Chapter 303: Chapter 5 Strong Teammates
Thirty-two survivors were successively teleported into the Cretaceous Period within five minutes, deeply shaking them with the surrounding environment even before their bodies had fully transported.
Trees large enough for three or four people to encircle towered into the sky, obscuring the sunlight. The grass and fern plants on the ground were more than a meter high, enough to submerge a person. Everywhere was lush and vibrant.
The sky was blue and impeccably clear. Occasionally, huge birds would fly by, casting large shadows on the ground. Tang Zheng and the others instinctively crouched low, watching the giant bird disappear into the distance.
"Man, it’s hot here." The Caucasian overweight driver unbuttoned his collar and wiped the sweat off his forehead. Not just him, the other newbies were also in discomfort, their faces glistening with sweat from the unbearable heat.
"The Cretaceous Period had a unique climate, a greenhouse-state. The temperature here is at least ten degrees higher than the Earth’s current climate. Volcanic eruptions occur everywhere. The carbon dioxide content is four to ten times that of the present," casually explained the blonde woman holding her daughter. No sooner had she finished her sentence than the ground began to shake slightly, causing some people to lose balance and fall.
"Look over there, it’s a volcano!" The man holding a fishing rod pointed to the northwest. Through the trees, a column of black smoke could be seen, glowing with sparks as it tilted towards the sky.
"Stay calm, and be ready to run at any moment." Tang Zheng didn’t do anything unnecessary, like commanding those North American newbies. He just gave Little Lolita a nod, whispered a sentence, then continued to don his blue tight-fitting protective clothing. Although it looked awkward, an extra layer of defense increased his chances of survival.
"Your red protective suit looks quite nice. What grade of prop is it?" Maggie, standing next to Tang Zheng, couldn’t resist looking him up and down in admiration.
Tang Zheng appeared slim, not the type with bulging muscles. Yet when dressed in tight clothing, the power hidden beneath each of his muscles was noticeable. His body was as perfect as a stone statue carved by a master.
"A Grade S Firefly?" Leonard looked at Tang Zheng, eyes filled with envy when he saw him nod. "I remember it’s worth ten thousand points. But you’ve only survived four games. You’ve even enhanced your body. How do you have so many points to splurge?"
"Uncle can earn about 5,000 points per game," said Lu Fan proudly of her uncle’s strength. She took off her coat and also put on a protective one. Luckily, everyone’s attention was on Tang Zheng; otherwise, their envy would be uncontrollable if they noticed she wore a Firefly, too.
"David, now is not the time for this," Tang Zheng frowned, scanning the group. Other than Robert and a doctor who were arranging their equipment and firearms, everyone else wore curious yet worried expressions. They observed their surroundings, yet to grasp the danger they were in.
A woman dressed in a backless evening gown had just regained consciousness and was retching in the bushes, two waiters by her side looking after her.
"Right, everyone please stay safe and be alert," David shifted his gaze from Tang Zheng’s protective suit and began issuing commands.
Tang Zheng’s frown deepened. David was not up to standard. How had he survived six games?
"Uncle, here," Lu Fan handed Tang Zheng the M4A1. She then squatted down and whispered, "Uncle, David’s not qualified. You might as well be the captain."
Tang Zheng shook his head. He did not even know how to deliver a reminder. He didn’t fully understand David and his team’s personalities. If he said something now, it would completely undermine David’s authority and might even offend five Conquerors. Tang Zheng didn’t want to be ostracized. As long as the others didn’t die, it was fine. Regarding the safety of the newbies, he would leave it to fate.
"Captain, I think he’s asking you what we should do next," Maggie said. She noticed Tang Zheng’s grim expression, guessing that they might be dissatisfied with David’s response.
"Ah, of course, we have to find a way out. Is there any doubt?" David had a matter-of-fact attitude and grinned, patting Tang Zheng on the shoulder, "Don’t worry, we’ll all survive."
"You can call me Tang Zheng." Tang Zheng knew he couldn’t be grim forever, so he smiled. He then picked up the M4A1, pressed the button to remove the ammo clip, and checked the golden bullets. After confirming they were full, he began to inspect the gun.
Thirty seconds later, to avoid bullets jamming, he vigorously tapped the ammo clip on the butt of the gun. Then, he loaded the clip, pulled the charging handle to chamber a round, aimed, and familiarized himself with the feeling. Normally, he should have fired a few rounds to confirm the trajectory, but Tang Zheng worried it would attract wild beasts, so he had to abandon that idea.
Everyone watched Tang Zheng’s proficient process, their faces reflecting relief. Having a strong teammate increased their chances of survival. Only Danny and the beaten policeman still seemed upset. Then, like a light bulb switching on, everyone started checking their weapons.
Tang Zheng did not help Lu Fan adjust her gun, as it was too heavy and Lu Fan wouldn’t use it much because it would hinder her from running. All she needed to know was how to throw grenades. However, no space in their watches was wasted, and they kept them for emergencies.
