Chapter 248 - 6: The Sealed Exit

Chapter 248: Chapter 6: The Sealed Exit

Boom, someone among the high school students couldn’t withstand the pressure and opened fire. In response, the 300 skeleton warriors began to advance like a group of enraged bulls, taking neat steps forward. The front-line soldiers with shields and rusty curved knives in hand kept beating their shields, making a clanging sound.

The Coliseum wasn’t that big, even on foot, it wouldn’t take more than twenty seconds for the two sides to make contact. Seeing the approaching skeleton soldiers that reeked of decay making them feel so close, the high school students quickly raised their rifles, attempted to shoot. Unfortunately, only a few of them fired bullets, none of them hit the mark, and the recoil sent the bullets flying into the air.

The Coliseum was filled with the sound of flying bullets, high school students covering their heads in fright, letting out shrieks.

After somebody started shooting rashly, Tang Zheng immediately moved to a spot three meters to the left of the high school students with Li Xinlan and the others, slightly distancing themselves. He didn’t want to be a human shield.

Tang Zheng didn’t refuse when a few female high school students ran over after hesitating at the sight of their firearms.

"Why aren’t you attacking? Do you want to watch us die?" Some students started shouting at Tang Zheng and others. Some pleaded desperately, hoping that they would lend a hand. However, without Tang Zheng’s command, even Zhang Hao remained silent and didn’t make a move.

"Tang Zheng, help them out." The Leopard Print Woman couldn’t stand it any longer. She thought of her son and pleaded with Tang Zheng. She believed that the skeletons wouldn’t be a problem if Tang Zheng made a move.

"Can’t I just observe their attack methods?" Tang Zheng muttered. He eventually gave up on the idea of allowing the high school students to test the skeleton soldiers’ combat strength, pulled out the Thunderstorm rifle, and fired a thunderball.

As expected, the Thunderstorm rifle, although an energy rifle, does not have the capability to kill the spiritual monsters. So, the thunderball hit the skeletons, obliterated instantly, only creating small holes when it hit the stone slabs, and the scattered stone fragments did not damage them.

"We’re in trouble now." Qin Yan test-fired ordinary bullets, but they also had no effect. Realizing their meager ammunition reserve, everyone’s complexion turned serious.

"I, Elder Lin, and Yin Shangwu will fire, others be on guard and conserve bullets." Tang Zheng instructed, picked up the AK74 rifle, aimed at the skeleton in front, knelt down on one knee to stabilize his body and started shooting.

The three rifles roared, the orange-red cross-shaped muzzle flame was particularly glaring in the dark. The bullets imbued with spiritual power flickered with a faint green light in mid-air, like fireflies in the dark.

Click, click, the skeletons that got hit in the head by the bullets fell down. However, those who were just hit in the ribs were still intact. This made everyone gasp in fear. However, the high school students had a glimmer of happiness on their faces because the skeletons had changed their direction of attack and were rushing towards Tang Zheng.

"I knew that firing would draw them over. But what are you students hiding for?" Tang Zheng roared in disappointment. The moment the skeletons stormed over, the students immediately scrambled away.

"Thank goodness, the high school students seeking shelter didn’t leave." After walking a distance of about thirty meters, Tang Zheng and his group only managed to kill a little over a hundred skeletons. Seeing that the remaining ones were about four meters away, some of the high school students started shouting again.

"Fire your guns, are you idiots?"

"Or you could give us some bullets."

Those students who didn’t know the situation were actually getting support from their peers. They thought that Tang Zheng and the others were holding back. After all, except for a few women, everyone else seemed too calm.

"Fire what? We only have so many bullets, do you want to use them all in one go? If anyone talks nonsense again, you can go and fight in melee." Zhang Hao was furious. "Am I your daddy? Why should I protect you?"

Suddenly, Tang Zheng found it nice having a bad guy like Zhang Hao. Seeing those high school students being scolded and not daring to retort, he felt a bit satisfied.

"You two shoot at those that escape, I’ll go and test their toughness." Since the monsters weren’t attacking fiercely, this was a good opportunity. Tang Zheng put away the rifle, took out the Bronze Sword and rushed forward.

This move made some female students scream out of worry. Yet, some others muttered words like "idiot", with Han Zifeng at the forefront.

Seeing Tang Zheng charging towards them, the front-line soldiers with shields skillfully swung their curved knives, intending to chop him into pieces.

Tang Zheng maneuvered the Bronze Sword to the right, parried their blades, and with a full-powered kick on the shield of a skeleton in front of him. Bang, it flew backward and collided with the others, disrupting the formation and creating an opening.

About a dozen skeletons broke from the formation and surrounded Tang Zheng, intending to hack him to death with random stabs.

