Chapter 1016: Lost
Meanwhile...
"I’m about to lose my mind," Primo gasped in horror, sitting in the backseat, on their way to wherever they were going. He didn’t ask about their next destination. He didn’t have the energy. All he could think of was that they came to Interpol’s territory and left unscathed.
How did that happen?
Primo slowly set his wide eyes on the woman beside him.
"I’m amazing," Hera quipped, casting him a quick look. "Is that what you’re going to say?"
"Uh..." Primo nodded as if that was the truth. "You’re amazing."
"I know, so don’t drool."
"How did you know they would let us go?" he scooted closer to her like an excited kid. "Or was it just a gamble?"
Deborah, who was in the front passenger seat, glanced over her shoulder, interested in knowing Hera’s answer. It was the same for Hunter. Although Hunter initially worked as a government agent, Ram sacrificed him for his selfish reasons. He couldn’t trust the place he came from since his boss sold him out.
Even so, they were curious.
Did Hera just gamble her life along with theirs? Or was she truly sure they would let them go?
"I see you’re all curious." Hera chuckled in amusement. "I don’t gamble if I know I’d lose."
"So, you knew he would let us go? How?" Primo followed up quickly.
"Why are you asking me?" she leaned away a little. "You sound like Moose whenever he is asking about my vault."
"What?"
Hera waved. "Fine. I’ll let you one of my secrets so you become smarter."
Primo instantly frowned. Wouldn’t she be able to live her life without insulting others?
"I know Elliot Dunkel," she confessed. "And before you start with your nonsense, he’s not one of my people. He is just someone I put in that spot."
"Huh?" The three furrowed their brows, confused. Elliot wasn’t one of her men, but she was the one who put him in that position. That didn’t make sense to them.
Hera slowly gazed at the window as if using this momentary silence to reminisce. "Back then, I thought if I had the person lead the Interpol under my wing, it would have been nice. After all, I asked Wolf to crawl his way to the ladder."
"But then, I saw him," she continued. "The other candidate. Smart, calculative, good-looking."
"Oh, come on." Primo scoffed. "Don’t tell me you fell in love with him?"
"Falling in love is a stretch." Hera snapped her eyes back to Primo. "More like... I wanted him to win."
"Huh?"
"Elliot Dunkel... I wanted him to win and see if he can change things," she added as her eyelids dropped. "Can he be the first person who will fight the monsters without becoming one? Or would the darkness he fights eventually extinguish the flame he was carrying?"
The corner of her lips curled up into a smirk, setting his eyes back to Primo. "It would be an interesting thing to watch."
Silence followed Hera’s remarks as the three processed her answer. In other words, she was curious. What a crazy woman. She changed her mind about putting a person under her helm at the top of the Interpol, just because she was curious to see how Elliot handled things.
One might say she was dumb, but others might disagree. If anything, it showed her confidence and control in power. Or perhaps it showed how she could manipulate her own ending by getting arrested or killed by the person of her choosing.
"You’re crazy," Primo blurted out under his breath.
"I was and still am. I’ll take that as a compliment." Hera chuckled. "Thank you."
She took a deep breath and leaned back, closing her eyes. What she told them was the truth, but not the entire truth. One of the reasons that gave her the confidence Elliot would let them go was because of Dominic. Dominic had been in contact with them; it was a long story, but her husband was skillful in creating connections.
Dominic ascertained Elliot was just like what she expected him to be.
’Dom...’ she thought, staring out of the window with a somber look in her eyes. ’What are we going to do now, love? Since I’m back in this body... I am no longer the biological mother of our children. I don’t think we ever talked about that before. We didn’t even consider it.’

Meanwhile...
"They were going to move up the inauguration," Bear announced, looking back at the backseat. "They were just waiting for you."
Dominic fixed his tie and then buttoned his blazer. "Good."
"Things will happen," said Bear, staring at the backseat. "Are you sure you’re going to do this?"
Dominic slowly snapped his eyes to the front passenger seat, holding Bear’s eyes squarely. His lips parted, but then he shut them again.
"Mhm," he hummed a short tune, looking at the window. "Even if we want to stop it now, we can’t. Let’s get it done and over with."
Bear nodded in understanding, peeling his gaze from the backseat to the front. A glint flickered his eyes, staring ahead in determination. His jaw tightened, entering battle mode as he mentally and physically prepared himself.
’This might be the bloodiest inauguration that would happen,’ he thought. ’I’m not letting this guy die.’
Meanwhile, Dominic kept his eyes on the window, staring at the flashing road.
"Bernard," called Dominic. "If Hera wakes up, what do you think of the first thing she will do?"
"Take down Dragon and regain control over the Reapers?"
Dominic rocked his head. "And after that?"
"I’m not sure." Bear shook his head. "She might rush to you and make sure you’re okay."
A moment of silence descended on the car as Dominic didn’t respond. Bear looked back once more, brows furrowed.
"You disagree?" asked Bear.
"She won’t come to me," Dominic murmured, eyes still on the window. "Not when she’s Hera. She got too many enemies with that face and coming to me... is akin to putting me and our children on death row."
Bear lowered his gaze, aware of that. He only said what he said because that is what Hera would do if she were in Heaven’s body. But Hera was deeply aware of her situation as Hera Cruel.
"She might not see me anymore," Dominic added quietly, catching a building on the side as they entered the city. Their car slowed down, entering the building’s underground parking space before he continued, "I feel lost. What should I do, Bernard?"
His eyelids dropped as the lights inside turned dark. "How am I supposed to tell our children the woman we loved is someone else without ruining their innocence?"
