Chapter 818: Which one is more foolish?

Meanwhile...

"Bad news?"

Dane’s brows lifted at the sound of Ivy’s familiar voice behind him. He turned to see her striding towards him, a brief smile on her lips.

"The look on your face suggests it is bad news," she observed, stopping a few paces away. "Everything alright?"

"Of course." Dane smiled, gripping his phone to his side. "What brings you here, Miss Wei?"

"Don’t worry. I’m not here to declare my feelings again."

"That’s not... what I meant."

Ivy’s smile widened as she chuckled, glancing at the children playing in the orphanage playground. "Just kidding," she quipped, her eyes shifting to Dominic, and the volunteers engaged in charity work; some played with the children or read a book to them while others were feeding them. "I just thought it’s been a while since we caught up. So, here I am to catch up."

"Or were you avoiding the charity work?" Dane teased monotonously, earning a swift glance from her.

"Why would I do that?"

"You’ve never been keen on having children," Dane remarked, turning his attention to the politicians jogging in the playground. "I was surprised to see you here earlier since, from what I know, you’re not fond of kids."

"Who said I don’t like kids?"

Dane raised an eyebrow, focusing on her. "Am I mistaken?"

"Not entirely." Ivy shrugged, pursing her lips and glancing at the children. "I can’t say I like them to the bottom of my heart and that the thought of them excites me, but it’s not that I dislike children. I just don’t see myself capable of having my own."

"What’s changed?"

"Nothing." She tilted her head, meeting his gaze. "Nothing’s changed, Mr. Zhang."

"Then why are you here? If you neither like nor dislike them, why did you tag along today?"

"Hmm..." Ivy hummed, scanning the heartwarming scene in the garden. "To be honest, I’m not sure. When I heard about Dominic’s charity work and read the articles to give him a great image, I felt compelled to join. Maybe I was curious. Or that I want to see if he’s regretting this change of career."

"Are you considering shifting to politics, too?"

"Over my dead body," she chuckled, shaking her head. "I’ve built my career for too long to let it go. I can’t explain why I came. Maybe I’ll figure it out later."

A brief silence fell between them as Dane studied her profile. He sighed softly, averting his gaze.

"Were you hoping he’d be here?" Dane broke the silence calmly, trying to help her figure out her intentions for today. "Unfortunately, Tiger’s still suspended. It might be after the election before he returns."

"I’m aware," she replied without looking at him. "If I wanted to see him, I could just call. He seems to show up even when uninvited. It’s as if he senses when I need company because he’s always there when I’m feeling lonely. So, I can confidently say I came here not because of him."

Her expression softened at the thought of Tiger. Despite his outward demeanor, Tiger was surprisingly tender and romantic. Just the thought of him brought a radiant smile to her face. Dane observed her profile and sighed, turning away.

"Did he explain why he was suspended?" he inquired, catching her glance from the corner of his eye. "Miss Wei, I’m genuinely worried. Tiger’s situation is complicated. It’s best if you know what’s going on and —"

"I know." She smiled, meeting Dane’s gaze as he turned to face her. "Regardless, I want to be with him."

"It’s dangerous."

"I’ve faced countless death threats before."

"Miss Wei." This time, Dane squarely addressed her. "I don’t think you grasp the severity of the situation. This is more than empty threats. If you knew —"

"Mr. Zhang," Ivy interjected with a smile before Dane could continue. "I appreciate your concern, but I’ve made my decision. I care for Tiger—I love him. Despite the risks and complications that came along with these feelings, I can’t ignore how my heart flutters whenever I see him."

"I’m afraid you don’t understand —"

"I might die," she halted him again, not circling back to explain her comprehension of the situation. "Painfully and cruelly. He warned me. I might disappear, vanish without warning."

This time, Dane was speechless, merely staring at her in disbelief, contemplating how she could smile despite knowing the danger. How could she speak so calmly despite the threat shadowing her relationship with Tiger?

"You might be right, Mr. Zhang. Perhaps I haven’t fully grasped the gravity of this and its danger." Ivy nodded reassuringly. "But what I do know is that Tiger will fight for me, shielding me from harm. Adversities come whether we invite them or not, but it’s comforting to know that amid these dangers, someone is willing to hold a light in this dark world we live in."

Her smile widened a bit more, nodding at Dane. "This time, I want to be the light for him; something that will guide him through this darkness. Am I scared? I’ve always been afraid of the dark. But what terrifies me more now isn’t the darkness itself, but the fear of losing him within it."

"That’s my current fear," she added, turning her gaze back to the playground. She pressed her lips, smiling, and taking a deep breath. "Foolish as it may sound, that’s what I want to do. Whatever the future holds, I know for sure that I won’t regret this."

Dane kept his eyes on her profile, then her curved lips, and back to her soft eyes. Why was he so surprised? Ivy had always been this way, someone who detested regret. She strived to avoid it, often going to great lengths to ensure she had no regrets in everything she pursued. It was the reason she didn’t stop pursuing him despite the countless rejections from him.

’How foolish...’he thought, sighing as he shifted his gaze away. ’Though I’m not so sure which of us is more foolish, Miss Wei.’