"They just have the strength of an average adult with a hint of intelligence, but it’s not a problem," Tang Zheng held his AK74 with one hand, beginning a series of rapid shots aiming at their heads. This opened a gap among them. He then picked up the bronze sword again and started to chop left and right. This level A prop with both demonic break and armor breaking attributes was pretty good. It could easily cut through the skeleton’s shield and bone structure, with a green luminescent glow around the incision, giving it a somewhat aesthetic look.

With a nudge of Tang Zheng’s toes, a wood talisman covered with iron sheet bounced into the air. He caught it and smoothly slapped it on a skeleton’s head. With a crash, the skeleton’s upper body shattered completely.

"With monsters like these, there’s no pressure at all. But where’s the exit?" Zhang Hao looked at the coliseum enclosed by stone walls in all directions. His face shrunk like a bitter gourd. He soon yelled at the students, "Don’t just stand there, help me find the exit!"

Three minutes passed, every last skeleton had been destroyed by Tang Zheng, and their scattered bones started to sink into the stone slabs, making it look like they had never existed at all.

"The camp light can’t last much longer. Xu Guanlin, tell your classmates to light these resin torches and place them on the holders in the stonewalls," Tang Zheng pointed at the torches lit up by the camp light and shouted towards Xu Guanlin. As long as he wasn’t a fool, he wouldn’t refuse.

As expected, Liu Jiamei was discontented with Tang Zheng appointing Xu Guanlin, but the class monitor held him back. Xu then started assigning tasks to his classmates.

There was a holder in the stone walls every five meters where two torches could be stuck into. When the entire coliseum was filled with the crackling sounds of burning torches, light began to fill the space. One could generally see everything in it, though it was somewhat dim and oppressive like a winter morning before dawn.

"Isn’t this a closed-off space? Wouldn’t we suffocate?" Han Zifeng yelled out, intending to question Tang Zheng’s authority and prove him inefficient.

"There are ventilation holes on the roof and numerous ones on the walls too. Haven’t you felt a slight airflow?" Bai Guo gave Han a scornful look. He finally found someone more moronic than himself.

"Unfortunately, those holes are only as big as our fists. We can’t possibly squeeze through," admitted Pang Meiqin, disliking the cold and dim environment. The echo of heavy breaths made it even more unsettling.

Tang Zheng also started to examine the coliseum himself. His hand rested against the walls as he slowly moved around the exterior circle. Every meter or so, he pushed strongly against the wall a few times, but the wall wouldn’t budge. He even tried fitting his dagger into crevices between the bricks, but they were too tight. He could only leave behind a few slight scratch marks.

"What if we can’t find the exit, are we going to be trapped here until we die?" The panic sunk in, and the students’ complaints grew louder.

In an enclosed and depressing environment like this, survivors tend to perceive time as passing slowly. It’s especially hard to bear when there are no findings that could aid in their survival. They grew more pessimistic, and their fundamental problems began to surface as time went by.

"I’m hungry, I wish we had something to eat."

"I’m hungry too, but I still have a piece of chocolate. Let’s share it," said a girl who hadn’t yet understood the gravity of their predicaments. She divided her snack amongst her close friends.

"Thank you, Qianxue. You are our savior," exclaimed some of the girls cheering and praising Li Qianxue. This made her blush and she shyly lowered her head.

"Those idiots, let them fast for a day, and then they’ll know the value of a piece of chocolate," Zhang Hao watched the high school students still enjoying their camaraderie, eager to see them turn against each other for a morsel of food. As the Silver Trojan hadn’t set a specific time, no punishment squad was dispatched to the scene, which meant this escape from Demon City could be a long battle.

"I wonder how many female students would throw themselves at me for my supplies," thought Zhang Hao as he smiling lewdly. But his smile turned into a bitter grimace, "The goody-two-shoes Tang Zheng probably won’t let me do this. Wait, this should be a fair trade. He has no reason to stop me. Right, this guy is overly cautious. He likely brought more than a week’s worth of food, he might offer it to the students. Nevermind, it doesn’t matter. There are over forty students. A little bit from each would still be a vast amount. I still have a chance."

As he watched Tang Zheng continued to search for the exit in earnest, Zhang Hao decided to first eat his supplies, keeping his stash for the girls.

"Ha-ha, I am so cunning," Zhang Hao smugly licked his lips, and began scouting for good-looking girls amidst the students.

"What should I do? I need to go to the toilet?" A girl pleaded anxiously to her companions, squeezing her legs together. She wasn’t the only one facing this predicament.

"Hold it in! We can’t possibly relieve ourselves in front of so many people, can we?"

"We can form a human wall!"

"But what about the sound?"(To be continued. If you like this book, please come to qidian.com and vote for it. Your support is my biggest motivation.)
