Chapter 52: Chapter 52
A/N: I have made a little clarification about the change in his abilities so for those who might want to know more, please re-read Chapter 47.
.............................
Watts found a clearing where most of the trees had been uprooted, leaving a jagged expanse of bare soil and shattered trunks.
It was a hauntingly serene place, the devastation a stark reminder of his own destructive presence.
But then again, this was going to be the place of birth for a new and high tier life. A new life was going to be born here.
He knelt in the center of the clearing, cradling the egg in his hands. It radiated a faint warmth, pulsing like a tiny heartbeat, fragile yet stubborn.
When he had decided to hatch the egg, he had asked the system what to do and found out he had to give his soul and mind energy and maybe a bit of vitality until the egg was full.
Then it would hatch without a hitch.
But then the system informed him of something that almost drove him crazy with anger and frustration.
The system’s notification had been clear and unforgiving:
[WARNING: Although the egg has not been physically affected by Death, its essence has regressed. Upon hatching, the result will only reach 50% of its intended potential.]
Why did he have to experience all this for fucks sake. After this fucked up situation, he had thought he would find solace in this fella.
But then fate had to play a trick on him.
"This isn’t fair," he shouted.
Seriously, was luck even doing anything or was this karma catching up to him after he had killed trillions of of beings? Was that it?
But did the egg have to be brought into this, I mean it had nothing to do with this destruction.
But then that is when it hit him, had any of the dead people and other beings been part of him changing abilities? But they were affected none the less.
And all he could do right now was feel lucky that this didn’t happen on earth.
So now he had to look for a way to reverse these effects from the egg, and he had just the thing.
Determined, Watts set the egg down gently in the clearing’s center and began to carve runes into the soil with his bare hands.
Yes, a formation. And even if his other powers were sealed, the lucky this is that runes weren’t powers, but knowledge.
This meant he could still use them. And now he was going to use this long forgotten knowledge to do what he wanted.
The symbols came instinctively, each curve and line flowing as though they’d been etched into his soul.
He worked feverishly, creating a formation that stretched all across the clearing in intricate spirals and loops.
It was an equivalent exchange rune—a relic of ancient power. Its principle was straightforward: offer something to the higher beings and receive something of equal value in return.
And Watts already knew what he would offer.
His life force.
Since it was infinite, thanks to his immortality, it seemed the only fitting currency.
Plus higher beings like life force and vitality better than anything else, it could be considered one of the most expensive currencies.
Reason being, immortals were as rare as they could get, and no matter how powerful beings are, their life spans have an end.
And no one would be willing to waste the life that would probably help them to get more powerful hence increasing life spans, but well, Watts was a cheat.
But for a moment, doubt crept in.
What if this was another mistake? What if he only made things worse? But as he looked at the egg, he felt a strange calmness wash over him.
"Damn it," he whispered, placing his palm on the rune’s central glyph. The formation lit up, glowing with a brilliant blue light.
Energy surged through him, pulling at his very core as if the rune were siphoning pieces of his existence.
Suddenly, his vision blurred, and he found himself in an endless void. A formless being of immense presence loomed before him.
The rune didn’t directly contact the higher being as this could kill the user with the immense pressure these beings have.
Higher beings, we are talking about existences of level 7 and above but with immense powerful bloodlines, now like dragons.
So only the will of the user was taken to the higher being, and whether it accepted or not was up to it.
"I offer my life force," Watts declared, his voice steady despite the overwhelming pressure of the being’s presence. "In exchange, I want the egg to hatch and reach its full potential."
"200 years" it simply sent he thought to his mind. Not a word more.
After all for beings like these, even resurrecting people was child’s play, however overuse of this rune may lead to side effects that Watts wasn’t ready to face.
Watts felt the energy drain from him, leaving him breathless. When he blinked, he was back in the clearing, the rune formation dimming.
Before him, the egg began to glow, its surface cracking as tendrils of light spilled out.
The shell shattered with a soft, melodic chime, and from within emerged a creature of breathtaking beauty.
The bird was small, no larger than his palm, its feathers shimmering with hues that shifted between gold and blue, as if it were made of light itself.
Its eyes were like twin galaxies, deep and mesmerizing. It chirped softly, its voice a delicate song that seemed to heal the very air around them.
Watts looked at it and for the first time in what felt like for ever, he let out a smile. A genuine smile.
He walked to it and picked it up in his hand as it chirped beautifully and poked his palm with its little beak.
It was as if this was his son.
[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]
[Host, it is female.]
’What?’ he had to fight the urge to turn it upside down and check it. But this feeling of like an overprotective father stopped him.
It was a great feeling that his heart really needed after all that happened.
"Nova," he said, "Your name will be Nova." he smiled.
The little bird flapped her tiny wings and chirped again, hopping onto his shoulder with an almost mischievous energy.
Nova nuzzled against his cheek, her warmth a comforting contrast to the cold remnants of the storm. Despite everything, she radiated hope—a reminder that life could still thrive amidst destruction.
Watts stood and began to walk through the forest, Nova perched happily on his shoulder.
The forest was a shadow of its former self, trees charred and rivers dried up, but small signs of resilience were already appearing.
A single flower blooming amidst the ash, the faint trickle of water finding its way through cracked stones.
As he wandered, the voice of the world’s core echoed in his mind, firm yet weary.
"You must leave," it commanded. "Your presence brings only destruction. Do not return."
Watts stopped, glancing back at the desolation he had caused. He couldn’t argue. The world was right.
Maybe he could bring more destruction if he really remained behind.
So with a heavy heart, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the switch for the Multidimensional Time Machine.
But deep down, he was afraid to go back to earth, because if what happened on this galaxy happened to earth, then he would lose a lot.
Not just friends and family, but even his sense of humanity, as he would never forgive himself if it happened.
Nova chirped, as if sensing his hesitation, but he steeled himself and activated the device.
In an instant, the forest dissolved into a swirl of colors, and when the world came back into focus, he was standing in the same room he had left on Earth.
Not even a second had passed.
Nova chirped as she looked around in confusion, then she pecked at his neck as if asking where they were.
"This is home Nova, this is home." he smiled as he rubbed her little head gently with his finger.
He then lowered himself onto the floor, closing his eyes as the memories of the other world flooded his mind.
The chaos, the destruction, the lessons—it all felt distant and surreal, yet the weight of it lingered.
He opened his eyes, shaking his head as if to clear the fog, and pushed himself to his feet.
Leaving the room, he entered the living area where Evelyn sat, her expression lighting up with surprise seeing him out.
However the moment her eyes met his, her face shifted to one of shock and unease.
"Watts... you feel... different," she said, her voice hesitant.
He could perfectly understand, after all he was now the embodiment of death. And no matter how much he tries to hide the aura, others will always feel somehow threatened.
Death isn’t a simple thing after all.
He offered her a small, tired smile. "I’ve been through some things. But don’t worry, I’m still me."
Evelyn didn’t seem convinced, her gaze lingering on him with a mix of wariness and concern.
But then when her eyes fell on Nova, who was also quietly looking at her, all her worries went up in smoke and her eyes shined brightly in excitement.
"Where’s Gwen?" he asked, cutting her out.
He knew girls were cute freaks, the moment they see cute things, its like they run mad. And apparently, its the same even for ghost girls.
Evelyn shook her head. "I don’t know. Can I hold it, a bit. Please?"
Her voice small her eyes not leaving Nova even for a second.
’Sigh’ I couldn’t help but sigh.
However I didn’t have time for this, it was time for me to rescue my family and then do what he had failed to do all this time.
He was done of his enemies going for his family every single time. Time to change that.
