Chapter 561: Chapter 33 Kill the Newbie
Heavy panting filled the alley as the soldiers struggled to resist. Fear and stress grew as they watched their comrades being torn apart. Furthermore, dried corpses were leaping down from above. After three of their comrades had died, their formation couldn’t be maintained any longer and the captain hastily ordered a retreat. They were not willing to rush towards their death at the parking lot. As for what would happen if they did not complete their mission, they no longer cared. The priority was to survive.
"Xu Liangmao, drive the truck. Dantai Ruxiong, take a pickup and suppress the corpse horde with the machine gun." Tang Zheng ran towards a truck loaded with ammunition, grabbed a handful of it and stored it into his Space Wristwatch.
Zhao Guangji ran the fastest, reaching the truck first. As soon as he lifted the canvas at the back of the truck preparing to climb in, two dried corpses sprang out from inside, jumping on him and biting his shoulder and stomach.
Lin Haifeng and Old Tang, who were following behind, were taken aback. They raised their rifles and fired at them. Bang Bang, the bullets missed the corpses and went straight into Zhao Guangji’s body, causing him to whimper in pain.
The unfortunate breeder could have initially used his hands to fend off the corpse’s biting. But, being shot sapped him of his strength. He glared at the two newbies who seemed to have tried helping him, cursing angrily.
Quite startled, Lin Haifeng didn’t dare to continue shooting. Old Tang, however, gritted his teeth, his eyes fierce. Seeing Tang Zheng collecting the truck in the corner of his eye and remembering how Zhao Guangji ruthlessly pushed himself into the horde of corpses to save his own skin earlier, the cameraman viciously pulled the trigger.
"You..." Zhao Guangji sensed something was wrong, but it was too late. Bullets pierced his chest one after the other, blurring his flesh.
"Go to hell!" Old Tang muttered, watching Zhao Guangji convulse like a dying catfish, feeling more delightful than climax. That was the joy of revenge.
Chen Jiarong didn’t care about these two. He climbed into the truck and looked deeply at Old Tang. This man, who sought revenge for the smallest grievances, was terrifying. Although what Zhao Guangji did was wrong, killing him himself was too extreme. It wasn’t just killing a bug, but taking a human life.
"It seems I need to be more ruthless, or I won’t survive until the end." Chen Jiarong warned himself silently. He suddenly thought that he must solidify his relationships with his classmates, Cai Nan and Sister Shan Shan, to form a self-defending team.
Under stress, people either collapse or actively cope.
Zhao Guangji died with his eyes open, vomiting blood, and left to the mercy of the corpses. Old Tang was ecstatic, the thrill of killing causing his adrenaline to surge. He was no longer scared. Standing still, he unloaded his entire ammo clip into the body of a corpse.
"Someone died?" Tang Zheng did not expect something like this to happen in the few seconds he left. Upon seeing the bullet holes, he understood the situation. He slapped Old Tang in the face.
That almost 150-pound man, who was more than 1.8 meters tall and had honed his muscle from carrying a camera all day, seemed so powerless at that moment. He was slapped away, rolling on the ground like a ragged sack, his face rapidly swelling.
Old Tang on the ground was stunned, gripping his rifle tightly. But when he looked up, he saw the icy face of Tang Zheng, and his heart skipped a beat. He lowered his head like a chastised child.
"What, you want to kill me?" Tang Zheng sneered at Old Tang, whose hands were shaking, "Zhao Guangji was indeed in the wrong, but it’s not your place to punish him."
"I was wrong." Old Tang apologized, knowing that it would be easier for Tang Zheng to kill him than squishing an ant.
"Tang Zheng, what are you dazing for? Let’s go." Dantai was standing on the pickup, operating the machine gun to sweep away the encircling corpses.
"Get on, just this once." Tang Zheng didn’t plan on arguing with Old Tang. After all, he most likely wouldn’t survive once he returned to the room. Killing a newbie meant a deduction of 1,000 points. Might as well take advantage of his momentary fear and find some residual value.
"Zhao Guangji died in such a place? How stupid!" Looking at the mangled corpse, Dantai laughed. He used to have high hopes for that man. Even though his character wasn’t great, he was brave and unafraid to fight. However, to be shot from behind like this proved that even the best-laid plans may go awry. If Zhao Guangji had known this would happen, he probably would regret pushing Old Tang into the horde of corpses in the lobby.
With the help of the cars for transportation and the firepower for cover, the remaining nine people swiftly rushed towards the inn.
Seeing the truck coming, the soldiers immediately cheered. They initially thought it was their own men who had won as expected. But when they saw an Eastern man standing on the pickup leading the way, their cheers came to a sudden stop, as though their throats had been strangled.
"Impossible. Are Chinese civilians stronger than professional soldiers?" Not only George, but other foreign soldiers also looked incredulously at Dantai skillfully operating the heavy machine gun, killing the corpses blocking the way.
"Huh, our urban management officers are even fiercer!" The little Lolita was very proud and threw out a sarcastic comment.
