Chapter 45: Chapter 45
Watts stood frozen, his breath coming in shallow bursts. His legs felt as though they might give out beneath him, but his mind churned relentlessly.
The wolf’s voice still reverberated in his thoughts, its ancient and cryptic warnings looping endlessly.
"You think you came here to take... But this world has rules, boy. And it has guardians."
What did it mean? Guardians? Rules?
The planet had been mysterious enough with its sentient flora and unpredictable temporal anomalies, but now it seemed he’d awakened something far more dangerous—and far more intelligent.
Watts lingered in place, his usual confidence shattered. Since gaining his powers, he’d never felt this weak, this vulnerable.
The encounter had left him shaken—a reminder of how small he truly was in a world brimming with unfathomable forces.
He felt a sense of disappointment in himself. He felt anger that he couldnt even talk back.
He felt a sudden sense of urgency that he had never felt before. This incident had acted as a wake up call.
It showed him that there were people out there that were too powerful they could kill him with a thought.
It was a reminder of how much strength was essential to survive in this world. And now his luck had given him a reminder.
Watts clenched his fists. The wolf’s presence had left him feeling raw and exposed, and not just physically.
That voice—it had spoken with a terrifying certainty, as though it knew more about him than he did about himself.
However right now his only thought was to get the egg as soon as possible. Because according to the wolf’s words, this egg was more than a mere egg.
He had to get it no matter what.
So with a thought, his metallic wings unfurled, shimmering as nuclear energy surged through them.
In a flash, he launched skyward, the sonic booms trailing behind him like ripples on a stormy sea.
The landscape below blurred into insignificance as he hurtled toward his destination.
His figure blurred as he sped forward with his cybernetic eyes analyzing everything from above at an impossible speed.
And in just an instant, he had travelled hundreds of kilometers and arrived at the nest directly.
He didn’t care about the surrounding beasts now, no. All he did was cover up his track with runes.
He hadn’t wanted to use them just so he can test his luck, but look where it had landed him.
Watts landed with a thud, his metallic wings folding behind him as his boots touched the soft, pulsating ground of the nest.
The air here was different—charged with an energy that made his skin tingle, even through his cybernetic enhancements.
The landscape seemed alive, shifting subtly as though the very environment was aware of his presence.
The nest loomed ahead—a vast, pulsating structure of intertwined roots and crystalline shards, glinting under the alien sky.
At its heart lay the egg, cradled in a web of glowing tendrils, its surface rippling with energy that seemed to warp time itself.
It radiated an otherworldly energy, its surface swirling with patterns that seemed to mimic the flow of time itself—expanding, contracting, and fracturing like the ticking of some cosmic clock.
Watts’ enhanced eyes locked onto the egg, scanning its surface for weaknesses or potential traps.
His neural interface displayed countless warnings—unstable energy readings, gravitational anomalies, and faint traces of an unknown force field surrounding it.
But none of that mattered now. His focus was singular: retrieve the egg and finish his mission.
As he took a cautious step forward, the ground beneath him shifted slightly, emitting a low hum.
The nest was alive—reacting to his presence, analyzing him as much as he was analyzing it.
He paused, unsure if he should proceed. His fingers twitched, ready to activate his energy shield at a moment’s notice.
Suddenly, a voice echoed in his mind—soft, melodic, yet filled with an undeniable authority.
"You came too soon, little spark."
Watts froze. It wasn’t the wolf’s voice this time, but something else entirely. This voice felt ancient, maternal, and vast, as though it belonged to the planet itself.
"You seek the keystone, but you do not understand its weight. This is no prize to be won, no treasure to be claimed."
Watts clenched his fists. "I don’t have a choice," he muttered aloud, his voice strained. "I need that egg."
The tendrils around the egg began to glow brighter, their movements growing more erratic. The hum of the nest intensified, reverberating in his chest.
"Need... or want?" the voice questioned, its tone tinged with sorrow. "You rush toward power without understanding its cost. The wolf warned you, and yet you press on."
"I don’t have time for riddles," Watts snapped, his frustration boiling over. "If this egg is so important, why is it unguarded? Why not stop me if I’m such a threat?"
I mean, with how powerful these guys were, if they didnt want him to come even near the egg, then he wouldnt.
But what frustrated him was that they were toying with him, it was so obvious and they didnt even try to cover it up.
The voice fell silent for a moment, and the air grew heavier, almost oppressive.
"Do you truly believe you are unchallenged?"
And before Watts could respond, the ground beneath him split open, and a blinding light erupted from the cracks.
Out of the light emerged a figure—a mirror image of Watts himself, but with subtle differences.
His double’s cybernetic enhancements were more advanced, his movements more fluid.
This version of Watts had an unsettling calmness about him, as though he carried the weight of countless lifetimes.
The duplicate stared at him, unblinking, and then spoke in a voice identical to his own.
"You shouldn’t be here."
Watts stepped back instinctively, his eyes narrowing. "Oh for fuck’s sake, the hell are you now?"
The double tilted its head, a faint, knowing smile curling at the edges of its lips.
"I’m you—the version that failed, that refused to listen. And I’m here to ensure you don’t repeat my mistakes."
Watts’ mind raced. Time dilation, overlapping memories, alternate versions of himself—wasn’t this more of a movie than reality?
But this wasn’t just a hallucination or a trick of the planet. This was real. His own future self had become his adversary.
"Oh God!" he murmured.
The future Watts raised its hand, and a surge of energy crackled around it.
"You think strength is your answer, but it’s your crutch," the double said coldly.
"This world doesn’t care how powerful you are. It will bend you, twist you, make you destroy the very things you swore to protect. You don’t fight for survival, Watts—you fight because you don’t know how to choose."
Before Watts could react, his double launched forward, faster than he thought possible.
However, at the last second, he managed to create a rune barrier that barely with stood the attack as the fight broke out in the nest.
And unfortunately, the nest was big enough to accommodate this.
Their blows collided with an earth-shaking crack, shockwaves rippling through the nest and sending shards of crystal scattering like deadly shrapnel.
Watts barely managed to deflect a blow aimed at his chest, the sheer force of it driving him back.
Each strike wasn’t just physical; it was a brutal confrontation with his own fears and failures, each one reflected in the cold precision of his double’s attacks.
He was struggling to even bloke the attacks yet he knew the other guy had more strength to spare.
In short, the future him was holding back, and a lot.
The egg pulsed with each blow, its energy resonating like a drumbeat of impending disaster.
Cracks spiderwebbed across the crystalline nest, and the entire structure groaned as though on the verge of collapse.
Watts’ chest tightened—if the nest shattered, the cascading energy could rip through the planet’s fabric itself.
And as the battle raged on, Watts knew he had to make a choice. He couldn’t keep fighting himself—literally or figuratively.
He needed to find another way to claim the egg without destroying everything around him.
But could he trust himself to make the right choice, when even his own future self stood against him?
