Chapter 422: Chapter 41: Escape, Reduction of Staff and Ambush_3

"You’re not bad either." Tang Zheng thought of Lin Weiguo; they were both the kind of teammates who made collaboration worry-free.

"Give me a few more ammo clips." Gao Wei was accustomed to the Type 81 rifle, and he knew he wouldn’t be as proficient if he abruptly changed weapons.

"Don’t worry about wasting them; we have plenty left." Taking advantage of the lull in ghoul attacks, Lu Fan quickly handed over the ammo clips.

"Once we get back alive, I’ll swap this out for an unblemished gun!" Tang Zheng swore he’d never use the spoils of war they had captured. If they jammed or had duds, it would be more than frustrating. Even for firearms, he only used those that were flawless.

"Haha, we’ve never even touched a Type 95 gun, not to mention a Type 03. But I’m used to the Type 81, I don’t want to change." Gao Wei held the worn-out Type 81, treasuring it like a child, and didn’t want it to suffer a single scratch.

With the two powerful party members, the group progressed quickly and safely. Upon safely returning to the warehouse, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. They were not far from the exit. Looking at the clean ground where they couldn’t find a single scorpion corpse, the survivors felt their scalps tingle.

"Hmph. The ghouls are certainly industrious servants. Those corpses will suffice their consumption for an entire spring," Gao Yu cursed, entirely missing the point.

"How many ghouls does it take to move the bodies of thousands of scorpions within half a day?" Shivering, Li Meilian clung to Tang Zheng’s arm, urging him to leave as soon as possible.

Without waiting for Tang Zheng’s orders, the Wastelanders darted into the previously inspected warehouse to replenish their ammunition. Meantime, not wasting any time, he, along with Lu Fan, went to retrieve the supplies from the other rooms.

"Ah, I’ve been bitten!" With the cry of a young soldier, gunshots rang out again. Gao Yu was startled and took a defensive stance with his gun, yet he did not move to help.

Just a few seconds later, Old Pavel’s group emerged, grimy and disheveled. Two radiation scorpions, the size of rhinos, scampered out, pursued by quite a few small scorpions. This was clearly a family of scorpions.

A barrage of gunfire and a thrown hand grenade disturbed the scorpion nest and set them on the warpath.

Boom! A brilliant beam of energy pierced the largest radiation scorpion. The wound was instantly charred - the result of the onslaught from Tang Zheng’s Gauss sniper rifle.

"What did you use to make that shot? It doesn’t look like it was an impact beam," Gao Yu hastily asked as he emerged from the warehouse after the scorpions were eliminated.

"An impact beam," Lu Fan replied, thinking to himself that this guy must be an idiot. Who would tell you the answer except for braggers?

The Wastelanders didn’t care about such matters and once again emerged, this time carrying supplies in bundles.

"Can you run?" Gao Yu mocked, then sidled over to Dantai. "Do you think he’ll give us bottle caps when he sells those supplies?"

"Yes, he will." Dantai had no doubts about Tang Zheng’s character, and he, too, felt slightly relieved. Once he got out and sold the spoils, he would consider this mission accomplished.

The rest of the journey went smoothly, though Tang Zheng had to spend a few points to put on the Hellfire armor and act as a laborer, clearing the collapsed tunnel entrance. When they stepped back into the Grand Hall of the Church of the Holy Virgin, everyone was overwhelmed by the lightness of surviving a calamity.

"The armored vehicle has been destroyed." Lu Fan pointed at the BMP-3, lying demolished on the ground, torn apart by radiation creatures.

"Let’s get out of here right away. I don’t want to stay here a moment longer." Gao Yu whistled and asked, "Which way should we run?"

Although the Wastelanders were born and raised in Moscow, they seldom went to the Red Square, so they didn’t know the way.

"Westward, that way." Dantai, who had memorized the map of Moscow, voluntarily took on the role of guide.

Tang Zheng hesitated for a moment but didn’t reveal that he had an armored vehicle. He couldn’t explain how he had procured it. However, the group moved quickly this time, not giving the ghouls any chance to encircle them.

When they left Red Square and hit a street, the young soldiers and the remaining adult adventurers strayed away from Tang Zheng, whispering and occasionally glancing back at him.

Gao Yu held his rifle and shot Dantai and Gao Wei a glance. Meanwhile, Tang Zheng sensed something was amiss. With the end of the escape in sight, avarice began fermenting in the hearts of the Wastelanders. For them, who lived in poverty, killing for a few supplies was all too common.

Old Pavel caught a glimpse from the corner of his eye of a young soldier aiming at Tang Zheng and his group who were walking ahead. He immediately pulled his son aside to dodge, with no thought of stopping it.

"Get down!" Tang Zheng took a step forward, shielding the female supermodels with his body. His Thunderstorm rifle had already started shooting, just as Gao Yu and Dantai also opened fire.

"Damn." Gao Wei cursed as he sought cover and took out a young soldier’s head with a shot.

The power of the thunderballs was immense. Tang Zheng and Qin Yan suppressed the young soldiers, causing them to panic. As they wore protective clothing, they didn’t fear a shootout.

The fight ended in just five seconds. All the rebels turned into minced meat and lay on the snow, extremely conspicuous.

Looking at the young soldiers who had been fighting alongside them until just a moment ago, now turned into corpses, Tan Hui was a bit sentimental. Tang Zheng just sighed and let go of those thoughts, pointing his gun at Old Pavel.

"Group Leader, don’t be rash." Old Pavel was in a difficult position and deeply regretted the actions of those men.

"Come out. I want everything about us to remain a secret." Thinking of Old Pavel’s wife and daughter at home, Tang Zheng couldn’t pull the trigger. His heart softened.

Gao Wei patted Tang Zheng’s shoulder, sympathizing.

Without hesitation, Old Pavel jumped out, trying to demonstrate his innocence. He knew that if it came to a fight, he would be dead within a second. Tang Zheng, Gao Wei, and Dantai were too powerful.

"I won’t reveal the secrets of the shelter, just give me something to eat." Old Pavel gave up his share of the supplies, begging only for his life.

"I won’t go back on my word." Tang Zheng had a few things he wanted Old Pavel to do. After all, it was better to deal with a familiar face than to find an unfamiliar guide.

"Sniper!" Gao Yu was just about to convince Tang Zheng to kill Old Pavel and his son when someone shouted ’Sniper!’ in Chinese in the street.

Everyone quickly took cover. The next moment, bullets whizzed past. Old Pavel, who couldn’t understand Chinese, reacted half a beat later. His head was immediately blown apart, looking like a rotten watermelon. (To be continued.