The truck screeched to a stop in front of the inn. However, George didn’t care, and didn’t even arrange for his men to receive and carry the ammunition. He stared at the road entrance, just wanting to know the fate of his soldiers.
Two bloody soldiers retreated the way they had come, occasionally turning around to fire a few shots. But they couldn’t hold back the dried corpses. Before they could get out of the alley, they were toppled and bitten to death.
"Ignore the ammunition and go into the inn." Seeing George’s selfish behavior, Tang Zheng was furious. He didn’t bother with the truck anymore, telling the newbies to retreat. He himself shouldered four boxes of ammunition, yet his speed didn’t slow at all.
"Did Zhao Guangji die?" Seeing one less person, Lin Weiguo sighed, while the other soldiers breathed a sigh of relief. Good, they didn’t win completely. They knew their team members’ chances were slim. If everyone came back, they would lose face. But Tang Zheng’s next words made their faces turn green and their mouths bitter.
"He was slaughtered by Old Tang."
"What?" Everyone’s eyes stared at Old Tang in unison. Finding himself the object of scrutiny, Old Tang felt his whole body hair standing on end, and he subconsciously clenched his rifle.
Tang Zheng saw Old Tang’s distress and nervousness and helped him out with an explanation, shifting the blame onto Zhao Guangji. This was an opportunity to earn someone’s favor, and he wouldn’t give it up.
"Old Tang, did you know? The Conquerors deduct a thousand points if they kill newbies or if team members kill each other. That’s why Tang Zheng expelled Ruan Feifei who wanted to kill her. Otherwise, do you think the female host could have survived?" Lu Fan, looking at the slap mark on Old Tang’s face, turned his eye, understood Tang Zheng’s intention to keep him, put on a "you’re screwed" face, and told him the Trojan Rules.
The blood drained from Old Tang’s face at once, he was stunned, all his gains vanished in this moment.
"No, you’re lying to me." Old Tang refused to believe.
"Believe it or not, by the way, your most important job now is to desperately kill the enemy and get a thousand points." Lu Fan pointed at everyone present, "Just a friendly advice, three-quarters of us didn’t score over a thousand in the first round. Judging from your current record, it’s good if you can earn two hundred basic points."
The newbies turned pale. They were already familiar with what basic points were, but they had harbored a slim chance, thinking they were deceived by the Conquerors to act as cannon fodder. Now it seemed that it was indeed the case.
"Tang Zheng, you dared to watch one of my men die?" George was enraged, he rushed over and wanted to grab him by the collar.
Dantai and Yu Manli took a step forward to stop him. Chu Baichuan also clenched his fist, ready to fry him. His wife had reminded him several times to find a chance to show goodwill to Tang Zheng.
"You want civilians to save professional soldiers? Are you out of your mind?" Tang Zheng gave him no face, or else he might think you are easy to bully.
"You...." George was so frustrated he almost coughed blood.
"Alright, the ammunition has been recovered. This is victory, I’ll take care of the battle losses." Jasons stepped in to mediate. He realized that Tang Zheng may be outnumbered, but his battalion was absolutely equivalent to twenty elite soldiers. With only three men leading a group of disorderly people, they completed the mission. You just can’t lose to them.
"Since you’re so strong, then you and your subordinates take on the task of defending the inn’s main entrance!" George inhaled deeply to steady his emotions and assigned another task to Tang Zheng.
"Hey, didn’t you get it wrong? Weren’t we said that retrieving the ammunition means we don’t have to defend the lobby? Is your word cheaper than Jin Yuan’s?" Lu Fan looked at him with contempt.
"Drink, eat, rest." Tang Zheng directly ignored George, and decisively gave the command. He then walked to the bar and picked a bottle of whiskey.
"Fine, but once we run out of ammunition, you’ll have to rob." George’s face was iron blue from anger, but there was nothing he could do. He couldn’t outdo Tang Zheng, and being in charge of a large operation, his laziness could lead to more casualties. Besides, Jasons wouldn’t agree, and those workers would eat him alive.
"Everyone, grab your guns and get ready for battle." George had initially planned to save bullets to last the night, but seeing Tang Zheng’s approach, he immediately handed out guns to those workers.
"If the inn is breached, I’ll just dump you burdens and relocate, find a house to defend." George also hardened his heart. Seeing Tang Zheng calmly sitting at the bar eating an apple from who knows where, George was almost gnashing his teeth in anger.
"Aima, come and join me for a drink." Tang Zheng looked nonchalant on the surface, but in his heart, he had long calculated the measures to take if the inn was breached. To believe in others is never as good as to believe in oneself.
"Aren’t you too calm?" Aima wasn’t in the mood for a drink. Hearing the continuous howling sounds of the dried corpses and the uninterrupted gunfire, she was scared out of her wits.
"Don’t worry, as long as we’re not all dead, you’ll definitely be safe." Tang Zheng poured a glass of wine and pushed it toward Aima, "Calm down."
"Thank you!" Listening to Tang Zheng’s calm voice, Aima suddenly felt reassured. (To be continued... If you like this novel, please go to qidian.com to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my biggest motivation).