"Uncle, look." Opening her backpack, Lu Fan once more admired the generosity of the Red Trojan Horse. Apart from an electronic map, everything else was ammo clips and hand grenades - over a thousand rounds. Compared to their pitiful three clips, the comparison was like night and day.
The Thunderstorm rifle, although powerful, had expensive bullets. So, based on the principle of saving money wherever possible, Tang Zheng used the M4A1. His five slots presently held an undamaged AK74 rifle with a drum magazine, a Thunderstorm rifle, plus a Bronze Sword and Double-handed Slaughter Axe. Because beasts of the Cretaceous Period were pitiful, the Demon-breaking Crossbow was removed: the slots were filled with M4A1 clips instead. Incompatibility of bullets was indeed a disadvantage.
After safely tucking away the electronic map, Tang Zheng slung the Carbine Rifle over his shoulder. He was not fussed about the extra weight, plus it allowed him to retaliate quickly against any danger.
Once all the preparations were finished, Tang Zheng let out a sigh of relief. Looking at the time on his wristwatch, he found that it had taken him less than three minutes. Meanwhile, Lu Fan was ready and started filming the beautiful scenery of the Cretaceous period with his DV camcorder.
"You just stick with the M41A, check out my weapons," Danny proudly patted the MG3 in his arms and the hand cannon on his hip, he finally got the chance to revenge Tang Zheng for earlier mishap.
Tang Zheng ignored him and headed towards the woman in the evening gown.
"Ha-ha, loser, he’s running away!" Danny whistled cheerfully.
"You’re the real fool, I bet he has other guns," Leonard ridiculed Danny, thinking his teammate was being foolish.
"Huh, are you guys using these crappy weapons too?" Danny was surprised to find out that even Maggie and the others were using M41A.
"Save points," David cut to the chase, "We’re all poor. Can we compare with those wearing firefly-grade gear?"
"But won’t our firepower be too weak? What if we can’t kill the dinosaurs? No, you are clearly slacking off!" Danny looked frustrated, circling around the three Conquerors, trying to persuade them.
"We don’t know how strong the monsters are yet, just make do with what we have for now," Leonard was growing frustrated, "Besides, if we all change our weapons, how will you be able to show off?"
"That’s also true." Danny scratched his head, felt relieved and then minced over to Natalie to butter her up.
"Need help? If you continue to delay like this, you’ll die," the woman in the evening gown had sobered up quite a bit and was asking the two waiters about the situation. Her face darkened at Tang Zheng’s words; no one likes to be cursed.
"You guys should stop worrying about her. If you don’t want to die, change your clothes fast," Tang Zheng looked around and noticed the only one who hadn’t changed was a woman named Jenny. Apparently, they were too shy to do so.
"Whatever, your lives are your own. But even if you don’t change, at least take these with you," Tang Zheng shrugged indifferently. He only said this to earn some goodwill. After a few of them would inevitably die, they would understand his intentions.
After finishing speaking, Tang Zheng turned to the blond mother and daughter, first took out a lollipop and handed it to the little girl who was only five years old.
"At least put the protective clothing on the child,"
Seeing Tang Zheng’s sincere concern, the young blonde woman nodded her head, and Tang Zheng immediately undressed the little girl and helped her put on the protective clothing.
"Mommy, the clothes are so tight," the little girl pouted, almost on the brink of tears.
Lu Fan’s smiling face appeared from behind Tang Zheng, "If you wear this, you’ll see Santa Claus in three days!"
"Really?" The little girl’s tears turned into laughter, full of curiosity all over her face.
Lu Fan nodded, secretly observing the mother, blonde hair, blue eyes, pointed chin, a typical Caucasian woman, whose appearance could be rated 72 out of 100.
"Tang Zheng probably doesn’t like this type, but how can I keep them away from uncle?" Lu Fan didn’t want Tang Zheng to be burdened with additional people, but she didn’t want to purposely spoil things either, which might lower her adorable image in Tang Zheng’s mind. So she showed great enthusiasm without being impolite.
"Oh, what about an accident?" Lu Fan had a sudden idea, drew the girl who was now dressed up, played with her for a moment, making her giggle, but accidentally tripped over and bumped into her own mother from behind.
The blond woman, who was developing a good impression towards Tang Zheng’s kind action, thought he was a nice guy. Besides, in this uncertain environment, she did need someone to protect her and her daughter. So she was using the excuse of being taught how to use a firearm to get closer to him. But just as she told him her name, Julia, she was sent tumbling to the ground by an unexpected force from behind.
Tang Zheng and Julia were squatting on the ground, separated only by a backpack. Seeing Julia fall, Tang Zheng instinctively reached out to help her up.
"Mommy, are you okay?" The blonde loli, who had climbed up from the ground, was scared and afraid of being scolded. Lu Fan, pretending to dust off the loli, wore a triumphant grin.
