Chapter 73: A Baroness’s Visit And An Unexpected Occurrence(Chapter -73)
As they were about to step away, Rex suddenly paused, as if something had just crossed his mind.
"Ah, I almost forgot"
"Ayana, the commission money.
He turned to Ayana with a small nod, signalling her to handle the matter. However, Tia’s grandmother simply shook her head, her expression unchanged.
"Lord Baron, Lady Ayana," she said, her kind voice was rather firm,
"As I said, there is no need"
"Consider it a small gesture of goodwill"
Ayana frowned slightly but didn’t insist further. Rex, watching the exchange, merely smiled. He knew that while they were rejecting the money, this wasn’t pure generosity it was a way to build a connection, a favour that they could call upon in the future. Still, he didn’t mind.
"Very well"
With that, he and Ayana turned and continued on their way, the two figures of the grandmother and granddaughter waving them off until they disappeared from view.

The next day,
Rex was in a VIP room in a restaurant. In front of him was a girl with red hair. Her hair was not short but not too long either only reaching her shoulders. It reminded Rex of autumn leaves in their peak season. She had a pretty yet cute face along with purple eyes but what was the main thing was the smile on her face which screamed of curiosity and mischief. Even though it wasn’t saying ha somehow, Rex could somehow feel it.
How was he here with this girl at this moment, he had to go back to the morning when he checked out the winery. He checked out the winery and already looked at the loyalty of the new recruits as well as how the product was doing. In two days time the product would be released which was a Grade/Rank 2 wine named Ruby Shade, a shade of ruby, red as blood.
Wine being able to be graded is because it could be used as a cultivation resource. It was also highly sought after. These wine were not only good for the body, it tasted good, well most of them did. There weren’t many cultivation wine as well in the market. The best of the wine being a Fourth Grade Wine, so a new wine being released was a great matter. For the marketing and others, he left it of course to Ayana and his mother, the source of it being his own city would make it so that trade opportunities would appear. Of course while it was on the rise, he had to clean off the city and open the trade routes as the starting goal.
Both of them in progress still. He just had to wait patiently. As for the red haired in front of him, she was a baroness. Her name was Zoe Pearce**.** The one who was said to visit this day said before by Ayana and she was exactly here at this moment before him but it seems that she was not a stranger.
"Say, are you Sarah’s brother?" she asked, tilting her head.
Before he could respond, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone. With a few quick taps, she produced a picture and angling up to hold it up beside his face from a distance. Her purple eyes darted between the image and him, her eyes sparkled as she saw that the person in the image was exactly the same as Rex as she put back her phone with a little bit of flush on her face. As for what the image she had looked at was something that Rex didn’t know.
"Ah-ha! You are! I knew it!" she exclaimed, a triumphant grin spreading across her face. Without warning, she scooted her chair from across the table to right beside him, closing the distance as if they were long lost siblings reunited after years apart.
"Brother Rex!" she chirped, her title for him changing in an instant.
Rex blinked, caught off guard by the sudden shift in her demeanour. He wasn’t entirely sure why she was acting so coquettish or why she had decided to sit so close, but he let it slide. Instead, he leaned back in his chair and asked her calmly.
"I assume there’s a reason why you came here?"
The Baroness pouted, puffing her cheeks in mock indignation.
"Boo, boring Brother Rex. Why do you want to jump straight to business?"
"Shouldn’t we enjoy a little fun first?" She lightly tugged at his sleeve, as if urging him to indulge her to something fun rather than this boring talk.
Rex merely smiled. "We can have fun later"
"First, let’s talk about why you’re here"
She let out an exaggerated sigh, crossing her arms.
"Humph! Fine, fine"
"You’re no fun, but it’s an important matter, so I suppose I’ll forgive you"
Then, as if flipping a switch, her expression grew serious.
"A gate has opened."
Rex’s expression turned more focused at her words.
"A gate? Where?"
"A bit more secluded, but it’s between our territories" she explained.
"Are you sure it’s a gate"
"Most likely, there has been an increase in monsters and my researchers have noticed a spatial disturbance in the area as well"
Gates. A force beyond human comprehension. They were anomalies that appeared seemingly at random. What lay beyond them varied, whether they were of this world or not of this world no one knew. Some say it connected to the continent of the beasts, some say its connected to something outside of this world.
In this world, there were two known continents: the Continent of Humans and the Continent of Beasts. At least, that was all that had been discovered so far. Between the two continents lay a vast ocean, one that served as both a bridge and a barrier. Naturally, this ocean was home to beasts as well as powerful creatures that roamed its depths. Beasts did not only possess the entirety of their own continent but also thrived within the ocean, their dominion.
A gate opening in a secluded area between human territories was not something that could be ignored. It was a temporary portal but the emergence of gates mean one thing if left unnoticed, the increase in monsters but it also meant something could be gotten
"How stable is it?" Rex asked.
"Stable enough that it hasn’t shown signs of disappearing yet," she replied.
"That’s why I wanted to inform you. It could be nothing, but... it could also be something big"
Rex nodded thoughtfully, his fingers tapping against the wooden table.
"I see, we need to investigate it"
"Have you sent anyone to scout the area?"
She shook her head. "Not yet. I figured it would be better to coordinate with you first"
"After all, if something dangerous comes through, I’d rather have a capable ally by my side"
Rex smirked at that.
"Flattery won’t get you out of owing me a favour later"
She gasped dramatically.
"Brother Rex, are you really the kind of man who’d make a lady owe him a favour? How cruel!"
"I am," he said without hesitation, earning another playful pout from her.
Despite the teasing, the weight of the situation was clear to both of them. Gates were unpredictable, and the last thing either of them needed was an unforeseen catastrophe unfolding between their territories, they had to explore it if they wanted to and destroy it before it caused something to descend from it. As for whether it could descend they had to measure the grade of the gate before that.
Rex set his empty wine glass down, the clink of glass against wood breaking the brief silence.
"Alright, we’ll investigate it together"
"I’ll gather my people"
Rex said and to his answer, Zoe also continued with a smile.
"When do you want to move out?"
"As soon as possible"
"Then, I’ll have my best men prepared by tomorrow."
"Then it’s settled"
It seemed that his visit to this city was getting longer than he had expected. Whether the gate would give him something useful, he would only know after he arrived at the place. It wasn’t his first time dealing with a gate so he wasn’t worried about it.
But this occurring made him realize something. It wasn’t that he hadn’t realized it before, it was that it wasn’t that big of a need at that time. The need of manpower, the need of an organization which would help him. His cities didn’t have any manpower at all, especially Zhanbert. This is not due to Rory, the city lord but rather before his rule, due to the peacefulness of this place, most of the strong personals stationed and under the rule of the city lords were taken by the other border cities with the permission of the Grimes.
Therefore his cities, despite being border cities didn’t have the firepower like others of its kind. What he had mostly were profession personals. He could hire mercenaries but they would only cost money and would not solve it in the long run. Rex could still manage with his small private group for now but he decided to let Ayana solve the matter of the creation of this organization and the matter of building an army.
"Speaking of which, she should have recovered by now"
Rex said as he stopped looking at the moon through his window to go find Ayana.
