Chapter 89: Chapter 89

Layla’s eyes lit up with excitement, her previous confusion forgotten in an instant as she practically bounced in her seat.

"Wait, so I’m getting powers like yours?!" she asked eagerly, leaning forward.

Then, as if something had just occurred to her, she tilted her head curiously. "By the way, that reminds me—what are your powers, Watts?"

Watts smiled at her enthusiasm, shaking his head slightly in amusement. But before he could answer, something suddenly clicked in his mind.

His body tensed for a fraction of a second, his golden eyes widening slightly before narrowing as if he had just uncovered a missing puzzle piece.

His entire demeanor changed as he turned swiftly to Liz, urgency seeping into his voice. "Um, Aunt... What were Mom’s specific powers?"

Liz blinked at him in mild confusion but answered anyway, "Aah, she was an Esper. Her powers were psychic."

The moment those words left her mouth, Watts visibly relaxed, letting out a slow breath as if that confirmation had put something at ease.

But then, as if realizing something else, his body stiffened again, and his gaze snapped back to Liz.

"What level?" he asked, his tone more serious now.

Liz furrowed her brows slightly, thinking for a second before answering. "We have a different way of cultivation on our planet," she began, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

"But I think her level is the same as what you call Level 5 here."

She said it so casually, like she was discussing the weather.

Watts, however, was not calm.

His eyes widened in pure shock, the color in them glowing slightly as his entire body tensed. His usually composed demeanor shattered completely.

"Wait—" he almost choked on his words. "What the fuck?! Are you for real?!" he shouted, standing up abruptly.

Liz simply smiled in amusement at his reaction, while Layla, still utterly confused, glanced back and forth between them before asking to no one in particular, "Okay, what am I missing?"

As expected, she was ignored.

Watts, still trying to process the bombshell he had just received, ran a hand down his face. "Fuck!" he muttered before turning to his aunt again. "How old are you guys?"

Liz gasped dramatically, placing a hand on her chest as if he had just committed a great offense. "That is very ungentlemanly of you, Watts," she said with an exaggerated pout. "Didn’t I teach you never to ask a woman her age?"

Layla, despite her confusion, burst out laughing at Liz’s playful reaction, and even Watts found himself momentarily smiling, though he still looked frustrated.

But he wasn’t about to let the question go unanswered.

"No, but seriously," he said, his expression still expectant.

Liz finally relented, tilting her head slightly as she hummed in thought. "Hmm, not sure really," she mused. "All I know is that your mother should be, like... 113 years—"

Layla gasped loudly before she could even finish. "WHAT?!"

But Liz, clearly enjoying the reactions, didn’t pause. She completed her sentence smoothly.

"...older than me."

She smiled sweetly as if she hadn’t just casually shattered their understanding of reality.

Watts had his mouth slightly open, mouthing a silent "Fuck."

Layla, on the other hand, looked horrified.

She turned to Liz with a pitiful expression, as if she had just heard the most tragic news in the world. "Please tell me you’re 30," she begged, looking at Liz with wide, hopeful eyes.

Liz, unable to help herself, burst into genuine laughter.

She shook her head, chuckling, before reaching out and patting Layla’s head affectionately.

"Oh, sweetheart," she said, her voice full of pity.

Layla groaned and buried her face in her hands.

Meanwhile, Watts was still trying to wrap his head around everything.

A Level 5 psychic.

A being of that level... died in an accident?

He let out a short, bitter laugh and shook his head. "So a Level 5 being died in an ’accident’... Fuck them."

Liz simply looked at him and shrugged. She didn’t argue.

Watts rubbed his temples in frustration before looking at his aunt again. "So why didn’t you mention this earlier? And why do you say it like it’s no big deal?"

Layla, who still looked like she was hearing rocket science, just blinked at the conversation, barely keeping up.

Liz smiled again, as if the answer was obvious. "It’s no big deal, really," she said nonchalantly. "My family isn’t exactly short of stronger people, so..."

Watts groaned. "I need to think through everything again, it seems," he muttered under his breath.

Then, as if flipping a switch, his expression hardened again. His gaze sharpened, glowing slightly, before he finally spoke.

"Anyway... time for a power-up."

Watts exhaled slowly, then looked between the two of them before finally speaking.

"Anyway," he began, "I managed to upgrade my race into a very superior one with some good shit."

The casual way he said it made it seem like he was talking about buying a new pair of shoes rather than rewriting his very existence on a fundamental level.

