Chapter 389: Chapter 24 Snowfield Assassination

This time, Tang Zheng didn’t bring a mountaineering bag, but chose a 35L 3P Attack Backpack in desert color, an imitation military product. Indeed, better non-damage tactical backpacks could be bought from Trojan, but he didn’t need them. The backpack was merely to avoid attracting attention.

Although the Space Wristwatch made weapon switching convenient, the process of changing ammo clips was still awkward. So, Tang Zheng had to wear a tactical vest, and the palms of his two Defense suits were cut off, taped tightly around the cuffs, revealing the wristwatch. He was wearing full-finger tactical gloves, and he put on thick cotton gloves when not in combat.

Dantai Zongqi and Gao Yu’s equipments were almost the same, both carried Type 95 rifles, but the latter had an extra M200 sniper rifle. The pistols they carried differed too, one was a Type 92, the other a Desert Eagle. Gao Yu, a child grown up playing CS, liked the silver Desert Eagle very much, regardless of whether or not he could handle the recoil.

"They’re coming." Luo Xiji called out, and after looking at his watch, he started to wave, "Time’s up, let’s head out."

Two hundred people in the group began to make various noises, like a swarm of ants, with their luggage in hand, they calmly left. They chatted and laughed, appearing relaxed, clearly very used to this kind of long journey.

"Group Leader, what’s your name? Now that I’m in the group, I can’t keep calling you that." Old Pavel brought his son over and immediately extended his hand, wishing to help carry the bag.

"No need, just call me Tang Zheng." Tang Zheng introduced the names of the three of them, and then his gaze fell on some adventurers, "Aren’t they carrying too much? How do they intend to fight?"

Old Pavel didn’t feel awkward because Tang Zheng refused. After all, he was just offering the courtesy. If he really had to carry the bag for him, he would have exhausted himself. Even children know not to waste energy when walking on snow.

"Those guys are all single, everything they own is in their bags, so naturally they have to take it with them. As for whether they get tired or not, once we get to the surface, you’ll know." Little Pavel explained, but his eyes were drawn to the grenade launcher, which then fell on the ammo pouch on the tactical vest, filled with envious desire.

This time, Tang Zheng left from the subway station exit, and saw those council soldiers setting up roadblocks for tax collection. Obviously, it’s not a cushy job. They were all tucked into corners napping, utterly desolate.

"Tang Zheng, you guys are here too?" Gao Wei was very happy to see his fellow townsman. He trotted over, shifting the Type 81 rifle he had been hugging in front of his chest to his back, and breathed on his hands to warm them up.

"Here, have a smoke to warm yourself up." Gao Yu also knew what having an experienced good soldier by his side meant, so he offered a cigarette to get in his good graces, "Where are Little Du and the three female models?"

"Thanks." Old Gao lit the cigarette and took a comfortable puff, then said, "I asked them to stay back. I came out first to scout the situation, and will make plans accordingly afterwards."

"Do you know what has happened to the others who left?" Gao Yu stamped his feet, the higher he went, the colder he felt.

"Urban Management and the peddler went into a cave, Chu Baichuan spent a clip to rent a house in the West District. Oh right, we’re also living in the West District." On seeing Gao Yu’s suggestive look, Old Gao quickly explained, "We haven’t done anything, those three female models were only seeking shelter, and there is nothing sexual going on. Little Du is a gentleman, don’t worry."

"Whatever happened to you guys has nothing to do with me." Gao Yu protested. He didn’t pay any attention to the three average-looking models who left. Of the twelve girls, Xu Biyun and Li Meilian were the most beautiful, but they couldn’t compare to Qin Yan. Gao Yu had set his sights on her, and as for Yin Shangwu, he dared not pursue her.

As these two casually talked, they didn’t notice the envious looks of the adventurers. Cigarettes were a luxury, even a few group leaders from the Parliament only occasionally indulged in smoking one. Yet they were puffing one after another, completely oblivious to the value.

Once they left the subway station, the raging blizzard that had been blowing all day had stopped. Even though the sun was hanging in the sky, it didn’t feel warm. The cold wind was like steel needles, stinging so much it hurt.

Tang Zheng tested the radiation with a Geiger counter and it slightly exceeded the safety limit. He sighed and had to take out a triple defense mask to wear. The cold sensation of the plastic immediately made him shudder.

"Damn, I’ll definitely prepare a hat for next time, and also polar camouflage." Gao Yu cursed, apparently suffering from the freezing cold.

Wasteland residents were already accustomed to this kind of low temperature, without any complaints. They pulled out their homemade snowboards in a hurry, placed them on the snow, put their bags on them, and pulled the rope to walk.

"Damn! why didn’t I think of that?" Gao Yu looked regretful and decided that the next time he earned some points, the first thing he would buy would be a high-capacity Space Backpack so that he could stash anything he needed.

