Chapter 79: Fighting Against The Hayenadons (Chapter-79)

Rex tightened his grip on his spear, the weapon’s shaft warm beneath his fingers as black-golden flames roared to life around it.

He didn’t have imbuement arts for imbuing his spear. Imbuement Arts were skills which could enhance and amplify the user’s weapon with the mana and element of the user. As for his method, it was simply wrapping his weapon in his own element to strengthen its cutting edge and destructive power, not comparable to imbuement arts but it was only what he had.

Rex had read more books he had obtained from the gacha and knew that what body refiners train were martial arts and imbuement arts were a staple of it. Not to be mistaken with enhancement arts and main arts, imbuement arts could be called a branch from the main art as well as similar to the enhancement art. If the enhancement art helped users strengthen specific parts of their main arts, the imbuement arts strengthened the weapon of the user.

But with the extinction of body refiners due to past unbelieve acts which were done which Rex still couldn’t believe happened, most of the arts had been lost. If Rex had to think of it simply, cultivators were the equivalent of magicians in game-like classifications and body refiners were the hand to hand combat experts, berserkers. Without the berserkers, with magicians at long range, berserkers at long range, the game was not balanced.

It wasn’t that it was stated in the book but just based on his knowledge, he knew that most elemental arts excelled at ranged combat which could also be the reason which forced modern cultivators to create hybrid styles just to survive close-quarters fights.

Rex tightened his grip around his spear, the black-golden flames flickering violently around its length. The Verdant Stags behind him were holding their ground, but it was clear they wouldn’t last much longer. The Grade 2 Hayenadons were circling, their eyes turned a bit hesitant as Rex conjured his flames out of nowhere making them feel a trace of fear towards this new, strange fire that they could feel the heat from the distance.

Rex took a deep breath. He didn’t need to waste time. Raising his free hand, he channelled his mana, conjuring his elemental art.

"Flame Arrows"

A series of fiery projectiles materialized in the air, hovering above him each burning a bright golden-black, a colour unique to his flames. Flame arrows, a mid-tier Yellow Grade Arts, compared to its peers they were not known for their power but they made up for it in the number of projectiles.

However, these flame arrows were no just normal flame arrows, it was not the same flame. Afterall, unlike normal flames, his elemental flame was way stronger and it enhanced the strength of the arrows, not only that it also included some special effects which was different from the normal flame elements. It made it stronger with the same effort it would take to conjure the same art.

The Hayenadons reacted immediately, sensing danger.

They howled in unison and lunged from different angles, their fangs gleaming in the light of the flames.

Rex released the arrows.

The air crackled as the first wave of flaming projectiles shot forward, cutting through the air like meteors. Rex had to control them so that they hit all of the targets.

The first few arrows struck the lead Hayenadons directly in the chest. The moment they made contact, Rex’s flames burst apart with a dark sizzle, melting through fur and flesh with terrifying speed. The creatures howled in agony as golden-black fire spread across their bodies, consuming them in moments.

One of the beasts tried to roll on the ground, but it was not normal fire made by humans, it was an elemental art made with mana, Rex’s flames didn’t need oxygen to burn and it clung to its body, eating away at its flesh.

Another leapt at Rex from the side, jaws wide open.

Without hesitation, Rex flicked his wrist, and a second volley of Flame Arrows tore through the air, striking it mid-leap. The creature was blown back, its body ruptured by the sheer force before it even hit the ground.

The Verdant Stags, seeing the destruction, became emboldened, stomping their hooves and lowering their antlers to assist. However, Rex wasn’t done yet.

More Hayenadons were still coming, dozens of them.

Summoning even more arrows, Rex directed them in all directions, letting them rain down like a fiery storm. Unlike traditional Flame Arrows, which relied on raw elemental ****force, his had an unnatural piercing effect due to his , allowing them to break through the hardened hide of the creatures with ease.

