Chapter 78: Chapter 78
Tessa’s concern grew with each passing second. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she might have been tricked or abandoned.
Her professionalism dictated she stay calm, but doubt gnawed at the edges of her confidence.
From the moment he had disappeared, her unease was growing.
Watts reappeared at the entry point of the hidden city, his sudden materialization startling Tessa, who stood waiting in the same spot he had left her.
Her gasp was audible as her wide eyes locked onto him.
She quickly composed herself, though the lingering traces of worry in her expression betrayed her earlier thoughts.
"You... You’re back," she stammered slightly, then straightened, folding her arms to regain her professional demeanor. "Are you okay? I was beginning to think... well, never mind."
Watts gave her a faint smile, slinging his bag more comfortably over his shoulder.
"I’m fine," he said with a calm assurance. "Ready to meet whoever it is that’s waiting for me."
Tessa let out a small sigh of relief and returned his smile.
Tapping the earpiece on her right ear, she informed the command center, "My customer is back. He’s fine."
Her voice was clipped and professional, though her earlier nerves seeped through just slightly.
Watts, hands in his pockets, watched as she turned back to him, her earlier unease replaced with a confident expression.
"Follow me, please," she said, gesturing with a slight tilt of her head.
As they began walking, Watts’ keen ears picked up faint chatter from her earpiece.
Though muffled, it was enough for him to discern the command center’s inquiries about his sudden disappearance.
"Where was he?" one voice asked urgently.
Tessa’s response was almost a whisper, meant only for them. "I have no idea," she admitted, frustration creeping into her tone.
She clearly wasn’t used to being blindsided.
Watts didn’t comment on it, but his sharp hearing caught more than just the command center’s conversation.
As they moved through the waiting area, he noticed several supposed passengers watching him from the corners of their eyes.
Watts caught the subtle tension in their postures, the way their eyes darted towards him before quickly averting.
Their earpieces were nearly invisible, but he noticed the faint glint under the right light. It was clear—they were watching him, albeit poorly concealing it.
They feigned disinterest, flipping through digital tablets or sipping from cups of steaming drinks, but their focus was unmistakable.
"He’s back," a man muttered into his own hidden earpiece, thinking he was discreet.
The faintest tilt of his head and the way his fingers lingered near his temple revealed his intentions to Watts.
Another woman nearby, dressed casually yet sitting stiffly upright, was clearly monitoring his every move.
She didn’t say anything aloud, but her gaze briefly flicked to her own concealed comms device before snapping back to her screen.
Watts let out a quiet chuckle to himself, the corners of his lips curling upward. He didn’t need his extraordinary eyes to see through their ruse; their behavior was as obvious to him as the midday sun.
Agents, no doubt sent to keep tabs on him. It was amusing, really, how poorly they masked their surveillance.
Yet he made no move to address it. For now, he was content to let them watch, to let them think they were the ones in control.
He felt their stares, their suspicion, but chose not to react.
It amused him slightly—how little they knew of what he’d done in the last few minutes.
Still, the thought of meeting someone from the Mijjory family put a small smile on his face.
"Something funny?" Tessa asked without turning around, sensing his amusement.
"Just admiring the security measures," he replied vaguely, his voice laced with a touch of humor.
Tessa glanced back briefly, her expression skeptical, but she didn’t press him further.
She led him through the expansive entryway, where sleek, modern architecture blended seamlessly with ornate touches of old-world design.
The hidden city’s entrance was nothing short of a marvel, and it was clear that whoever operated this place spared no expense in showcasing their wealth and influence.
Eventually, they reached a corridor lined with doors.
At the end of it was a particularly luxurious office, its polished wooden double doors standing out amidst the otherwise metallic and glass-heavy surroundings.
Watts noted the intricate carvings on the doors—a depiction of swirling clouds and roaring dragons, a nod to traditional art forms—and the faint hum of energy emanating from within.
Tessa reached the door and then with a hand scan, the door was opened.
Watts had expected to arrive at an office or something, however what he didn’t expect was the door was just a tunnel to the other side.
As Tessa led him through, he found himself in another busy place exactly like the airports of the normal cities, only that it was way more luxurious.
He was led through as he admired the designs and sophistication.
They then reached a certain check point.
"Wait here for a moment," Tessa said.
Watts nodded, adjusting his bag on his shoulder. As she stepped forward to talk to the check point officers, he caught another snippet of conversation from her earpiece.
"Is he cooperating?" the voice asked, clearly referencing Watts.
Tessa responded with a terse, "So far, yes."
Her hand reached for the biometric scanner beside the machine, activating it and then said some incomprehensible words to the woman responsible.
As the device flashed green and the doors that led to the other side began to slide open, Watts took a moment to glance around.
This check point had a lot of people, you pass through a certain machine and then given a card as you continue.
And there were a lot of these devices, probably to cover for many people, and from his observation, this seemed to be the check point for those who are visiting for the first time.
As for how he found out, well Black box was already in action.
Some of the "passengers" were still watching him, though they were more discreet now that he was so close to his supposed destination.
One of them—a man with sharp features and a seemingly casual posture—gave the faintest of nods to someone unseen, likely relaying a silent update.
Watts’s smile returned. Let them watch, he thought. Let them wonder.
Tessa stepped aside, gesturing for him to follow. "This way," she said, her voice maintaining its professional tone.
He followed her inside among the sea of people, his boots making soft thuds against the polished floor.
Watts took it all in silently, his expression neutral but his mind calculating.
He could feel the weight of expectations pressing against him, both from Tessa and from the unseen eyes still monitoring his every move.
Whatever lay ahead, he knew it would be critical to keep his guard up and his intentions hidden.
For now, though, he remained composed, ready to meet the person who had summoned him to this place.
