Chapter 477: Chapter 35: Struggle at the Bottom
Planning to abandon the Hummer before reaching the small town, Tang Zheng and his group decided to proceed on foot. However, Ai Yixin, with her swollen belly, could not withstand the physical exhaustion and strain. Otherwise, it would lead to a miscarriage. Thus, they had no choice but to charge ahead. Nonetheless, Tang Zheng had already thought of a contingency plan.
Approaching them were five military police team members, clad in knee-high boots and wide-brimmed hats, with stern expressions on their faces. If it weren’t for the tens of thousands of routed soldiers who had gathered outside the small town, the number of people who came to ’greet’ Tang Zheng would have been much larger.
Before they could speak, Tang Zheng had already jumped out of the car and was frantically shouting at them.
"Where’s the doctor? My sister’s about to give birth."
His performance could easily win an Oscar. Those nearby who witnessed this scene instantly felt a shiver down their spines, instinctively worrying for a pregnant woman they have never met before, while simultaneously admiring her compassionate brother.
The military policemen also began to get nervous. After all, Tang Zheng was in a high-stress situation due to his sister’s condition, and he might cause trouble without considering the consequences. Also, the small town was like a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any moment. Thus, they swallowed their intended questions and reprimands for Tang Zheng.
A military policeman peeked into the Hummer and, upon confirming their intentions were genuine, he finally relaxed. Ai Yixin’s sweaty forehead and exhaustion were clearly evident and required no pretense.
"Where did you get this Hummer?" They continued with their routine questioning. Speaking from a place of authority, the policemen were quite stern, their gazes piercing Tang Zheng who stood before them.
"A kind-hearted Major gave it to us." Tang Zheng remained nonchalant in the face of their intimidation. The nearby Ruan Zhimin marvelled at Tang Zheng’s composure. If he was not sitting in the same vehicle, he would have loved to create some trouble for Tang Zheng.
"Why set up a roadblock outside the small town? Quickly let us in." Tang Zheng took out a bunch of confiscated money and attempted to stuff it into the key military policeman’s hands, who ungraciously accepted it.
They were still three to four kilometers away from the small town. Over the past few days, many criss-crossing trenches had been dug up. There were various forts built from reinforced concrete filled with soldiers, and numerous black muzzles of cannons and guns directed at the frontline positions. It was due to the dread of these formidable defences that the routed soldiers hesitated to attack the small town.
"There are no doctors available now. Nobody is allowed into the town while it is under martial law." The declaration by the military policeman immediately sparked a commotion, but it wasn’t enough chaos for Tang Zheng’s liking. He wanted to stir up more.
"Then what should we do about my sister? Just watch her die?" Tang Zheng shouted loudly in anger. The performance put up by Qin Yan and Pang Meiqin was marvellously in sync with Tang Zheng’s, with particularly moving delivery from Little Lolita, that evoked an overwhelming sense of sympathy from the crowd.
Among them were a considerable number of temporarily drafted civilians who found this scene familiar, they too began to confront and question the military police, fretting about their own predicament.
Mundane civilians couldn’t really tell the difference between military police and ordinary soldiers, treating them all with the same contempt. If replaced with ordinary soldiers, they would not dare act so arrogantly.
"What are you looking at? Disperse!" The situation seemed to be getting out of control. The five military police were sweating profusely. If chaos broke out, they would be the first ones in trouble. Hence, deciding against prolonging their stay, they fled the scene.
"You all can’t go. We demand an answer on when we can enter the small town. We are civilians. We are not obligated to fight." Tang Zheng attempted to grab the military police captain by his clothes but failed as the captain quickly dodged away. Upon hearing Tang Zheng’s pressing questions, other civilians too began seeking answers, their emotions stirred.
Having been in the military police for many years, these fellows were cunning. Sensing the dire situation, they immediately fled, much to the amusement of the soldiers who laughed and even threw rocks at them.
Amid all the unrest, Tang Zheng instructed Xu Biyun and Liu Yue to care for Ai Yixin, while he forcefully paved a way through the crowd and managed to escape.
"Have some water." Seeking a secluded area away from the checkpoint, the group took a breather. Tang Zheng took out several bottles of mineral water and handed them around.
The voluptuous Vietnamese lady licked her lips, eager to grab a bottle.
"Don’t do anything stupid!" Tang Zheng glared at her before throwing her a bottle.
"I’m not stupid." Her expression was cold, but she didn’t refuse, unscrewing the cap and gulping it down.
"Aren’t you afraid I might add potassium cyanide?" Tang Zheng asked indifferently. Ruan Zhimin and the other two reacted like rats scared by a cat, they jumped at Tang Zheng’s words. The voluptuous lady choked on the water, incessantly coughed and her cheeks turned red.
"Seriously, you guys are too timid!" Seeing the lady angrily threw the bottle on the ground, Lu Fan rinsed his mouth with the water and spat it out with a laugh.
"Humph! Why did you take so many supplies?" The Vietnamese lady glared at Lu Fan and questioned Tang Zheng.
"Killed some Beastmen, so the more, the better." Tang Zheng replied, showing no signs of remorse. He certainly wouldn’t reveal that he had slaughtered quite a few other Trojan Squad members, letting them confront the Beastmen.
After resting for a few minutes, Tang Zheng took out the group leader from the Philippines’ Gauss Sniper Rifle and handed it over to Lu Fan.
"It’s not confiscated, is it? You’re so awesome, uncle." Lu Fan clutched the rifle, inspecting the ammo clip and the barrel skilfully.
The expressions of the three Vietnamese people suddenly changed to intense concentration and there was a trace of greed in their eyes. No one could stay calm in the face of an S-level prop.
"Maybe Liu Yue should have it." Lu Fan handled the gun with care, cherishing it, but still handed it over to Liu Yue. As a Seed Ability holder with a shooting series, she would be able to bring out the full power of the Gauss Sniper Rifle.
