Chapter 116: A Chaotic Dinner
Chapter 116: A Chaotic Dinner
Jin Yuexin stood there frozen, pale as paper, her eyes still wide from the sudden chaos. Her lips parted slightly, trembling, as if trying to breathe but unable to pull enough air into her lungs.
"Yue?" Su Meilin gently touched her shoulder.
The moment their eyes met, the composure Jin Yuexin had been clinging to shattered. She collapsed into Meilin’s arms, small hands gripping her blouse as she sobbed, her voice raw and broken.
"I—I didn’t mean to... I didn’t know—" Her words were a jumbled mess, quiet and stuttering, barely more than whispers between choked gasps.
"I was... I was just scared... nanny—nanny is sick and I couldn’t... I didn’t know who to call—"
"Hush, it’s okay now. It’s okay, Yue." Su Meilin whispered gently, rocking her softly like a mother would. "You did the right thing."
Zhao Yiming let out a long sigh as he sat beside them, his elbows resting on his knees, watching the girl with quiet frustration, not at her, but at the bastards who pushed her this far. She was too soft for this world.
Too kind and yeah vulnerable. If they were coming late, he would be sure Yuexin would now be homeless.
He opened his mouth to say something comforting, but before the words could form, the familiar ding of the system chimed in his mind.

• "You’re safe now. We’ll protect you. You don’t have to carry this alone."
• "Stay at our place. We’ll take care of you and protect you from that bastard."
Zhao glanced at her, still crying in Meilin’s arms. He didn’t hesitate to choose at all, after all this was death and live situation.
Aunty Liu heart attack and Su Jinhe helping Yuexin was too good to be accidental. It might have been the Golden Earth scheme, just like what happen to Madam He.
"You can stay with me for a while," he said softly. "Ww will protect you from that bastard. You shouldn’t be alone right now. It’s too dangerous."
Yuexin lifted her head slowly, eyes red, cheeks wet, but her lips trembled as if trying to speak.
Meilin nodded in agreement. "Yeah, stay with us. I’ll help take care of you. I’m not letting you face any of this alone, alright?"
There was hesitation in Yuexin’s eyes, but only for a moment. Then she nodded slowly, rubbing her eyes with her sleeves like a child.
Just as they were starting to calm down, the door to the hallway opened and a nurse peeked in. "Family of Liu Xiuying?"
"Yes!" Yuexin quickly stood up, wiping her face again.
"The patient has regained consciousness," the nurse said with a warm smile. "She’s weak, but stable. You can see her now but only two people at a time, please. She’s still in Resuscitation Area."
The trio exchanged glances before walking together toward the emergency room. The hallway felt too long, the air too heavy.
But right now Jin Yuexin look braver than ever, she need too. After all happened, she couldn’t just keep crying and helpless, at least she need to raise her head to meet her sick nanny that take care of her, her only family left.
Yuexin was the first to enter the room.
The sight of Aunty Liu hooked to machines, her frail body buried under thin hospital sheets, nearly broke her again.
She rushed to her bedside and fell to her knees, clutching her hand as she tried not to cry and be strong in front of her.
"I’m sorry... I’m so sorry... I should’ve done something better..."
Aunty Liu opened her eyes slowly, her voice weak but full of warmth. "Silly girl... what are you apologizing for?"
"This... this is my fault..." Yuexin whispered. "I—I don’t know anyone to call for help. Nanny, your condition worsen because of me!"
"It wasn’t your fault," Aunty Liu said firmly, even as her voice cracked. "And I’m here now still kicking. So you better stop blaming yourself Xin’er... I will be sad if you keep doing that."
Yuexin finally giving in. She couldn’t hold hear tears anymore as it keep flowing through her like a fountain. She then burying her face against the bedsheet.
Zhao Yiming stood just outside the curtain, fists clenched at his sides. Meilin beside him had a hand over her chest, her brows tight with sadness.
Watching this scene of fragile love and raw grief only stoked the fire inside him.
Golden Earth. Su Jinhe.
They wanted to use innocent people like chess pieces?
Not on his watch.
Zhao Yiming closed his eyes, swearing silently: ’I will burn your little empire to ash before I let you harm another person I care about.’
[Ding!]