Not only did Tang Zheng have a snowboard, but he also had prepared sleds. However, those things were too large and couldn’t fit in the tactical backpack. It would be suspicious if he suddenly pulled them out. Fortunately, Old Pavel had a snowboard, which saved him the trouble.

The following three days was a long trek; if someone fell behind in the team, no one would wait. The team members were all rushing on their journey, resting only five to six hours per day. Interestingly, the challenging environment had cultivated their strong physiques. Despite the intense marching, which had even exhausted Old Gao, they would be energetic again after a sleep. Their main food was black bread but it was rationed and they seldom indulged; they survived most of the time in semi-starvation except when they lucky enough to hunt wild beasts to improve meals.

"If these people were brought back to the modern era, they would all be material to be special forces," Old Gao mumbled softly from behind. "I’ve estimated that their physical constitution is twice that of ordinary people."

"Sure, those who are physically weak have been natural eliminated," Gao Yu replied, nibbling a chunk of chocolate, "I can’t believe what they would like after filling their bellies."

Tang Zheng wasn’t interested in their conversation. The bullets for the Gauss sniper rifle were too expensive, and he didn’t want to waste them. Thus, he practiced shooting with the M200 that he borrowed from Gao Yu. The principles of sniping were more or less the same. Over those four days, he fired over a thousand rounds and shocked the adventurers with his eagerness to waste supplies. ’How did such a wasteful guy survive in the past?’ they wondered.

However, Tang Zheng’s popularity surged over those three days, surpassing Luo Xiji to become the most popular member in the team. Who could be ungrateful when someone improved their meals with his hunting every day?

After shooting at a target a kilometer away, pulling the bolt and ejecting a shiny yellow cartridge, Tang Zheng quickly changed spots. Yet several wasteland survivors behind him had already started to scramble for the ejected cartridge. He was used to this weird behavior; after he said he didn’t need the cartridge, they began to pick it up.

"Little Tang, you have a natural talent for shooting," Old Gao looked back and said with a smirk, "Why don’t you use those auxiliary devices? The ballistic computer and weather tracking can be pretty useful because they can help you to aim more accurately at the least."

"If they broke, a gunman would not have anything to rely on but his own senses and experience," Gao Yu finally found a chance to brag, posed as a sniper and mentioned the guidelines that he read on the Internet.

From the fourth day, Tang Zheng frequently left the team and stayed in one place to practice shooting for about an hour. Then he rode his velociraptor to catch up with his team. He had made a good use of his time by putting the raptor away before his team could see him.

The dwellers of the Wasteland were surprised by Tang Zheng’s excellent physical strength and by the fact that he never fell behind unless he wanted to. After ’wasting’ nearly twenty thousand bullets, he finally became able to accurately hit a coin from a distance of one thousand five hundred meters.

By the sixth day, Tang Zheng switched to the Gauss sniper rifle. After all, it was the weapon he used frequently, so he needed to familiarize himself with it. Among the five types of bullets, the explosive bullets were the cheapest and therefore his first choice.

"I’m bored of shooting at a fixed target daily," Tang Zheng said, yawning on his velociraptor after his sense of novelty wore off. Suddenly, he heard a horrifying scream, followed by gunshots and human yells.

"Are people hunting nearby?" Tang Zheng immediately put away his raptor, ran under a fir tree, and crawled into the snow. He stretched the muzzle of his M200 out, peeked through the scope, and observed quietly.

Five minutes later, several mutants dressed in rags and furs entered his field of vision. They had packages on their backs and were running away in panic. They were obviously a family group, old and young. The strongest men carried children on their backs and equipped rifles on their chests, running frantically. The so-called old people were also just in their fifties.

Bang! A gunshot sounded, and a man in his forties fell onto the snow. The blood that shot out from his chest, contrasting with the white snow, looked particularly harsh.

There were intermittent screams and whistles. When the rag-torn adventurer team appeared in the field of vision, Tang Zheng understood that this was a team hunting mutants on the surface.

The gunshots kept resounding, and another man fell. The adventuring group intentionally avoided women and children. They would become their slaves - of course, they shouldn’t be killed.

"About twenty people." After a quick sweep of the opposing team’s composition, Tang Zheng aimed his gun at the adventurer who was running at the back. To make his trigger pull more flexible, he took off his cotton gloves.

The man in the scope had an anxious look on his face, obviously worried that others would snatch away all his spoils. Tang Zheng didn’t hesitate as he slowly moved the muzzle along with him. When the crosshair of the scope aimed at his chest, he pulled the trigger.

With a bang, a blood flower burst on the man’s chest. He fell onto the snowfield, and Tang Zheng instantly moved the muzzle to the next target.

Because he had used a silencer, and the adventurers were frantically chasing the mutants, they didn’t notice their companion being killed.

After another bang, the second unlucky guy was killed. Tang Zheng pulled the working mechanism and loaded the round. His hand was as steady as always, with no sign of shivering. Over the past few days, he had repeated this action tens of times. (To be continued... If you like this work, please consider voting at qidian.com. Your support will be my greatest motivation.)
