Chapter 83: Another One Again (Chapter-83)

As the group approached the massive structure at the centre of the arena, silence enveloped them. Rex, Zoe, and their personals all stood in a line, eyes fixed on the rippling rift core ahead. The air around it hummed with potent energy, crackling with a palpable force. The rift core itself seemed to pulse and breathe, as if aware of their presence, but neither Rex nor Zoe approached it.

Rex’s personals immediately took up positions around Zoe’s group, stopping them before they could get too close. Zoe’s personals, confused by the halt, exchanged uncertain glances. It wasn’t until the substitute captain of Rex’s group stepped forward, his voice steady and calm, that the mystery was explained.

"The rift core is not the only danger here," he said, his eyes scanning the area around them. "Every rift core has a guardian, a boss that protects it"

"And this one is no different."

The words barely left the captain’s mouth when the rift core’s pulsations became more erratic. A low hum grew louder, and the core itself rippled violently, its energy building. Suddenly, from the centre of the arena, a massive figure began to form, the ground beneath their feet trembling with each moment that passed.

Rex’s eyes narrowed as he observed the figure taking shape. His pulse quickened as a giant Hayenadon, its scales glistening like black obsidian, materialized before them. It stood towering, its eyes glowing with a menacing fire. The aura of strength it radiated was unmistakable. Rex could feel its power. It was at the peak of Rank 3, almost touching the threshold of Rank 4.

Zoe’s eyes widened in disbelief as the giant creature let out a roar that echoed throughout the entire gate, shaking the very walls of the arena. The sound was deafening, a guttural noise that rattled their bones.

"Another Hayenadon..."

His eyes twitched at the sight of another one

’Another one, really’

The captain quickly filled in the gaps.

"Be cautious, this Hayenadon is the peak of its grade, and bosses like these are usually surrounded by minions"

His gaze shifted to the surrounding arena. They waited for a while Zoe glanced around, confused.

"Why aren’t the minions showing up"

Everyone including Rex’s own group were clearly confused as to why there was no minions appearing,

"That’s the reason" Rex suddenly realized as he muttered under his breath, almost to himself, but it was enough to catch Zoe’s attention. She immediately turned to face him, her curiosity piqued. Tilted her head, giving him a playful, coquettish smile.

"Brother Rex can you tell me what you know"

Rex glanced at her, a brief flicker of amusement in his eyes, chuckled for a moment before answering her question.

"Do you remember when we fought the Hayenadon pack before with the Verdant Stags"

Zoe nodded, her expression growing more curious.

Rex continued,

"After the battle, the remaining Hayenadons attacked because of their vengeful nature and our personals killed them, right"

"The ones that were scattered inside the gate, the ones we killed those were the minions of this boss"

"All of them"

Zoe’s eyes widened as the pieces fell into place.

"So... the boss has no reinforcements now?" she asked, her tone a mix of realization and excitement.

Rex nodded, a smirk forming at the corners of his mouth.

"Exactly, despite the influx of Hayenadons in the gate, it was the trick against this boss"

"The moment we wiped out the others, we took away its advantage"

The giant Hayenadon let out another deafening roar, its frustration palpable. It turned in every direction, as if waiting for its army to emerge, but nothing came. It seemed confused, its reaction was as if he was saying,

"Ayo, where all my fam at?"

Rex raised an eyebrow at the scene. Without wasting another moment, Rex gave the order to attack, his voice sharp and commanding.

"All units, engage!"

The battle began with explosive force. Rex’s personals were swift and brutal, taking down the few remaining stragglers, a small amount of weak Hayenadons that had wandered into the arena. The Hayenadon boss itself was powerful, but it was overwhelmed. Its massive claws swung in wide arcs, but it was one against many and all of the attackers were very coordinated, still wary of the boss, leaving it no room to retaliate effectively.

The Hayenadon boss roared again, its frustration palpable, but it was now completely outmatched. This time, it was just a one-sided battle, and the Hayenadon didn’t stand a chance.