Zhao Yiming sighed and covered his face, cursing the deity inside, ’Damn it, God! Stop being a pervert just once!’

The next two days passed in a blur of cardboard boxes, packaging tape, and the sound of wheeled carts scraping across tiled floors.
Zhao Yiming had underestimated just how many things Jin Yuexin had.
For someone who rarely left her apartment, she had a fortress of personal treasures: sketchbooks stacked high, an entire cabinet of painting supplies sorted by color, brand, and emotional attachment, and her prized digital drawing rig that took both Luo Yanyu and Han Queying to carry without tripping over the cables.
Then there were the plushies. So many plushies. It was like moving a small, extremely shy dragon hoarding pillows instead of gold.
They didn’t take everything. Just the essentials: clothes, her massive computer setup, some of her finished paintings, and her small bookshelf of art references.
Jin Yuexin was adamant not to leave her works behind, and Zhao respected that, even if it meant his apartment now looked like an artist’s nest exploded in one corner.
It took them two full days, with help from Su Meilin and the others. By the end of it, even the bodyguards were sweating.
But seeing Yuexin smile—tired but proud—made it worth it.

That evening, they had a dinner party.
The round table was filled with a strange mix of people. Su Meilin took the host role seriously, sitting at the center, pouring tea with grace.
Zhao Yiming, still in his casual shirt from moving duty, lounged beside her like a tired wolfdog.
Ryan Lihua looked far too elegant for the room, sipping from her cup with a sharp glint in her eyes, while Luo Yanyu leaned back, halfway drunk and already complaining about the lack of meat.
Han Queying, radiant as always, was taking photos of the table setting with an artist’s appreciation.
And finally, Yuexin sat between Meilin and Lihua, still slightly stiff in a ruffled pale dress Meilin had chosen for her.
Her hair was freshly brushed, but she was clutching her napkin like a lifeline.
"Thank you... for letting me join," Yuexin said softly, her voice barely above the clinking of plates.
She was now more courageous to express herself, to talk normally around people. Probably, because they already bond when moving her things.
"Oh hush, you’re family now," Meilin said with a smile. "Right, Yiming?"
Zhao nodded, chewing his food. "Yeah. This apartment needed an artist-in-residence anyway. And someone to properly judge Meilin’s terrible taste in living room décor."
"Excuse me?" Meilin shot him a glare, smacking his arm.
Ryan Lihua, a busy bee who clear her schedule just to have dinner with them, raised a brow, smirking.
"You mean your taste, Mr. Landlord?"
Jin Yuexin giggled softly at that, covering her mouth quickly when they all turned toward her with amusement.
"You’re really cute," Luo Yanyu said bluntly, leaning over the table.
"Like a bunny trying to pretend it’s a cactus. But tell me, can you fight?"
"Uhm... no?" Yuexin looked horrified.
Ryan Lihua sighed, "Told you not to drink that much, Yanyu. You have a weak tolerance of alcohol."
"I just want to make sure our friend group has survival skills," Luo Yanyu huffed.
"If one of us collapses from stress or gets poisoned, I’m learning acupuncture."
Everyone laughed. Even Yuexin. Though what she said was right, Golden Earth wont leave them alone just like this.
Jin Yuexin loosened up, little by little. She passed dishes to Ruan, helped Meilin serve dessert, and even answered Queying’s sharp questions about digital brushes and illustration software.
Her voice was still soft, her hands still fidgeting under the table, but she smiled more tonight than she had in months.
"You’ve got a good eye," Han Queying said, tapping her glass. "If your next Chapter’s cover art has Yiming shirtless again, I’ll double your likes."
"QUEYING!" Yuexin’s whole face turned scarlet.
"Wait, what?" Meilin turned to Zhao with horror and amusement. "You posed shirtless?!"
"I didn’t!" Zhao defended, "She just... drew it that way!"
Yuexin covered her face with both hands as the table burst into laughter again.
It was chaos.
Warm chaos.
And in the corner of the room, Zhao Yiming watched them all—his strange, mismatched family—and for a rare moment, he allowed himself to relax.
The war with Golden Earth wasn’t over. But tonight?
Tonight, they were safe. Together.
