Chapter 100: Chapter 100: Kitchen Rap
Xinan met his gaze in the air, trying to see if he was lying to her.
But Cheng Yi’s gaze was very sincere, and as she looked for a long time, she couldn’t find a trace of deception.
"Do you really have nothing to do with her?" Xinan asked tentatively.
"No."
"Oh." Xinan turned her face to one side, but her lips couldn’t help curling into a smile, "Then... then stay away from her."
Xinan had thought Cheng Yi would ask her why, but to her surprise, he didn’t ask anything and simply said softly, "Alright."
"Are you not going to ask me why?"
Cheng Yi said, "You have your reasons, if I asked, would you tell me?"
Xinan thought about it, and it seemed to make sense.
Now her relationship with Lin Wei had completely broken down, and these private matters of theirs, she didn’t want to let Cheng Yi know.
"Alright then." Xinan whispered these two words and dropped the topic.
However, she really shouldn’t continue wallowing in defeat.
If she kept going like this, she’d soon be unable to support herself.
Although these past few days she didn’t have to pay for food and living expenses at Cheng Yi’s house, Xinan had counted everything very clearly. She wouldn’t take advantage without giving something back, and as soon as she earned money, she would pay him back immediately.
She really didn’t want to owe him anything...
So... Xinan gave Cheng Yi another role in her heart, that of a creditor.
Otherwise, she really didn’t know how to interact with him, an ex-husband is too ambiguous, and an old lover is too entangled.
So, once the public opinion had died down, Xinan started rushing to various production crews to audition.
Her contract with the company, or rather, her former company, was completely terminated a few days ago.
Now, she could say she had nothing, neither resources nor backing.
After five years in the industry, she had returned as a newcomer.
At first, Xinan wasn’t accustomed to auditioning at these production crews, as she had fallen from the peak to the bottom all of a sudden and hadn’t recovered yet.
But as she faced rejection after rejection, from initially auditioning for the role of the Female Lead to the secondary female roles she couldn’t land either, she became numb and slowly accepted that she wasn’t the same Xinan as before.
Because she really was short of money now!
Finally, after her relentless efforts, there was a production crew willing to take her on.
The second female lead in a low-budget web series.
But for Xinan at this point, she was already very satisfied.
Under the current circumstances, having a director willing to use her was already pretty fantastic.
To celebrate her getting the role, on her way home, she even specially bought some red wine and groceries.
She had to treat herself well.
When Cheng Yi got back, he immediately noticed something off about Xinan.
Because as soon as he walked in, he heard singing from the kitchen.
To be accurate, it should be called "reciting" lyrics.
But Xinan herself was singing enthusiastically, oblivious to the person who had stood at the kitchen door, completely immersed in her own world.
Xinan sang while waving her hands: "I won’t stay up for the limited edition parties, I sleep only when the day brightens, time is more expensive than LV, life is short so how can it be wasted..."
There was a part of the song that she couldn’t remember the lyrics to, so she started humming, but completely out of tune.
She stirred the dish in the wok, turned to grab a plate, and there he was, hands crossed over his chest, leaning at the kitchen entrance with a smirk, staring at her.
"Ah!" Xinan was startled, nearly dropping the plate to the ground.
She patted her chest and took a moment to recover, "You... when did you come back? You don’t make any noise when you walk. You scared me to death."
"I just got back. You were too engrossed in your singing to notice," Cheng Yi deliberately emphasized the word "singing."
Xinan’s face immediately flushed a pale red as she murmured in a mosquito-like voice, "I was just singing casually."
"Mm, not bad singing."
Although Cheng Yi was complimenting her, Xinan felt there was an undertone in his words.
And his expression was particularly intriguing.
"Oh."
Cheng Yi looked down at her, his smile never fading, "Sing more often in the future."
Though it wasn’t pleasant, her voice was very clear, and he liked listening to it.
He also liked Xinan like this, full of vitality and life.
Xinan was speechless.
She swore she would never sing again in Cheng Yi’s house in her life.
Puffing her cheeks, she said, "Wash your hands and get ready for dinner."
"Okay."
But he didn’t leave. Instead, he entered the kitchen to fetch bowls and chopsticks, and then serve the rice.
After placing the bowls and chopsticks on the dining table in the living room, he came back to help Xinan with the dishes.
Cheng Yi glanced at the table full of delicious dishes and the bottle of red wine beside it, and couldn’t help but ask, "Is today some kind of holiday?"
Xinan handed him the poured glass of red wine, "Sort of, celebrating the good day that I successfully joined the cast."
Cheng Yi raised an eyebrow, "You passed the audition?"
"Mhm."
Cheng Yi lifted his glass to clink with hers and took a sip. He didn’t finish it, just set it on the table, "Then congratulations."
Xinan smiled slightly, "Thank you, but it’s just a secondary female role."
Cheng Yi frowned slightly, "Weren’t you always playing the female lead before?"
Xinan let out a long sigh, "With my reputation so tarnished now, no director dares to cast me. Forget the lead role, this secondary role was hard-fought for through several auditions."
Cheng Yi stopped himself from speaking, stayed silent for two seconds, but then asked, "Do you need my help?"
He had thought about helping her behind the scenes. After all, money was the least of his concerns, and if Xinan wished, he could even start a new entertainment company just for her.
He had known for a while that Xinan had terminated her contract with her previous agency. The reason he had sat by, doing nothing, was that he understood her nature too well – even if he wanted to help, she wouldn’t accept it.
Xinan shook her head, "No need, you’ve already helped me a lot. I don’t want to trouble you further, and... I already know that you were the one behind ’Mist,’ so this time, I want to rely on myself."
A flicker of astonishment crossed Cheng Yi’s face; he hadn’t expected Xinan to know, "Did Ran Shasha tell you?"
"No, I guessed it myself."
After saying that, Xinan suddenly put down her chopsticks and looked at Cheng Yi, "Brother Yi, the kindness you showed me in the past made me mistakenly think you liked me. But since you don’t, it means you only see me as a sister. And now, I’ve started to let go of you slowly..."
Xinan paused, looking at Cheng Yi and trying to muster a smile, "Brother Yi, can we still interact like we did in high school? As brother and sister."
Listening to Xinan’s words, Cheng Yi didn’t say anything throughout. Since that day, he hadn’t expected Xinan to show him any good favor anymore.
Since they couldn’t be husband and wife, being like siblings seemed pretty good too, at least he could still have a role in treating her well in the future.
So, without a second thought, he replied, "Okay."