The Hayenadon roared in frustration, its body being battered and torn apart by the relentless onslaught. Rex watched the battle unfold, his face stoic, though a strange sense of pity almost rose within him.

’It never had a chance, did it?’ he thought briefly, feeling almost sorry for the creature as it was mercilessly pummeled by his personals.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Zoe. She was munching on something, her cheeks puffed out like a squirrel hoarding nuts, with the popcorn she had pulled from her storage ring. She was sitting comfortably looking completely unfazed by the destruction unfolding around them.

She looked so out of place in the midst of this chaotic battle, her gaze fixed on the Hayenadon as if she were watching a casual show.

Rex blinked in surprise, then couldn’t help but chuckle.

"You’re eating popcorn while this is going on?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Zoe paused mid-bite, noticing him looking at her. She tilted her head,

"What? Want some?" she offered, holding out the bag of popcorn.

Rex couldn’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all.

"You’re something else," he muttered under his breath.

But his next actions were betrayed what he was saying as he took a handful of popcorn from her bag, and they both began eating.

Before long, the Hayenadon let out a final, deafening roar as it collapsed, its body crumbling under the relentless assault. As the roar echoed through the arena, the creature’s form disintegrated, transforming into a shower of sparkling light. The particles swirled upwards, drawn back toward the rift core.

The rift core began to react once more. The energy around the core rippled, intensifying as the core spun faster, its power shifting. Slowly, it began to break down and materialize into smaller sources of light, each glowing with a faint, ethereal glow. Items ancient relics, technologies, and treasures materialized onto the ground in a steady flow, like a cascade of stars falling from the heavens.

Rex’s eyes scanned the items, and Zoe stepped beside him, her gaze flicking over the collection. There were plenty of Astralis Shards scattered about as well as other resources which included for cultivation as well as other professions.

Aside from them, there were also other items present. There were some technologies and artifacts from an era long past. Some of them for example the storage ring which was a commodity was one of them, they had been discovered before in other gates, their value diminished as their secrets had been uncovered. However, they still held worth, and could fetch a decent price on the market.

As the last of the items materialized, Rex looked at Zoe, who was already going through the pile. Rex didn’t find any items which interested him however the whole bunch was a haul nonetheless. She glanced at him and then pulled a few items to the side, holding them out to him.

"I’ll take this much," she said, her tone soft.

"I know you’ve been a big help, so you should have a larger share I’ll take 40%, you get 60%."

Rex raised an eyebrow, but he wasn’t surprised. Despite Rex’s personals being the one to carry out the majority of the fighting, Zoe had been the one to provide the critical information, guiding them to the core.

"Fine by me" Rex said with a small grin, pocketing the items he had claimed.

The arena was calm as the two of them divided the loot. However, that calm was short-lived. Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble.

At first, it was subtle, just a slight vibration that could be easily ignored, but then the tremors grew stronger, sending cracks spreading across the arena floor. The walls shuddered as if the very structure of the space was about to collapse.

Zoe’s eyes widened, her hand instinctively going to her weapon as the vibrations intensified.

"What now?" she asked, concern flickering in her voice as she looked around at the shaking surroundings.

Rex stood tall, his gaze calm as he watched the arena’s sudden instability.

"The gate," he said, his voice steady.

"It’s going to appear here"

"Once it does, we can leave"

A sudden burst of energy filled the air as the rift’s unstable presence manifested. The core shimmered, swirling with chaotic energy.

A glowing vortex began to form in the centre of the arena, its swirling light beginning to pull everything in its vicinity toward it. The ground cracked further as the massive portal expanded before them, its edges shimmering with power.

"So, this is our way out?"

Zoe asked wanting to confirm whether this was what he said.

"Yes"

With the gate fully opened and the portal swirling with light, the decision was clear.

"Alright, everyone, let’s go"
