Chapter 56: Chapter-56

After his private group left after greeting him, Rex went to the room where Ayana was treated but before he could enter, the beauty opened the door from the inside.

Ayana stood, dressed in casual wear instead of the hospital gown she had been confined to during the time of the treatment. A neatly wrapped bandage covered her arm. Though surprised to see Rex at the entrance of her room, she smiled simply and said

"I’ve been discharged, master"

"Good"

"What about the old man"

Ayana asked about the old man whom they had tracked before.

"Cedric, he is in a coma"

"His injuries had been treated and is recovering"

"He should wake up in a day or two"

"Master would you still like to take a look around the city"

"Not today, let’s go back home first"

Walking out of the hospital , they went towards their car which had been driven back by Callan. Ayana moved naturally toward the driver’s seat, but just as she reached for the door handle, Rex’s hand shot out, stopping her.

"What’s wrong master"

"Let me drive"

"It’s fine master, this doesn’t hurt anymore"

Rex’s gaze was firm, leaving no room for argument. Seeing the resolute look in her master’s eyes, Ayana hesitated for a moment before obediently getting into the front seat. She leaned back against the seat as Rex started the engine, his fingers quickly navigating the GPS.

The route took them past the riverside, where the water reflected the red light of the sun borne from the sun going down at dusk, shimmering beneath the streetlamps. They passed rows of quiet shops, their signs started lighting up as the sun started to set, and small stalls rom where the scent of grilled meat and freshly baked bread briefly filled the car as they stopped at a red light.

During the time on the road, Rex thought of a few things. Though his barony looked good on the surface, there were many things that were going on. When he went through the industrial sector in the evening, though the place was filled with blacksmiths, alchemists and workers running around doing, their job, one thing he noted was the fact that the buildings looked a bit worn out especially for the blacksmiths. They should have been the profession with the best income as Drakenshire his border city should be rich in mineral resources but somehow they were not faring that well which peeked his interest. He looked at Ayana at his side and asked about it.

"About that, master"

"I also only have known about it recently"

"It seems that the city lords of Zhanbert and Drakenshire had a dispute a few years prior and the trades between the two cities were ruined a bit by them"

"But upon hearing master becoming a baron, in fear of master, they tried to establish a trade route back but they didn’t finish much" "Order them to visit me tomorrow"

"Also invite that Nerpolis’s lord"

Nerpolis was the seaside city under Rex’s barony. The reason for Rex’s visit to the industrial sector also served another purpose, that is to view at the people, their loyalty and talent.

He had already taken a look at the loyalty of the people at the wine sector during his brief visits. But he was going to visit it a bit later during this visit just to make sure. Afterall it was going to release very soon. He needed to protect this first pot of gold he was going to get.

The source of the wine which was the CrimsonVine Sapling was kept secret and only allowed for personals and even he whole wine sector that was responsible for the creation of this wine was done with personals lent to him by his mother.

As they neared home, Ayana glanced at Rex and asked casually,

"Master, are you hungry? It’s already time for dinner"

"I can make you something when we get back"

Rex nodded.

"What do you want to eat master" Though Ayana knew all of Rex’s favourites, she wanted to know if he wanted something specific in order to satiate his appetite. As they continued to converse, Ayana reached up and began unwinding the bandage from her arm. The fabric unravelled, revealing smooth, unblemished skin underneath no trace of the wound that had once been there.

"The healing pills and medicinal paste worked faster than expected" she said lightly, swinging her arm to show she was completely fine.

As they stepped through the grand gates of the mansion, a line of workers stood at attention, bowing respectfully as Rex and Ayana passed. The estate was vast, its towering walls and intricate architecture.

Rex and Ayana went into the inner chambers where no other servants were present. They wouldn’t come here unless they were summoned or had to clean. Ayana’s room was beside his own. Despite them being master and maid, their relationship was close. Isabella had adopted Ayana from a young age and she grew up alongside Rex as both his childhood friend and personal maid.

As they entered the heart of the mansion, Rex made his way to the dining hall, his usual seat awaiting him. The long table stood grand, fit for a banquet, yet only a few places were ever truly used. Ayana disappeared into the kitchen without a word.

The scent of cooked dishes soon filled the air. Though the mansion had chefs dedicated to preparing meals, Ayana went into the kitchen to cook it herself.

By the time she returned, a tray in her hands, she placed the food before him. Rex glanced at the meal before looking up at her.

"You didn’t have to cook yourself"

Ayana merely smiled as she sat across from him, serving herself as well.

"I wanted to cook for you master"

__ __ __

Rex was in a room where he himself and Ayana including three other individuals sat. It was already the next morning yet the city lords upon hearing his summon rushed here through the night.

City lords were to control the cities before and after the supervision of someone higher. Nobility especially higher ranks such as count, viscounts and dukes have many cities to manage and to manage each and every one of them is not possible and as a nobility why would they want to do it themselves and were the existence of city lords.

Rory, the city lord of Zhanbert the city Rex was presently in. He sat with his hands clasped neatly before him, his stature looked as if bowing slightly to Rex as if to show his respect and his white teeth were shining as Rex glanced at him for a second, the man showing his teeth and smiling as if a response to it.

He appeared to be a middle-aged man at first glance, his dark brown hair streaked with strands of silver yet Rex knew that the man was was well over a century old.

Austin, the city lord of Drakenshire, he looked to be an old man who was sitting upright. Unlike Rory, who still retained a semblance of youth, Austin looked every bit the seasoned veteran he was. They were like fire and ice. His face bore deep wrinkles and a few small scars as if telling that he was the city lord of a border city. His sharp, hawk-like eyes carried a weight that spoke of decades spent ruling over his city.

His hair, once likely a rich blonde, had long turned into a lighter colour, tied back into a loose knot at the nape of his neck. His beard, well groomed but not overly trimmed, added to his dignified appearance. His skin was rough but his posture remained firm his back straight, his hands folded in a composed manner. He bowed slightly as he sensed Rex’s gaze over him.

Finally Jasiah, the city lord of Nerpolis. He was a man whose presence was impossible to ignore not because of his commanding aura or sharp intellect unlike Austin, but due to his sheer size. His body wasthick and rounded, draped in layers of fine silk robes that barely concealed his excessive bulk. The fabric, embroidered with golden patterns, strained against his belly as he shifted in his seat, beads of sweat glistening on his wide forehead despite the cool morning air. In short, he was a fat man, very fat in that regard.

His face was round and plump, with sagging cheeks that jiggled slightly whenever he tried to remove the sweat from his face. His nose was broad and slightly upturned, and his lips, thick and oily, often curled into a smile as he saw Rex’s gaze over him. His small, beady eyes were nearly swallowed by the fat around them. Rex couldn’t help but tell Ayana to turn on he A/C because of him.

"Okay, let’s get down to business"

Rex looked at all three of them and the three of them looked down as if feeling the heavy atmosphere and pressure emitted from Rex. They now understood that despite looking young, Rex was not to be messed around. Even with Ayana they couldn’t do so but now seeing the baron that was her boss, they now knew that he wasn’t someone they couldn’t cheat around.
