Chapter 71: A Visit To An Peculiar Alchemist(Chapter-71)
The alchemy talent was the third level, one level below Alisia’s talent. While he was lost in thought about many things, Ayana had already gotten the phantom lotus that he requested. They made some more bids on a few things before leaving.
Inside the car,
"Master, what do you want to do now"
"Visit the winery"
"...Or should I focus on the matter of alchemy first?"
Rex had given a list of what resources he wanted to craft before but would he just grab alchemy resources without wanting an alchemist to turn them into pills?
Unless, he wanted to refine them himself which was only possible if he was an alchemist and Ayana had never seen nor heard her master talk about whether he could do alchemy but with so many surprised she had seen with him these days, she wanted to see whether he could give another surprise.
Rex leaned back in his seat, his mind running through the possibilities. If he were to refine the pills himself, it would take time time he might not have. While testing his new talent was tempting, it would take a while before he would be able to refine these pills and he was at the bottleneck at the moment.
"Which alchemists are available?"
"If Master doesn’t mind," Ayana replied,
"I could contact boss and she should be able to invite an alchemist from the Levantes"
"It is an Earth Rank peak alchemist who should be able to refine all of your pills successfully"
Levantes being a duke family had more than just one Earth Tier Alchemist but Rex knew that this one should be the most approachable one for them at the moment if Ayana were to say it.
"How long would it take to arrange a meeting?"
"Hmm, I can ask but it might take a while, there is something going on in the family which needs human resources at the moment"
Rex nodded before asking,
"What about within our city?"
"That would be Elder Tia" Ayana answered.
"She’s an early Earth Rank alchemist."
Rex raised an eyebrow.
"An Earth Rank alchemist?"
Rex was surprised. Becoming an Earth Rank Alchemist was not an easy thing to do. If it was an Yellow Rank peak alchemist, it would still be within his expectations. The gap between a Yellow Rank alchemist and an Earth Rank alchemist was massive.
Not that he knew it himself how difficult it was but rather, the sheer number of Yellow Rank alchemists compared to Earth Rank ones made it obvious. But then again, the difference between an early Earth Rank Alchemist and a peak Earth Rank alchemist was just as significant.
Still, it was impressive that there was even an Earth Rank alchemist within his city.
"Is she from the government force or an outside force?" Rex asked.
In this city, the forces could be mainly separated into two distinct forces, one which fell under the rule of the city lord and were technically his power and under his own authority, and outside forces, which belonged to independent powers such as the Five Families of Zhanbert.
"Rest assured, Master"
"She is under the government’s force"
Rex’s smirk returned.
"Good"
"Then let’s visit her"
Before long Rex and Ayana arrived at the residence of Elder Tia, a towering structure with sweeping, curved roofs layered in multiple tiers. The dark wooden beams contrasted with the elegant white walls, and delicate lanterns hung from the eaves, giving the place a presence which eased whoever looked at it. Despite its old fashioned architecture, subtle modern touches blended into the design, reinforcing its durability while preserving its charm of ancient time.
Stepping up to the entrance, Ayana knocked firmly on the wooden door. Moments later, it slid open, revealing an elderly woman with neatly tied white hair. Her eyes carried wisdom gained over the years, and though her expression was neutral at first, it softened upon seeing Rex.
Even though she did not recognize him, his striking features and the way he carried himself left a strong impression. However, the moment she turned her gaze to Ayana, realization dawned in her eyes.
"Oh? Lady..."
She blinked before straightening abruptly. A flicker of unease crossed her face as if she had just made a mistake.
"How rude of me! Lord, please enter!"
She quickly stepped aside, ushering them into the home with a respectful bow.
The interior was just as refined as the exterior spacious yet warm, with polished wooden floors. Paper lanterns cast a gentle glow, illuminating the space, while the subtle scent of medicinal herbs filled the air.
They were led into the living room, where comfortable cushions were arranged neatly around a low wooden table. As they settled onto the table, the elderly woman excused herself briefly.
Moments later, she returned, carrying a lacquered wooden tray. Upon it were two delicate cups of steaming tea, their earthy fragrance filling the room, along with a small plate of carefully arranged food light snacks that complemented the tea.
"Please, enjoy"
She said with a gentle smile, setting the tray before them. Despite her earlier nervousness, she now carried herself with the ease of a practiced hostess.
Rex picked up the cup, taking a slow sip. The tea was rich yet soothing, carrying a hint of floral notes. Ayana, meanwhile, delicately reached for a piece of the food. The elderly woman sat across from them, her eyes observing their expressions, noticing them enjoying her hand made food before speaking again.
"Lord Baron, and Lady Ayana," she began, her tone now more formal,
"I assume you are here for my granddaughter, Jia?"
Rex set down his cup, glancing at Ayana briefly before giving the woman a slight nod.
"Yes"
The elderly woman, whom Ayana addressed as Elder Tia’s grandmother, gave a warm nod before saying,
"She should be in the study now. I will go and get her."
Just as she was about to turn, Ayana spoke up.
"There’s no need, we’ll follow you."
Ayana said to the old woman as Rex seemed to be observing the details of the residence with interest. His gaze moved over the curved beams, the intricate carvings along the wooden pillars, and the carefully arranged lanterns that added a soft glow to the hallways. It was clear that he was intrigued by the architecture, and Ayana had noticed it.
"Very well" the old woman said with a knowing smile before leading them deeper into the house.
After passing through several hallways, they arrived before a big set of doors. The moment they stepped inside, they were met with the sight of towering bookshelves stretching up toward a high ceiling. The library was massive, its walls lined with thousands of books, scrolls, and jade slips, their presence giving off an air of deep knowledge and history.
A spiral staircase led up to multiple floors, each lined with even more books. Seeing this, Ayana turned to the old woman.
"No need to trouble yourself further"
"We’ll find her on our own."
The old woman chuckled knowing that Ayana intentionally told her so that she wouldn’t have to climb the stairs and so that Rex could also explore if he wanted to. The old woman didn’t mind them seeing the knowledge of the library and said.
"Very well"
"She was reading from the alchemical texts in second level eastern section just yesterday"
"You should be able to find her around there"
With that, she waited for them as they started to move towards the location where she said Jia would be at. As they made their way through the vast library, the soft rustling of pages and the faint scent of aged parchment filled the air. Following the direction the old woman had given them, they turned a corner and soon caught sight of a lone figure lying on the wooden floor amidst towering stacks of books.
Unlike the neatly arranged shelves, this corner of the library was chaotic, books were scattered in small piles, some opened and others stacked haphazardly around the girl as if forming a makeshift fortress. And in the centre of it all, a young woman lay on her stomach, propped up on her elbows, deeply engrossed in the book she held.
Yes, on the wooden floor. She wasn’t seated at a table, nor did she seem concerned about the books surrounding her. Instead, she read comfortably on the ground, her legs bent slightly at the knees as she idly swayed her feet in the air. Unlike her grandmother who looked more strict the girl seemed a bit not as restrained as her.
She was undeniably beautiful, though her beauty leaned more toward the adorable side. A pair of thin rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of her nose, giving her a scholarly yet delicate charm. Her long, silky black hair cascaded around her shoulders.
She wore an embroidered robe, it’s soft colours complementing her gentle appearance. Even as she read, there was a shy air about her the way she occasionally adjusted her glasses or how she hesitated slightly before flipping to the next page make her look like she wasn’t the type to be comfortable with talks, an introvert if people were to guess about her personality.
Completely unaware of their presence, she remained absorbed in her book, her lips moving slightly as if she were murmuring the words to herself.
