Chapter 88: Chapter 88 - Arriving Back
"About the failed transmission, Lady Zoe..."
"Rex’s men had actually requested me to create a communication jammer along with his men after Lady went into the gate"
"It was to stop any unwanted interference"
"His men seemed to trust me somewhat, maybe because of his command"
"The jammer was improved by me to ensure that no one could intercept our signals"
"We needed to prevent anyone from taking advantage of a situation, especially with the problems in the camp but the real reason for it should be..."
The real reason was clear. Makar’s voice grew quieter, as though reflecting on how far Rex had planned since before.
After everyone who went in the gate came back, the communications were restored but Makar now knew that it was instead done to target files instead based on the Dominic’s chat with Samantha.

Rex stood off to the side, waiting for the last bits of business to wrap up. Now that everything was finished, he was ready to go back to his barony. As he stood in silence as he looked at his personals who were packing up things, a faint sound of footsteps approaching caught his attention.
He turned, his gaze falling on none other than Zoe.
"Brother Rex," Zoe began, her voice steady but sincere.
"Are you leaving already?"
"Yes"
She looked a bit sad as she looked at his people who were moving as well.
"I just wanted to thank you for everything"
"I... I still have a lot to learn, especially as a lord."
Rex let out a brief smile before looking over to her people who were scattered about, also packing things up.
"Understand your people more"
Rex said, his tone slightly distant as if offering wisdom without directly addressing the intention of his words. Zoe frowned slightly, trying to process his words.
She wondered if it was a comment about Makar and the earlier events or if it was something else, something she hadn’t fully understood yet. She glanced in the direction Rex was looking, where her people were. As her gaze swept over them, she felt as if she had realized a bit of what he intended to say.
Just then, one of Rex’s personals approached, bowing slightly.
"Lord, everything has been packed up and is ready for us to leave."
Rex nodded.
"I’ll leave now" he said, his eyes briefly meeting Zoe’s before he turned to walk away.
Zoe seemed as though she wanted to say something but hesitated. Her lips parted, but the words didn’t escape her mouth. Rex was about to leave when, just as his footsteps took him a few paces away, she finally found her voice.
"Could I... borrow your phone for a moment?" she asked
Rex stopped his tracks and didn’t think much and handed her his phone. He assumed she simply wanted to add her number to keep in touch. He didn’t mind exchanging numbers with Zoe especially since she was also Sarah’s best friend. It was something rare. The creature called Sarah didn’t have many friends.
He watched Zoe as she tapped a few things on the screen. She didn’t say anything, just focused on the task at hand. He stood there, his thoughts drifting, only half paying attention.
Once Zoe was finished, she handed the phone back to him.
"Thank you," she said.
"We’ll meet again"
With that, Rex left and went into his vehicles. Looking at Zoe, who was waving at him, he also waved back at her before entering the vehicle. After she couldn’t see Rex’s figure, she also left her place going back to her personals.
Before long, the campsite was nothing but just a background, which he couldn’t see anymore. Rex couldn’t help but feel that something was amiss. He took out his phone, flicking it open. But as soon as he unlocked the screen, his eyes widened in surprise.
The background picture on his phone had changed. Instead of the usual, bland wallpaper, there was a new photo, a beautiful girl with vibrant red hair smiling softly at the camera. It was unmistakably Zoe.
He didn’t expect her to do this but he could only let out a soft chuckle which interested his personals who were somewhat further away. They didn’t ask what it was.
Rex looked into his contacts to see that the same picture was also added into the contact profile.

The room was dimly lit, casting long shadows over the two figures standing across from each other. The woman rested her elbow on the table, her fingers lightly tapping the surface as she stared intently at the tablet in front of her, waiting intently.
The glow of the screen illuminated her face, highlighting the smile that lingered on her face despite the tension hanging between them. However, what she wanted to see didn’t happen.
Her fingers swiped across the tablet, seemingly unfazed by the failure she was witnessing.
She exhaled softly, a sigh escaping her lips, but the smile never left her face. It was as though she’d still expected that things to fall apart at some point despite the chances.
"The plan failed," she said, her voice calm but carrying an undeniable undertone of amusement.
The man across from her was the exact opposite of calm. His posture was rigid, fists clenched tightly on the table, his eyes narrowing in frustration as he watched her with a mixture of disbelief and anger. His lips curled into a frown, his jaw tight with irritation.
"Even if it failed, why did you do that?" he demanded, his voice rising.
"That was the only person who made it that far in!"
His anger was palpable, the tension on his shoulders evident as he tried to make sense of it all. He had believed in this plan, he had placed his trust in her and now everything had unravelled, leaving him feeling betrayed and helpless.
The woman didn’t even look up from the tablet as she responded, her voice smooth and unconcerned.
"Relax," she said with a soft chuckle.
"There are plenty of ways to do this"
"I just wanted to have a little fun"
"Will you relax a little?"
Her words were dismissive, almost playful, as though she were toying with him. Her gaze remained fixed on the screen, unfazed by his outburst. She didn’t seem to share his frustration at all.
"This isn’t some game," he said, his voice sharp.
"This is work"
"You knew what was at stake"
At last, she finally looked up from the tablet, her smile still in place. She met his gaze, unfazed by the fury in his eyes.
"I know exactly what’s at stake," she said softly, her tone light, almost teasing.
"But sometimes, it’s better to let the cat out of the bag," she added with a shrug, her fingers casually tapping away nonchalantly at the tablet.
"Even if it’s been used, there’s no turning back"
"The damage is already done"
The man froze for a moment, hearing her words. He let out a deep sigh, rubbing his temples.
He understood what she meant now. The plan might have failed, but in a way, the purpose had already been served.
The truth was out, and no matter how much they tried to salvage the situation, the consequences were irreversible.
He leaned back, his frustration giving way to a reluctant understanding.
"So, it’s too late to fix it," he muttered, more to himself than to her.
The woman simply smiled, her eyes twinkling with a mixture of amusement and satisfaction.
"So you let it burn"
He sighed and said.
"Bingo," she said, her tone cheerful despite the failure that had happened.

When Rex finally arrived back at his barony, the familiar sight of the land stretched before him, and he couldn’t help but let out a deep sigh of relief.
Despite the fact that he had only been away for a few days, he looked around, taking in the view, feeling an odd sense of nostalgia. While his aunt’s house still held a special place in his heart, this barony was slowly becoming something he grew fond of.
But more than anything, what he missed the most wasn’t the scenery nor the barony itself, it was Ayana.
As the vehicle he was in neared the gate, Rex’s eyes locked on the figure waiting there. She stood near the entrance, her bright smile lighting up her face as she saw the incoming vehicles. She expected many things when meeting back with her master again after these few days, but this wasn’t something she did expect,
"I want to drive"
She paused for a moment, her fingers lingering on the door handle.
"Master...."
But similar to last time, she had no choice but to let Rex take the wheel. Last time, it had been because of her light injury. But this time, there was no injury, no reason other than the intense gaze she was seeing from her master.
As Rex started the engine, Ayana’s gaze wandered over to him, her mind clouded with a mix of thoughts. The fiery intensity in his eyes wasn’t to the driving, but something else.
A rush of excitement fluttered in her chest as she realized what could be waiting for her when they arrived back at the mansion. She clenched her legs as her heart skipped a beat as she glanced at Rex.
