Chapter 538: Chapter 537: Desperately Seeking
Marco had become Ruth Wilcox’s personal driver now, where he didn’t have to do anything else and wasn’t managed by anyone, so his status at the hotel was special, and he had money now, so his attire was quite dashing.
Of course, this might also be related to Ruth Wilcox, because as a fierce tiger, she wouldn’t allow a sloppy, snotty person to be her driver.
As her driver, you had to pay attention to your appearance from top to bottom; otherwise, you’d be in for a lecture. Fleur Carson and Yusuf Zuck knew this all too well.
Marco could relate to this too, which is why he was still wearing a suit despite the scorching heat.
It wasn’t strange, then, that the cashier sister proactively asked him out to dinner, because clearly, the newly-arrived Brother Marco had a special relationship with Ms. Wilcox, and was on brotherly terms with Director Zuck.
Calling the chairman brother and messing around—could he possibly be a regular employee? So, the cashier sister did have some insight.
And since Marco was still single, when he needed company, he’d go to the Palace (a nightclub) with Samuel Ross and the others, so now that a pretty young lady was asking him out, it really was his springtime.
After shooting the breeze with Marco for a while, Yusuf Zuck drove off bored toward home, while calling Anais Dillon on the phone. He had previously forgotten to ask him how their investigation was going.
"The man’s name is Clay Parham, works at the municipal disciplinary committee, a deputy director-level official. His father is in another province, holding the third-highest position, and they are a Clan, quite extensive. And this Clay Parham... how should I put it," Anais Dillon hesitated on the phone.
"What do you mean, ’how should I put it’? Keep going, just say whatever you have to say," Yusuf Zuck said with a laugh.
"This man is very honest and progressive. He’s acclaimed as one of the ten outstanding young men, a moral model, and so on. Essentially, he’s almost faultless, and his personal life is very disciplined. He works nine to five, doesn’t go to nightclubs, doesn’t frequent bars, doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke. He’s only ever dated one girlfriend during college and they broke up after graduation."
"Every Saturday and Sunday, he’s sure to visit two welfare homes and two nursing homes. Heck, one time I followed him and it happened to rain. He got out of the car in the pouring rain, helped an old lady cross the street, and then even gave his umbrella to her, getting soaked to the skin himself."
"He and Ember Vance were probably set up by their families. Up to now, their relationship has been limited to meals together and watching a movie, without even holding hands; they’ve always maintained a proper distance."
"Isaac Quintana and I think there are only two possibilities: either this man isn’t a real man or he’s a Machiavellian bastard with big ambitions. He has a bright future ahead of him; he’s been appointed deputy director-level official in his twenties, which in a city or county would qualify him to be a deputy mayor!"
"Even if he were president, it has nothing to do with me. Just keep an eye on him, and don’t let him overstep," Yusuf Zuck responded.
"He hasn’t overstepped himself, but boss, you can’t be like this. This refined gentleman can easily make women fall for him. Before long, Ember will be completely smitten, and you won’t be able to break them up even if you wanted to. So you’d better think of something fast. What’s the use of just watching him?" Anais Dillon warned.
"I got it. Where’s Ember Vance now?" Yusuf Zuck glanced at his watch as he spoke.
"She should be at work, still at the Garden Road police station, still the chief. That Clay Parham picks her up every day after work. They either have dinner together or he directly takes her home."
"Ember doesn’t drive herself anymore?" Yusuf Zuck was surprised.
"She doesn’t need to when someone’s there to pick her up every morning. So I’m telling you, you need to act fast," Anais Dillon said exasperatedly.
"Alright, I know what to do," Yusuf Zuck hung up, noting the time was approaching the end of the workday.
He was familiar with Garden Road, even knew the police officers there, so he took a detour and headed for Garden Road.
Anais Dillon was right; if he didn’t make a move soon, it would be too late. Once they progressed to holding hands and kissing, it would be difficult for him to interfere. So, striking while the iron was hot, he had to make them break up or separate!
Passing by a flower shop, Yusuf Zuck bought a bouquet of roses—just nine, symbolizing an eternal bond—and then arrived at Garden Road before Ember Vance’s shift ended.
Officers were coming and going inside, and several police cars, which he had donated, were parked inside.
Yusuf Zuck, carrying Hazel Dodson flowers, encountered someone he recognized, someone he had seen many times under Ember Vance’s command, though Yusuf couldn’t recall the name.
"Ah... Yusuf, you... you’re here?" The person showed a strange expression, even a hint of embarrassment upon seeing Yusuf with flowers. When Ember Vance had been head over heels in love with Yusuf, she went to great lengths out of personal feelings, helping Yusuf’s cause on many occasions. And Yusuf was a man of his word; he donated cars to the station and even shed his blood when Ember Vance was injured. It was thanks to Yusuf that Ember Vance woke up, a fact known to everyone in the station.
They had discussed these matters behind his back, feeling pity for Yusuf, but there was nothing they could do, because Ember Vance had truly lost her memory. Though she presided over the station’s work, it was the deputy commander and others who were helping her manage it.
Many said Ember Vance was merely in transition and would be promoted by the end of the year, then return to the division.
"Hello, hello, long time no see!" Yusuf greeted the person very politely, shaking hands.
"Long time no see, you’re here to see Deputy Vance, right? She’s inside, I’ll take you to her." It seemed the person was about to leave work, but they still led Yusuf into the courtyard.
People walked out of the courtyard one after another, and some recognized Yusuf. Some nodded with a smile, while others stopped to exchange polite words with him.
A moment later, Ember Vance’s office door was knocked on by the enthusiastic officer assisting Yusuf.
"Come in," was heard from Ember Vance’s voice.
The officer opened the door but didn’t enter, instead saying directly, "Deputy Vance, someone is looking for you, an old acquaintance of yours, and a benefactor of our station and division, the one who donated the cars. I’m leaving now, you two talk!" The person left cheerily without waiting for Ember Vance to respond.
Ember Vance was stunned once again. She had lost her memory of the past few years since she began working, so she was a bit confused.
Yusuf, holding the flowers, stepped inside, and when she saw him, she blinked somewhat foolishly.
"I didn’t plan on buying flowers, just saw them on my way and bought them. No other meaning, just came to see how you were," Yusuf said as he placed the flowers on the desk, not asking whether she wanted them or not. He simply put them there.
"Thank you, please have a seat. Did I used to like flowers?" Ember Vance indicated for Yusuf to sit, then poured him a cup of tea.
Her face turned slightly red. Over time, she had heard a lot about Yusuf and had even made inquiries. She was indeed very closely related to Yusuf.
"Probably not, I don’t seem to recall giving you flowers," Yusuf shook his head.
"Pfft—" Ember Vance laughed briefly, "You’re so straightforward."
"I’ve always been like this, rather direct in speech," Yusuf said with a smile, accepting the water she offered.
"I’m off work, let me take you to dinner," Ember Vance said, glancing at her watch.
"I would be delighted," Yusuf stood up and nodded in agreement.
