Chapter 69: A Visit From Before(Chaper-69)
Getting the meteorite iron was one thing but the challenger to it was another. The five families of Zhanbert aside from the city lord. Out of the five of them, he was most familiar with the Robertson. What was the relationship between him and them, it was enemies. Though Rex knew that they had not realized that he had already regarded them as such, his payback was coming very soon.
How did they became enemies would have to go back to the previous days.
Inside the stone walls of the prison, Rex’s boots echoed sharply on the cold floor as he walked through the darkened corridors. The clanging sounds of chains and the cacophony of prisoners yelling filled the air. Their calls echoed against the steel bars, their desperation seeping through the walls of their cells. Some banged on the bars with their fists, others cursed at passing guards, and a few even threw themselves against the walls, as if trying to break free from their imprisonment with sheer will.
"QUIET DOWN, OR YOU’LL ALL GET WHAT’S COMING TO YOU!"
The shout came from Callan, his voice booming through the narrow hallway. He was naturally behind Rex as he went through the hallways. He kept a sharp eye on the prisoners. His presence alone was enough to get the unruly inmates to simmer down, the threat from him worked very well. The reason for it was because of the small murderous aura that he leaked making the inmates know that he was not a person to be messed with and looking at the appearance and clothes of the two people, they understood that this was a person with power.
Rex didn’t pay much attention to the prison’s noise, his focus was elsewhere. He had a reason why he was here, and it wasn’t about listening to the endless shouting of criminals desperate for attention. He was here to see a particular person, one whom he had met before.
"Lord, the person is here"
Callan’s voice snapped Rex from his thoughts, his eyes trained on a quiet corner at the end of the corridor. The area was almost eerily silent compared to the chaos they’d passed through. Most of the cells in this section were either empty or contained prisoners too old or infirm to cause trouble.
The type of people housed here, criminals who had either outlived their usefulness or were awaiting the inevitable end of their lives. He turned his gaze down the row of cells, his expression hardening as he approached the farthest corner. There, in a dingy cell that seemed to have been left untouched by time, sat the man he had come to see.
The figure within the cell was slumped, leaning against the stone wall. This hair was a faded grey with patches of white here and there, his face weathered and lined with deep wrinkles, but Rex could tell at once that this man was no old beggar. The person seated there was none other than the spiked hair whom he had met before.
The man was Reed, the loan shark who had terrorized the lower districts and enriched himself by exploiting the weak and was exactly the person whom Cedric had turned to when he was in need. The spiked hair which he had before was now thin and brittle. His face was now wrinkled and aged. He looked nothing like the man who had made a gang and caused ruckus, a snake within the city, only targeting the weak, the once youthful man had turned into an old man in days.
His gang, known as the ’Iron Fangs’ had ruled the slums with an iron fist, and providing so called ’protection’ to anyone who could meet their demands with a cost.
What was the city lord doing, when there was such a gang present which was causing trouble. The problem was that the gang was operating on the turfs of one of the five families of the city and even if the city lord wanted to operate, there was no clue nor evidence to go towards it and it wasn’t worth offending one of these families for a small problem like this. Afterall the man didn’t go as far as to kill and worse.
The last time Rex dealt with him he used his fire on him but didn’t get to use his skills for getting the information from him. The second stage of the skill needed a touch and the third stage skill needed him to peer into the soul.
And he was going to use the third stage of the skill on him. Seeing the appearance of Rex, Reed’s face drained of colour. His body tensed, fear flickered in his eyes. He pressed his back against the cold stone wall of his cell, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. His face was full of terror. He had seen what Rex was capable of before. He had felt it, he experienced it. The burning agony of the dark golden fire that even felt like it burned the soul. And now, he had a gut feeling that this time, it would be far, far worse. Though it wasn’t guaranteed, he didn’t want to test it.
"D...Don’t come near me!"
Reed stammered, his hands shaking as he raised them in a weak attempt to ward Rex off. His voice, once filled with the arrogance of a gang leader, now wavered like a helpless child’s.
"I’m sorry! I swear, I didn’t mean to go against you!
"It wasn’t personal it was just business!"
"You know how this world works, right? You....You understand, don’t you?!"
Rex didn’t respond. His eyes gleamed with an eerie light, his expression devoid of pity or hesitation.
Reed tried to shrink further into the corner, but there was nowhere left to run. His back was against the wall, his body trembling like a leaf in the wind.
"Please...! Whatever you want, I’ll tell you!"
"Just don’t...don’t use that power on me again!"
His voice cracked, desperation thick in his tone. Rex took another step forward. The air around him grew heavy, suffocating.
Reed’s breath hitched. His eyes darted toward Callan, who stood outside the cell, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. There would be no help from him. No one would stop what was about to happen.
The moment Rex raised his hand, Reed let out a strangled cry.
"I’ll talk! I’ll talk!"
"Just just don’t touch me!"
Seeing him like this, Rex hesitated for a moment.
"Sure, tell me about everything"
"How did you get this gun"
"Why is it have a forbidden rune engraved on it"
Forbidden runed Xeon gun. Xeon guns were yellow tier weapons but their firepower was much more than that. Depending on the mastery of the maker of it, the weapon would have sub masteries, such as basic, adept, expert, etc. Depending on the grade, the firepower would differ. This was for every weapon. The weapon that Cedric made in the forge, was a basic level yellow rank weapon. As for the power of the weapon, it wouldn’t be able to be compared to yellow adept grade weapons. The ones which Rex used was also a basic level yellow weapon but it wasn’t able to handle his flames. As for the better crafted weapons within the yellow grade, he hadn’t gotten the chance to test it out yet.
Runes, they were enhancements which could be engraved on weapons and the like. There were many types of engravements depending on the type of the weapon but there were very little Rune Enchanters or rather called enchanters. It was not an easy job, a very rare job at that.
Even without engravements Xeon guns were a big name in the weapon category. Because of the fact that unlike the cold weapons of the same category, it could exert more power than it is supposed to. Despite only coming out a decade or so ago the weapon was debated for higher grades but it was only regarded as a yellow grade weapon due to its reasons.
The reason for it would be that despite it being a powerful weapon which could exert capabilities beyond the power of a yellow grade weapon, debated for being an earth grade weapon, it was only regarded as a yellow grade weapon why?
Because it was a goldigger. It was a resource hungry weapon that consumed more than it was supposed to. For a stack of bullets for it was more than what it took for just cold weapons and others. It was resource hungry and not possible for batches of it to be used.
Not only that there existed a rune for it far too dangerous. Both for its user and the target. It was a double edged sword. The name was never revealed and was hidden as a forbidden rune to never be discovered again, it was deleted from the texts of the kingdom. Many kingdoms in opposition wanted the knowledge of this rune. The rune was able to sap the vitality of the user and enhance the bullet to be far stronger than it was supposed to be, the power was beyond normal enhancements. For a person like Reed who had no cultivation to use it was a kill order he gave himself. Rex estimated that he would at most a decade or two to live with the amount of bullets he had shot.
"Ho...w do you know that?"
He didn’t expect that Rex knew about the forbidden rune.
