Chapter 84: Makar’s Explanation (Chapter-84)
After stepping through the gate, Rex and Zoe emerged from the glowing rift, their gaze sweeping over the camp. The familiar faces of their personals, as well as the others who had remained behind, turned toward them. Some were relived while some were curious whereas a few were wary however, all of these were focused on the group, especially the two figures, Rex and Zoe.
Among the crowd was the researcher, the very one that gave them a lecture as well as the head researcher from Zoe’s camp. His face was filled with guilt, his eyes darting around as if trying to avoid their gaze.
Rex, noted the researcher’s discomfort, but he said nothing. Instead, he gestured to his personals to settle the group down, directing them to their positions.
As they moved to prepare for the next steps, one of Rex’s personals, who had been stationed here, came up to him and whispered something in his ear. Rex nodded slightly, a smirk crossing his face as he processed the information.
Once everything was settled, the group made their way to the main tent. Inside, Rex, Zoe, and the researcher, whose name was Makar, gathered around the table. Makar was the top researcher from Zoe’s camp, a respected figure in both camps but his discomfort was still present as he began to explain what had gone wrong .
"There was an error"
Makar began, his voice steady, but his eyes darted to the side as if reluctant to admit his failure.
"One of my students miscalculated the readings"
"Normally, a gate will have a set position for teleportation, but the readings from my student were incorrect"
"Normally, a gate would have a specific position of teleportation meaning it should appear at a certain location"
"However, the problem lies in the fact that this wasn’t a normal gate at all"
"The readings from one of my subordinates were incorrect"
Zoe’s gaze hardened slightly, but she refrained from saying anything immediately. Rex leaned back in his seat, swirling the juice in his cup,
"You’re saying it was a mistake by one of your students"
"And the readings from your camp were off from the beginning?"
Zoe looked embarrassed and guilty as this was her camp which was in the wrong.

{Flashback}
After both camps had arrived at the rendezvous, when the gate readings had first been divided between Rex’s camp and Zoe’s camp, it was clear that Zoe’s camp had a clear advantage in research. The split was 70 to 30 with more readings in favour of Zoe’s camp. Most people would say that less work better but not for these researchers
Makar the main researcher of Zoe’s camp looked down on the researchers from Rex’s camp. He had a high opinion of himself, as a researchers of his stature should have.
And while he didn’t outwardly show disdain for Rex or Zoe, he felt that his own students were far more capable than those from Rex’s camp.
He had hoped to adjust the split to an 80, 20 or even the readings of the entire gate for his camp. After all, gates were rare around here, and the readings they collected were valuable.
Therefore after the readings had been done, Makar had been reviewing the readings in order to find fault in the ones given by Rex’s camp.
However, something felt wrong. He believed it might have been due to the less competent researchers from Rex’s camp, but when he checked their readings, they were perfectly accurate. Sighing, he thought little of it.
Later, when Lady Zoe and Lord Rex prepared to enter the gate, Makar still felt uneasy. Looking at the swirling gate,
’What is this unusual feeling’
He went over the readings one more time in order to ease his uneasiness, this time including his camp’s data. His eyes widened as he saw the error that had been made one of his students had made a mistake, however this small mistake was all it took to read the entire gate wrong. Panicking, Makar rushed out of his tent, but by the time he reached the entrance of the arena, it was too late. He saw the two figures Lady Zoe and Lord Rex step into the gate. His legs gave out beneath him as he realized what had just happened.
But then, just as he was about to crumble into despair, two more figures appeared before him. Makar’s first instinct was that it would be Lady Zoe and Lord Rex returning. However, when he looked up, his hopes were quickly dashed.
Standing before him were two unfamiliar faces, though their stature and presence immediately struck him. The two men were from Lord Rex’s camp, they were the ones that were left in the camp and he thought these were he weaker ones because they had been left at the camp but feeling the aura leaking out from the two of them, he couldn’t help but feel a bit frightened.
"Lord Rex and Lady Zoe are inside the gate"
Makar stammered, but the two figures didn’t react the way he expected. Instead, they looked at him with cold eyes, unfazed by his words.
"Doesn’t matter," one of the figures said coldly.
"You need to cooperate with us"
"Lock this area down"
"No one leaves until further notice"
Makar’s heart raced. This was not what he had expected.
"But... but, we need to..."
"Shut it," the other man cut him off.
"No questions, just follow orders"
Makar swallowed hard, confusion washing over him to and realization striking him to think why he was even getting frightened by these two guards who were left by the main party that went into the gate.
His thoughts were interrupted before he could form any more questions. Before he could say anything, a cold metal edge pressed against his throat, sending a wave of dread through his entire body.
Makar didn’t even realize when it had arrived. The knife pressed so suddenly against his throat, he didn’t know how it had gotten there. One moment, he was trying to process the situation, and the next, there it was cold, sharp, and deadly.
He was also a cultivator, one whose cultivation realm was the same as the two men in front of him and they weren’t above him in terms of cultivation stages. But the terrifying thing to him was that, he didn’t even see nor sense the movement. He hadn’t even noticed when one of them had closed the distance.
That thought alone sent a chill down his spine.
"If you keep hesitating," one of the men said, his voice cold and menacing.
"The next thing that’ll be going down is your head"
He could feel that if he really hesitated, the man would really do it.
He did as told and watched as the two figures began to move through the camp, and the guard captain a man who had once served under the city lord before Zoe took control attempted to resist.
The moment he raised his voice in defiance, the two figures reacted swiftly. In an instant, the guard captain was on the ground, incapacitated with barely any effort. It was like watching a wild animal being tamed with ease. The fight was over before it had even begun.
Makar’s eyes widened in disbelief. They didn’t look like soldiers but rather war trained veterans each stronger than an average person of its rank. He had underestimated Lord Rex’s camp before, but now it was painfully clear that he had no idea just how formidable they were.
A cold sweat ran down Makar’s back as he realized something. Rex Grimes. The name echoed in his mind like a thunderclap. Grimes, he was one of the Grimes, one of the duke families. Makar’s thoughts raced, and for a moment, he found himself drizzling with cold sweat.
"Do you need help with calming your people?" one of the men asked.
Makar forced himself to wave his hands.
"No... I’ll... I’ll make sure no one causes any more trouble"
"Good" the man said, his eyes narrowing.
"See to it that they stay in line"
The intensity of the situation had escalated in a way he hadn’t anticipated. He turned to his students and those still under his charge, his mind numb from everything that had just happened. His grip tightened around his clipboard as he gave instructions, trying to maintain control and look normal as possible.
As for the guard captain, he couldn’t’ help delighted seeing his face up against the floor. The two of them were at odds with each other but were forced to maintain a relation due to the existence of the city lord and now Baron Zoe.

Rex’s voice was sharp as he paid no attention to the tension in the air.
"So, in short, this was a type of gate, a shifting gate"
"It teleports to random locations, and the gate can only be reopened when you defeat the boss or survive for a week"
"Besides that fact, is it your fault for not managing your students properly"
"Or are you saying it’s entirely your student’s fault?"