One after another, the Grade 2 Hayenadons fell, their bodies either reduced to ash or left smouldering, unable to move. Their howls filled the air, echoing through the battlefield.

By the time Rex lowered his hand, the ground was littered with the charred corpses of the slain Hayenadons.

The battlefield was momentarily silent, until a deep, menacing growl came from the distance.

The Grade 3 Hayenadons had arrived. Looking at its kin which had been killed, anger was evident in their faces.

Their black fur streaked with eerie red patterns, their eyes gleaming with hunger. These were far stronger than the lesser ones. There was five of them.

Rex’s own cultivation was only Essence Absorption Realm 2nd stage, it was going to be hard but because of his body constitution and foundation as well as fighting experience, he could hold off against 2 of them.

The other three would be left to the Verdant Stags. The Verdant Stags were still useful as due to Rex killing off most of the grade 2 Hayenadons, most of them didn’t have their hands filled with protecting the weaker ones and could hold off the rest with their numbers. Well, at least holding them off. Rex didn’t think they would be able to kill the Grade 3 Hayenadons but it would be enough.

Rex inhaled deeply, centring himself as the two Grade 3 Hayenadons lunged at him, their movements blindingly fast. Their claws, reinforced with mana, tore through the ground like hot knives through butter. Rex sidestepped just in time, twisting his body as he lashed out with his spear.

’FLAMING ARC!’

He casted another elemental art. It was the same grade as his last one but this one carried much more strength.

A wide crescent of fire shot forth from his spear, carving through the air with searing intensity. Unlike normal flames, his black-golden fire left behind a lingering corrosive effect, melting through the armour-like fur of the beasts.

The first Hayenadon recoiled, snarling as its front leg burned with dark flames that refused to go out. The second one evaded the attack, rushing in from the side, forcing Rex to pivot rapidly.

Another Flaming Arc erupted, this time a downward slash that forced the beast to jump back.

But Rex wasn’t done. He controlled his arcs.

The moment the creature moved back, he willed the crescent to twist mid-air, bending its trajectory so that it slammed into the creature’s side. The attack left a deep burn along its ribs, and the flames immediately began eating away at its flesh and soul.

Yes, soul, this was the special effect of his dark golden flames. Combining the corrosive nature of his previous dark flames with the soul-damaging properties of golden flames.

The Hayenadon used it’s mana from it’s beast core to stop the corrosion but it wasn’t going out immediately.

The two Hayenadons circled him warily now, their initial aggression dampened by the knowledge that these flames couldn’t be extinguished easily. Even if they dodged, the flames stuck to their fur like cursed brands, weakening them bit by bit. Rex grinned.

If the fight dragged on, he would win.

One of the beasts, perhaps sensing this, let out a deep howl that vibrated through the air. A sudden pressure descended upon the battlefield an intimidation technique. Rex clenched his jaw, resisting the weight on his mind and he was able to resist it.

The second Hayenadon used the momentary distraction to lunge again. Rex swung his spear in response, coating its tip in even denser flames, and countered with a precise thrust. The weapon pierced through the beast’s shoulder, black-golden flames bursting forth from the wound like hungry leeches, digging into its flesh and soul simultaneously.

The Hayenadon let out a choked snarl, but Rex wasn’t done. Twisting the spear, he flung the creature backward and immediately fired another Flaming Arc, this one larger, a semicircle of raging fire that forced both beasts further away.

He took the chance to reposition, putting them in a more predictable path. Kiting them.

’Flaming Arc’

Another crescent of fire lashed out, forcing one of the beasts to sidestep. But the moment it moved, Rex manipulated the arc’s trajectory, twisting it back toward the creature’s exposed flank. A direct hit.

The beast howled in pain as its fur and flesh were eaten away by the corrosive flames.

Rex grinned. The damage was accumulating. His flames weren’t only about brute force but also attrition.

Even with their natural resilience, the Grade 3 Hayenadons couldn’t shake off the effects. Their movements became sluggish. Their snarls more frantic.
