Chapter 48: Chapter-48

Running through the road nearing through the forest, Rex looked at Clarissa who was running beside him. Images of the lewd dream he had flashed in his mind as he looked at her. But Rex wouldn’t go on the aggressive just because of those emotions and desires. He knew that Clarissa unlike Laura was quite conservative and was extremely shy of the things done in the relationship between men and woman. Till now what he could do were just normal kisses.

As they ran through the dense forest, the rhythm of their footsteps filled the air. The scent of damp leaves and pine surrounded them, the crisp morning air making every breath feel refreshing. Clarissa was used to these runs with Rex. But today felt different.

Rex had been glancing at her more than usual. She could sense it. He wasn’t the type to get distracted during a run, his focus was always sharp, determined but something about the way he kept stealing glances at her made her wonder if something was on his mind.

Before she could question it, he slowed down, pulling to a stop in a small clearing just off the main trail. Clarissa, slightly confused, followed suit, breathing a little harder from the run. She wiped a few stray strands of hair from her face and looked at him expectantly.

"What is it?" she asked, tilting her head.

Rex didn’t answer right away. Instead, he took a step toward her, his expression unreadable, yet there was something in his gaze, something that made her heartbeat quicken.

Clarissa frowned slightly. "Rex?"

Still, no response. He just reached out, his fingers brushing against her wrist before sliding up to gently cup her cheek. Her breath hitched.

Then, before she could react, he leaned in and pressed his lips against hers.

Clarissa froze, her eyes going wide in surprise.

’Oh..’

’That’s why he had stopped’

For a split second, her mind went blank. She had kissed him before, of course. But their kisses had always been quick, light, nothing too deep. This, however, was different. This wasn’t just a brief peck, his tongue was on the offensive probing the seam of her lips, seeking entry. She hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to react, but then her body seemed to take over. Her lips parted, allowing his tongue to slip inside, and she felt a rush of excitement as their tongues met.

The kiss was deep and intense, with Rex’s tongue exploring every inch of her mouth. Clarissa’s eyes fluttered closed as she let herself get lost in the sensation. She could feel his warm breath on her skin, his fingers gentle on her cheek, and his body close to hers. It was as if the entire world had melted away, leaving only the two of them, lost in this moment.

Her fingers twitched slightly at her sides, and for a moment, she thought about kissing him back, about leaning into it the way she’d seen people in books and movies do. But her body wasn’t cooperating. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to, it was just...

Too much.

Too fast.

Panic flared in her chest before she could stop it, and before she even fully registered what she was doing, her feet were already moving. She broke away.

Rex barely had time to react before she took a step back, her breath coming out in quick, uneven puffs. Her face felt like it was on fire, her heart hammering wildly in her chest. She could feel the way his eyes followed her but she couldn’t bring herself to meet his gaze.

"I..... I have to go!" she blurted out, her voice higher than she intended.

Then, without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and ran.

Rex left alone in the forest instead of returning back to the mansion, went deeper into the forest. This was a good time to test his powers.

He went to an opening among the trees where he could freely do as he pleased. Looking at the nearby tree, Rex felt like he could punch it down. A thick, towering thing that had probably stood for decades stood in front of him. Normally, breaking something like this would require a significant amount of force. But now...

Curling his fingers into a fist, Rex pulled back his arm, he punched forward.

CRACK

The sound was deafening.

The entire tree shattered at the point of impact, splintering apart like brittle wood. The upper half of the tree tipped backward, crashing into the ground with a thunderous boom*,* sending a cloud of dust into the air.

"...Huh."

That was way easier than he had expected. No mana reinforcement, no special technique, just his raw physical strength and he barely used any force. Flexing his fingers, he examined his hand. No bruising, no pain, not even a scratch. He was thinking whether the force of the impact was too strong for his nervous system to register anything but it seems that it was not, his new constitution and strength was jus that good.

’If it has this much force’

’Realm jumping and fighting will be much easier’

Even though his body refining was still in root awakening ninth stage, based on his experience, he could tell that the impact was as much as an essence absorption fifth stage. Of course there was also something else he wanted to test.

The forest was silent except for the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. Rex stood in the clearing, gripping his spear tightly. A wave of power surged through him, and with a single thought, dark gold flames erupted around the spear’s shaft, spiralling upward and coating the weapon in a holy glow. The air warped around the spear as the heat radiated from it.

The moment the spear cut through the air, a wave of dark gold fire shot forward, crashing into the ground and spreading out in all directions. The ground sizzled under the intense heat, and the trees near him quivered as if an invisible force had smashed into them.

He spun his spear once more, the flames following his movements as if alive. Then, without hesitation, he stabbed forward, releasing a concentrated burst of flame.

The fire shot out like a spear of its own, striking a thick tree ahead. The moment the flames touched the bark, the tree practically exploded, splintering outward as golden fire swallowed it whole. Charred pieces of wood rained down, the ground shaking slightly from the impact. With each movement, his experience with the flame grew. His combination with his spear skills and his flames skills were as good as before.

Raising his spear above his head, he gathered even more energy, letting the flames swell in size. The dark golden fire surged upward, growing larger, brighter.

FWOOSH

The moment he swung his spear downward, an enormous wave of fire exploded forward. It rolled across the ground, consuming everything in its path. The trees nearest to him caught fire immediately, their bark charring as flames danced along their trunks.

"...Oops. Too much."

The fire spread faster than he anticipated, licking at the trees and creeping toward the surrounding foliage. If he didn’t act fast, he’d end up burning down a huge chunk of the forest.

But he wasn’t worried.

Instead of panicking, he simply exhaled and focused his will.

With a sharp pull of his power, the flames stopped.

Then, in the next second,

Fwip

The golden fire retracted, pulling back as if being sucked into a void. The burning trees were instantly relieved of their torment, the flames vanishing from their bark as if they had never been there in the first place. The air was still hot, and the ground remained charred, but no further damage had been done.

Rex let out a low chuckle.

"My control is better than ever."

His control with this new dark gold flame was much better than his old flame by miles due to no force blocking his control. He missed the flame somewhat. It was the flame that grew with him and which he used to make his name on the front lines, it was something he had used since he was able to. But now looking at the new flames he sighed but knew that it was for the better.

Retracting the dark golden flames from his spear, Rex turned his gaze toward the weapon in his hands. The once pristine shaft now bore the marks of his newfound power. The previously smooth, metal was charred in places, blackened streaks running along its length where the flames had clung too fiercely. Faint dark golden veins shimmered beneath the surface, as if remnants of the fire still lingered within.

The spearhead itself had changed subtly. The razor sharp edge remained intact, but the metal had darkened, taking on a deeper hue, as though tempered by the sheer intensity of his fire. It no longer gleamed under the light but instead absorbed it, giving off an ominous glow. Small cracks ran along parts of the blade, not enough to weaken it, but enough to show that the weapon itself was struggling to withstand his flames.

Rex traced his fingers along the shaft, feeling the residual warmth still embedded in the metal. He sighed.

"This thing might not last much longer at this rate..."