But before either of them could react, he continued, "And in the process, I became a Progenitor, so I can turn others."

Silence.

Layla’s reaction was almost immediate. Her eyes widened like a child being told she was about to receive the best gift in the world.

"Wow!" she exclaimed, practically vibrating with excitement. "Like how vampires turn humans into vampires?!"

Watts smirked, crossing his arms. "Exactly," he confirmed. "Only I don’t have to, you know, bite your neck."

Hearing this, Layla’s enthusiasm only grew. She actually bounced in her seat slightly, eyes shimmering with intrigue. "That’s so cool!" she muttered to herself, looking as if she had just discovered her new favorite thing in the world.

Liz, however, did not share the sentiment.

Unlike Layla’s excitement, Liz’s face had darkened with a deep frown. Her brows furrowed as she stared at Watts, her posture suddenly tense.

"You..." she started slowly, her voice carrying a heavy weight. "You managed to upgrade your race to the point of becoming a Progenitor?"

Watts, noticing her sudden shift in mood, nodded. "Yeah."

Liz’s expression didn’t change. If anything, it only grew more serious. "How?"

Before Watts could answer, Layla chimed in, seemingly unbothered by the gravity in Liz’s voice.

"Does it matter?" she asked, tilting her head. "I think it’s a good thing, right?" she added with a bright smile, as if trying to lighten the mood.

But Liz wasn’t having it.

She turned to Layla with an expression that instantly shut down her optimism.

"It matters." Her tone was sharp, unyielding. "Upgrading one’s race is... impossibly difficult."

Layla blinked, her previous enthusiasm fading as she saw the sheer seriousness in her aunt’s eyes.

Liz continued, her voice carrying an undeniable weight.

"One needs upgrade resources, which are extremely rare—even in the entire galaxy. The kind of resources that civilizations would go to war for." Her eyes narrowed. "So no one does that. Not unless they’re desperate."

She let that sink in for a moment before adding, "And I don’t even believe that selling the entire Earth could afford all the needed resources."

Layla’s lips parted slightly in silent shock, her brain trying to process what Liz was implying.

"But..." Liz went on, her voice now edged with something darker, something dangerous. "Most people who do upgrade their race don’t do it the normal way."

Watts knew where this was going.

"They turn to darker powers," Liz said, her voice now cold. "They upgrade their race, yes—but at a huge price."

Her gaze hardened, locking onto Watts like she was trying to see through him.

"So, Watts," she said, her voice stern, unyielding. "How?"

Now that Layla had some idea of the weight of the situation, she turned to look at her brother, worry settling in her chest.

Watts sighed. He knew Liz wasn’t going to let this go easily.

"Calm down, Auntie," he said, trying to ease her suspicions. "I didn’t go for the... dark powers, as you call it."

Liz’s eyes narrowed further.

"Bullshit," she stated, her voice sharp.

"I know thousands of different powers. Even the most powerful ones can’t just upgrade a race. Only a handful of powers in existence are capable of doing such a thing, and I refuse to believe you have one of them—"

Her eyes gleamed with something challenging.

"—or you wouldn’t still be a Level 1."

Watts closed his eyes and sighed again, rubbing his forehead. He was trying to decide what to say to satisfy her.

Finally, he exhaled deeply and simply asked, "Ever heard of the Aeonborns?"

Liz’s entire face changed.

Her expression froze for a second, but her eyes... her eyes held something dangerous in them now.

She frowned deeply. "How do you know about them?"

Watts simply looked at her. His face gave away nothing. He didn’t speak.

They held eye contact for a long, tense moment.

Then, Liz’s expression shifted again.

Her eyes widened slightly in realization.

And when she finally spoke, her voice was quieter—almost... disbelieving.

"Your father..." she murmured.

But before she could say anything more, Watts quickly cut her off.

"Let’s... not talk about that now, okay?" he said firmly.

Liz stared at him for a moment, as if debating whether to push further. But then, she sighed heavily.

There was sadness in that sigh. Regret. But she didn’t press the issue.

She simply nodded.

Layla, completely lost as usual, snapped.

"You know, guys, ever since the start of this conversation, I’ve been left out more times than I would really appreciate."

She crossed her arms, pouting slightly.

Watts, seeing her frustration, let out a small chuckle and smiled. "Sorry, sis. I promise I’ll tell you everything after this."

Layla, still annoyed, narrowed her eyes but eventually sighed. "Fine," she muttered.

Liz took one final deep breath and then exhaled.

"Okay then," she said, her expression resolute. "Let’s do this."
