Wu Mao, Floyd Hart, and Benedict Cooke immediately stood at attention and saluted Ruth Wilcox.
Ruth felt a twinge in her nose, quickly rolled up the window, feeling touched. She hadn’t interacted much with these security guards, but every one of them was a man of honor.
The ancients said, "The most valiant are often those who meet their end under the butcher’s blade," perhaps alluding to the reckless heroes of the underworld, or perhaps to young men like these, brimming with hot blood?
Though they were the lowest rank within the entire company, these men were so much purer than those from the middle and upper echelons. They didn’t harbor the same ill will, they didn’t engage in the office politicking; all they had was their fiery passion!
"Actually, they’re quite adorable," Yusuf, who was driving, said as he looked at the three men in the rearview mirror. "The majority of them are ex-military, having just recently entered civilian life after discharge, and at this stage, their feelings are the most sincere."
"Yeah, all good lads," Ruth Wilcox nodded in agreement.
"What about the people from headquarters? Don’t you need to accompany them?" Yusuf wondered aloud.
"I said I was feeling unwell, so I left, and besides, the meeting had concluded this afternoon. One of my cousins will take over and be fully in charge of the domestic subsidiary," she explained.
"Your cousin?" Yusuf paused before saying, "Isn’t your dad the eldest? So you should be the oldest of your generation in the Clan, right?"
"My dad married late, almost forty when he and my mom got married," Ruth pondered, adding, "My second and third uncles married earlier, so their kids are all older than me."
"Oh," Yusuf nodded in realization. If Ruth’s father had married at the age of forty, then her cousins from her uncle’s side would indeed be much older than her.
"Why the rush? Why do you have to leave tomorrow?" Yusuf asked after some thought.
Ruth conveyed a hint of grievance, "I’m going to Shanghai tomorrow to make an apology to the Nash family, and then I’ll fly directly to the United States from there."
"Apologize? Apologize for what?" Yusuf Zuck immediately became furious. Ruth Wilcox was the victim, for goodness’ sake. If it hadn’t been for him, she might well have ended up as Tyler Nash’s sex slave by now.
"I didn’t want to go either, but Uncle Floyd... Never mind. It’s just to apologize and make amends." Ruth Wilcox shook her head without continuing, clearly her uncle had convinced her by some means.
"Then I’m coming too, or else I won’t be at ease." Yusuf Zuck narrowed his eyes. He could guess that her uncle had probably persuaded her to prioritize the bigger picture, the importance of the clan, which was why she had compromised.
"It’s not necessary. Uncle Floyd and the others will be there too, so there won’t be any problems." Ruth Wilcox shook her head.
"No way. If you go, the Nashes will definitely target you, so either you don’t go, or I come with you!" Yusuf Zuck spoke with an unquestionable tone. The trouble was caused by him, so he couldn’t let Ruth Wilcox suffer this pressure.
"We’ll talk about it tomorrow. What would you like to eat? I’ll cook for you today." Ruth Wilcox didn’t pursue the topic further.
"Whatever you make, I’ll eat." Yusuf Zuck knew that Ruth Wilcox had made up her mind not to let him follow.
"Hmm, Mia isn’t here today. Do you want to drink red wine, white wine, or beer tonight?" Ruth Wilcox suddenly asked with a smile.
"Whatever wine you take, I’ll drink."
"Then I want to get drunk. Will you keep me company?"
"I will."
"That’s a promise then. The one who doesn’t get drunk is a puppy," Ruth Wilcox said with a mischievous laugh.
"Alright." Yusuf Zuck nodded in agreement.
The two went to the supermarket they had browsed before, and then Ruth Wilcox began to pick out ingredients, with Yusuf Zuck simply pushing the cart.
At the same time, while picking out ingredients, Ruth Wilcox also said, "There’s another car in the garage, under my name. You can drive it if you like. I’ve got the sixty million you need ready. I’ll have Mia give it to you when the time comes."
"Why do you trust me so much?" Yusuf Zuck suddenly asked.
Ruth Wilcox looked at Yusuf Zuck, then continued picking ingredients and said, "A man who bought me a bowl of spicy hot soup when I was in a tough spot, a man who saved me from being kidnapped, a man who snatched me back from a pervert’s clutches, a man who took off my clothes, saw my body but didn’t disrespect me in any way... Do you think he doesn’t deserve my trust?"
"To many people, sixty million might be an astronomical figure, but in my eyes, sixty million can’t buy sincerity, protection, or respect."
"You’re making me sound too good. I’m feeling a bit uneasy," Yusuf Zuck said with a chuckle.
Ruth Wilcox lifted her head and smiled sweetly, saying, "I do hope you make it big. I’m waiting for the day you succeed. When you’re thriving in your career, I’ll be following you from overseas!"
"Can you tell me which city you live in, in the United States?" Yusuf Zuck asked thoughtfully.
Ruth Wilcox replied, "Robinsville."
"Hmm." Yusuf Zuck nodded, looking at her and saying, "One day, I will come to Robinsville to find you."
Ruth Wilcox lowered her head, her face becoming somewhat flushed and hot. She didn’t respond to Yusuf Zuck but silently acknowledged his statement.
To not speak is to acquiesce.
