Chapter 77: Chapter 77

The atmosphere in the grand office shifted as Mr. Chen turned his attention fully to the uninvited guest. His eyes, sharp as blades, narrowed in annoyance as he folded his hands atop the mahogany desk. The glint of irritation was unmistakable.

"Would you die if you knock?" he asked dryly, his voice cutting through the silence like a knife.

The man who had entered unannounced, now known as Gabi, only chuckled.

There was an effortless audacity in the way he carried himself, lounging back in the chair he had commandeered, his legs crossed and propped carelessly on the edge of the pristine desk.

He didn’t respond to the rhetorical question, choosing instead to turn his attention to the other occupant in the room: Ms. Lin.

She was a striking young woman, her petite frame draped in an elegant silk dress that shimmered in the soft lighting.

Her sharp glare at Gabi’s intrusion was meant to convey indignation, but Gabi found it only added to his amusement.

"Ms. Lin," he began with a mock bow of his head, "from such a distinguished family, no less."

His grin widened as he added, "And yet, here you are. With an old man over a thousand years old, or is it more. Tsk, tsk. What would your fiancé think?"

The jab landed, and Ms. Lin’s glare turned icy. "Watch your mouth, Gabi," she snapped, her voice low but brimming with venom.

Her reaction only seemed to delight Gabi further.

He leaned forward, resting his chin on his hand as he studied her with feigned curiosity.

"Oh, don’t look at me like that," he teased. "I’m merely an observer. A commentator, if you will. But you must admit, it’s quite scandalous."

"Enough." Mr. Chen’s voice was calm but carried an unmistakable authority.

He glanced at Ms. Lin with a reassuring smile, his tone softening as he said, "Give us a moment, my dear."

Ms. Lin’s frown lingered, but she relented with a huff. As she turned to leave, Mr. Chen’s voice slipped into her mind through their shared link:

I’ll make it up to you later.

You better, she replied in kind, her mental voice carrying a hint of warning.

When the door clicked shut behind her, the playful light in Gabi’s eyes flickered. For a brief moment, his expression seemed almost thoughtful. Then he broke the silence with a dramatic sigh.

"You always know how to ruin my fun, Chen," Gabi said, shaking his head.

Mr. Chen ignored the quip. His expression remained serious as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "How did the operation go?"

Gabi’s grin returned, albeit tinged with mischief. Instead of answering directly, he gestured around the room.

"Quite the office you’ve got here. Nice view. Though I imagine it’s not quite as... stimulating as your other activities."

Mr. Chen’s jaw tightened. "Focus, Gabi. I’m not in the mood."

"You never are," Gabi quipped, but when Chen’s eyes darkened further, he raised his hands in mock surrender. "Fine, fine. Spoilsport."

He leaned back, a more genuine smile tugging at his lips. "You want to know about the operation? I’ll give you the highlights: a certain someone has been quite busy."

"Busy?" Mr. Chen’s frown deepened.

Gabi tilted his head. "Tell me, Chen. Where exactly is the catalyst right now?"

The question caught Mr. Chen off guard. His expression shifted ever so slightly. "What are you getting at?"

"Oh, nothing much," Gabi replied, inspecting his nails. "Just tell me what I need to know."

Mr. Chen looked at Gabi for a moment, "My people are monitoring him, he is at the city’s entry point. He just landed."

"Well, isn’t that interesting, what about his... family," Gabi quipped, clearly enjoying the suspense.

Mr. Chen, now feeling frustrated almost shouted, "Get to the point, will ya?"

"Okay okay, just thought you’d like to know they’ve been... relocated." Gabi smiled widely.

Mr. Chen stiffened. "They’ve been what?"

"Rescued, to be precise," Gabi clarified, his tone light, as if discussing the weather.

He leaned forward, his smile growing sharper. "They’re gone, Chen. Snatched right out from under your nose."

For a moment, Mr. Chen said nothing. He processed the information, his mind racing. "When?"

Gabi shrugged. "Not too long ago. I’d say it was a rather elegant operation. No fireworks, no mess. Just... gone."

"Impossible."

"Oh, it’s very possible," Gabi countered, his grin widening. "In fact, it already happened. And before you ask, no, it wasn’t them."

Mr. Chen’s hands tightened into fists. "That wasn’t supposed to happen yet."

"Ah, yes, the grand plan," Gabi said with a mockingly reverent tone. "You and your meticulous timelines. And yet, here we are. Your little scheme, thrown off schedule. How tragic."

Chen’s mind raced. This deviation wasn’t a mere coincidence. "He has help," he said, more to himself than to Gabi.

"There is no way he would be able to be at the city’s entry and simultaneously rescue his family..." Mr. Chen analyzed, trying to come up with a plausible theory.

"Oh, by the way, rescued every subject of lab 99, erased every information, without being seen. Impressive, right?" Gabi smiled.

"The fuck?" Mr. Chen lost his cool.

Lab 99 maybe one of the failed facilities of the Order, but even then, taking every subject and erasing all the information was unbelievable, especially with the fact that he wasn’t seen.

That was practically impossible for someone of the Catalyst’s existence level, unless he had huge help.

And plus it wasn’t part of the plan.

"That settles it then, he has huge help," Mr. Chen composed himself.

Gabi’s smile turned enigmatic. "I beg to differ."

Mr. Chen smiled at Gabi, and after a few minutes of listening to him, he now knew what he was dealing with.

He had to admit he had really underestimated the kid, but now he knew, after all that was also part of the plan, to know more about his abilities.

Though it was supposed to happen a bit later according to their estimations, but hey, this works too.

The Order knew more about the catalyst’s powers than even himself, they knew he might be weak evolution wise, but his powers can allow him create miracles.

So even if they could just send a very overpowered figure to capture him, which would save them time, they needed to know the extent of his understanding of his powers.

Because if he really did understand his abilities fully, then it would be almost impossible to capture him.

But good thing is that he seemed to only know the superficial knowledge, and best of all, he had forgotten about his past.

He didn’t remember a bit.

And that..... was a flaw that the Order would use.

Oh and by the way, they had left him a simple surprise with his family that he would learn later, the moment he did.... he would come to them.

That is how simple the plan was, if they can make him come to them willingly, why waste their resources.

All they had to do now was wait.
