Chapter 416: Chapter 39: Abundant Supplies and a Run for Life_3
Due to his rapid sprinting, the tactical flashlight in Gao Yu’s hand was shaking non-stop, making it impossible to see the path clearly. As he rounded a corner, five ghouls sprung out of a ventilation duct in the wall, knocking him down.
Amid the bangs of gunshots, Gao Yu was entangled with them.
"Switch to your handgun," Old Gao roared, trying to remind him. The fool was indeed stupid. The barrel of the AN94 was too long. It was of no use in melee combat except for the risk of hitting one’s own man.
In such chaotic circumstances, Old Soldier Gao Wei didn’t dare to fire his gun to assist, fearing accidental injury. Tan Hui looked at Gao Yu and, after a moment’s hesitation, ran away leaving him behind.
"What a drag," Tang Zheng, utilizing the inertia of his sprint, landed a kick on a ghoul’s head. The unlucky creature’s neck immediately snapped with a crack. Then Tang Zheng drew his M1911A1 from its holster and started shooting rapidly.
The ghoul’s head burst like a rotten watermelon, with thick fluid and skull fragments spilling down, splattering Gao Yu’s face. Sensing the pungent smell in his mouth, the young man was just about to start cursing when a bullet whizzed past his ear and hit the floor.
"Are you trying to kill me?" Gao Yu heaved off the corpse on top of him and stood up. He abandoned all thoughts of fighting back against the swarm of scorpions, only focusing on escaping.
The female models, grasping this opportunity, had already run in front of Tang Zheng. Seeing him holding off the swarm gave them a fair amount of reassurance.
After his outburst, Gao Yu regretted his actions. He understood that Tang Zheng’s approach of providing aid was the quickest. Had it been anyone else, they probably wouldn’t have given him a second look, let alone come to his rescue.
Tang Zheng had no time for banter. The sound of hand grenades detonating came incessantly from the passage behind him. Despite acting as a temporary deterrent, they failed to stop the advancing scorpion swarm. In a brief span of about six to seven minutes, they lost over a dozen men, all consumed by the scorpions.
Tang Zheng originally wanted Yin Shangwu and Gao Yu to take the lead and clear a path. But the wastelanders, upon spotting their spoils of war, blatantly disregarded him and went ahead. However, advancing first did not guarantee safety, as ghouls continued to appear from various ventilation ducts, attacking them.
"There’s a fork in the road," Tan Hui panted out. Not knowing which way to run, even the young soldiers halted. In this crisis, they instinctively gave the power of decision-making to Tang Zheng, the person with the most prestige amongst them who had been leading them in combat.
"Find the narrowest path. If there isn’t one, choose the third one on the left," Tang Zheng said. Even if it meant relying on luck, he had to maintain the initiative in his own hands.
Tan Hui was slow to react and was still searching when Yin Shangwu had already dragged her into a path. The young soldiers hurriedly followed.
Tang Zheng saw several elevators, but considering they were being closely chased by the scorpions, even if there was power, he didn’t dare use them. The pressing danger from the scorpions breathing down their necks made it difficult to breathe. If it wasn’t for the power of the three Thunderstorm rifles amongst them, who were firing without concern for the ammunition consumption, they would have been overrun long ago.
It was the first time that Dantai felt so powerless. If the Conquerors were only thinking of themselves, they were surely doomed.
"Dantai, you can’t help us here. Go ahead and clear the path. Also keep an eye on the female models," Tang Zheng said. Gaining their favor was as simple as uttering a few words. There was no reason he wouldn’t do it. To think that he didn’t even have time to worry about wasting ammo.
Thunderballs whizzed past with a whoosh, reducing the scorpions at the back to smithereens. Because they were so concentrated, every shot was a hit. Tang Zheng could even see silver seeds shining in the darkness as they fell to the ground, but he had no way of collecting them.
The ground beneath their feet was inclined upward, which meant they were escaping the warehouse. This gave everyone more confidence.
"There’s a door," Sholokhov blurted out. Without hesitation, he fired a few shots at the iron gate. After ensuring there were no monsters nearby, he rammed into it directly.
With a painful creaking sound, the iron gate was forced open slightly. But as soon as Sholokhov squeezed his way through, he froze. The passage was teeming with large scorpions.
A few scorpions that had been lying in ambush nearby lunged at the intruders as soon as they appeared. Sholokhov tried to dodge but other young soldiers rushing in behind him blocked his retreat. He ended up being impaled by six stingers.
Blood spurted out from the unlucky victims, covering half of the iron gate, screams echoing everywhere. The horrifying spectacle scared the crowd behind them into not moving forward.
"Clear the way," Tang Zheng commanded as he tossed Lu Fan aside. He threw a bundle of explosives behind him, quickly armed his Hellfire, and charged at the iron gate.
When the gate swung open, it struck several nearby scorpions, splattering their entrails everywhere. Then, the Impact Beam and the triplet-barreled machine gun on his shoulder stirred a storm of blood and gore in the short, fifty-meter passage.
The passage was teeming with scorpions. It was like they were placed in a meat grinder, their blood and flesh splashing everywhere, covering everything. The young soldiers were dumbfounded. Looking at the place where Tang Zheng had stood, there were not even whole corpses of scorpions left. They were so stunned that within the blink of an eye, the floor was coated with more than a foot of thick sludge.
While the female models were still in a daze, Dantai and Qin Yan had already rushed in. Lu Fan and Yin Shangwu followed close behind. Feeling the slippery sensation of fresh blood and flesh beneath their feet, the models were on the verge of vomiting. Li Meilian and Liu Yue lost their footing and fell, filling their mouths with the disgusting taste. A wave of nausea immediately surged from their stomachs, and they vomited.
"Run!" The swarm of scorpions had already entered the passage. Tang Zheng had no choice but to detonate the explosives.
In the bright light of the explosion, they could clearly see the blast wave lift the sludge in the passageway, like a tsunami. It washed over the female models, coating them as if a layer of paint was sprayed on them, turning the entire passage into a scene of bloody terror.
Everyone who survived was swallowed by the blood tsunami, chunks of meat even made their way into their noses and collars. No one cared about that. They were all struggling, fighting to escape.
Not wanting to waste the minute of open-fire time, Tang Zheng left the others behind and proceeded alone, clearing out a safe passage. The few stray ghouls attempting to attack him couldn’t even bite through his armor. Instead, they were pulverized into a mush by his punches, their bodies and bones splintered and fractured.
Hearing the continuous sound of explosions behind him, Gao Yu was annoyed. Did Tang Zheng not care about potentially blowing up his own men?
However, the young soldiers that lagged behind had no complaints. They were instead praying for more explosions to deter the advancing scorpions. (To be continued.
