Chapter 54: Chapter-54

The spiked hair yelled and yelled again but by now the old man cold no longer respond not because his life force had extinguished but because he had became unconscious. But upon hearing no response from him, he feared the worst.

’No, did he die’

’The punches were not that hard’

That is what he thought but it was only to young people. If it was for old men like them it would have a different impact.

’No, no, no’

The only light that was shining in the room turned off. The surrounding openings seemed liked they were blocked by a black shadow, no light was present inside this room except for a small light that was surrounding the spiked hair. He could see that there was a figure coming towards him from the dim light.

"Sir, I am sorry for offending you"

"How much did that old man offer you"

"I can offer you twice no thrice"

Seeing that the figure that was in the dim light was slowly moving towards him, the spiked hair became even more frightened.

"I can give you all of my belongings"

"What do you want, I can give you anything"

The figure came into light and it was a beautiful woman in office wear. The spiked hair upon seeing the beauty of the woman became stunned and almost forgot all of his fears.

"Miss, I am sorry if I offended you somehow"

"Can you spare me please"

Finally Ayana who was in front of the spiked hair spoke. Her eyes showed anger but not because of them beating the old man but because of something else.

"When you disturbed me and my master’s time, your end was already decided"

"No, no, no, I can’t die like this"

He roared frantically and pulled out something from his clothes and instantly used it. Upon seeing it, Ayana instantly moved quickly as to not get hurt. The weapon that the spiked hair took out was a gun but not just any gun a Xeon gun which was a gun which was stronger than a normal gun. A normal gun couldn’t hurt a cultivator if they are coated by mana but a Xeon gun could but what grade it was would depend how much damage it could deal to the cultivator depending on their realm but of course how much power it could exert also depended on the person who was using it.

But it was still a weapon of danger which Ayana needed to be careful of. She instantly shrouded herself in darkness and tried to disappear and the spiked hair man went crazy upon not seeing the figure of Ayana. With death looming over his head, he shot randomly with all the power he had. Ayana who was in the darkness could see clearly what was happening and only used slight movements to dodge whatever that came her way but then a shot went towards a direction which she didn’t think of. The shot was towards Cedric who was lying on the ground.

Before everything that had happened inside the building occurred,

Rex and Ayana was running from the top of one building to another talking while they were following Cedric.

"Master do you remember the time the last time we did things like this"

During the time they were in the academy they went for missions like these from time to time, tracking people.

"The last time"

Rex thought of the last time and his head went to the time when they had to track a noble. They were inside the house of the noble and only two of them were inside.

"Master, it’s risky going in here, are you sure"

"Yes"

The formation that the noble had set had a small weakness which they thought they could go through but only Rex and Ayana were quick enough to go through it before it got fixed. Now they were inside the house of the noble shrouded within the darkness of Ayana. Slowly bypassing the guards, they went to the room of the noble.

It was night time but the light of the dining room was still open. The two of them searched for the paperwork that could prove him of his corruption. Searched and searched till finally,

"Master, I found it"

But the sound of another person in front of the door caused them to panic.

"Huh, did I hear something in my room"

A drunk man spoke blinking blearily at the room.

"No, my lord, it’s just the wine"

He was also too intoxicated to care and the noble turned to the maid with a lecherous grin.

"You’re quite pretty, tell me your name."

She didn’t hear anything and even if she did she couldn’t pass up on this opportunity to become the concubine of a noble or at least get something out of it. She hesitated for only a moment before responding, her eyes gleaming with ambition.

Though the man was obese, he didn’t look too bad and was the reason for the maid to consider this.

"Would you like to know more about me in my quarters, my lord?"

A delighted chuckle rumbled from the man’s throat as he followed her into her room, closing the door behind him, unspeaking actions occurred.

Left inside the room of the noble was Rex and Ayana who was inside a cabinet. They both let out a synchronized breath of relief. Pressed closely together in the cramped space, Ayana could feel the warmth of Rex’s breath on her skin. Their hearts raced, not just from the danger but from how close they were to each other.

"That was too close"

"Let’s move"

They emerged from their hiding place and retraced their steps but within the dark night and the patrolling guards, they had to take many detours.

"That looks like an exit"

The two of them spoke quietly nearing the door to the room. Rex pushed open a door, only to realize too late that it led to a room filled with crates. The movement triggered an alarm, its piercing sound shattering the silence of the mansion. It didn’t matter what was inside the room but what mattered was their safety.

"Damn it! Wrong way!" Rex cursed, grabbing Ayana’s wrist as they bolted away.

Guards shouted from all directions as they converged on the intruders. They could no longer lose the guards with just sneaking inside the mansion, thinking quickly, Rex spotted a large window overlooking the estate grounds.

His eyes brightened as he went into a sprint as they crashed through the glass, shards scattering in the air as they tumbled onto the grass below. They landed on their feet coated with mana nothing happened to them, immediately started sprinting towards the city. The guards gave chase, their shouts filling the night air. But in the darkness, Rex and Ayana thrived. Ayana’s ability cloaked them in shadows, making them nearly invisible as they darted through alleyways, leaped over rooftops, and disappeared into the city like whispers in the wind.

The guards also followed them through the rooftops but Rex and Ayana hand in hand were like fish in water escaping through the night. As for the noble, he was sleeping quietly not knowing what had happened.

__ __ __

It wasn’t a mission given by the academy by any means. The academy was just a place for learning and becoming stronger by competing with other students. The kingdom wasn’t in a state of a big war and there wasn’t any reason to make students from the royal academy to take on missions like these. Afterall both students either from nobility and commoners that could attend the royal academy were ether nobility or geniuses.

They didn’t want the blame to be on them if they were to lose such forces. Afterall they were still under the rule of the kingdom, not a sole standing force. They couldn’t take the responsibility of the death of these children, especially the royalty. There would be from time to time expeditions they would go out which would allow the students to experience real battles but they would be under the protection of teachers who follow them. Missions like these were given by the Guild but Rex’s party took it not because of a guild quest but because of a personal request from a friend.

Ayana thinking back to those memories her thoughts lingered on that night especially at the time when they were inside the tight space of the cabinet. The warmth of Rex’s breath against her skin, and the way her heart had pounded. The memory made her lose focus for just a split second, and her foot landed awkwardly on the rooftop edge.

She didn’t worry because she could land just fine but before she could react, strong hands caught her wrist and pulled her back up with ease into his arms, his arm around her waist.

"Are you okay, did you get hurt"

His eyes scanned her for any sign of injury. Ayana blinked before a bright smile spread across her face.

"Thank you, Master"

Looking at her radiant smile, Rex felt that time seemed to be stop.
